Model M: Space & Ctrl Key Issues
« on: Thu, 04 November 2021, 14:02:57 »
I've had this Model M for about 2 years, made on 4/30/1993. I love to use it, but recently it's had some issues with a few keys. Whenever I press the space bar, sometimes it will enter two or more spaces, even if I've only pressed it once. This makes it really annoying to type on, and is also annoying for games, especially with bhopping.

Another issue is with the Left Ctrl key (Right Ctrl works perfectly fine), whenever I hold it down it will sometimes take a short amount of time before actually pressing the key, and then while holding it down it will sometimes just stop acting as if I were, and then continue. This is less annoying, but still has led me to use the Alt key while in games when I would normally be using Ctrl.

Anyone know why this might be happening? When I first got the keyboard a few years ago it worked fine, so it's something that happened since then.

My guess would be the membrane being dirty or damaged, since this isn't something that really happens with capacitive buckling spring (outside of incorrect threshold settings with an xwhatsit controller). Have you tried removing the caps and spraying some compressed air down the barrel?

Unicomp sells replacement membranes, if needed, but then you need to pop all of the plastic rivets and bolt mod it.

I'm no expert on membrane buckling spring either though. One may be by shortly.
