PCB Mounted Cherry Browns
« on: Fri, 10 September 2010, 12:23:32 »
What 'boards out there have cherry browns that are PCB mounted?

Obviously the cherry made 'boards, but mainly I'm looking for a source of new cherry browns with a standard(or close to standard) layout.

Now that datacal is out of stock, I don't know where else I would get a new one  since all the filcos are plate mounted...

Is the Das Keyboard Silent PCB or plate mounted?  It has no resonating or pinging sound, just flat tap-tap-taps.

As far as I know, Cherry is the only manufacturer of PCB-mounted-switch 'boards.  If Datacal is out, you will probably have to find something on eBay or import one from Asia.

Yeah, I thought that might be the case...

...*shiver*....importing....scary things can happen....

I like plate mounted better.

Keyboards are better solidly built.  Manly.

I agree, I love the build quality of Costar 'boards, but I need the quietness of PCB cherry browns.  And I don't want to have to buy two topre 'boards (I hate typing on a different 'board at work than at home, it messes up my finger muscles and typing speed)

Get a HHKB.  That way, you can just take it with you.  I pack mine in my laptop bag.

I thought about that, but I need my arrow keys.  I like the layout for the HHKB, but it just doesn't work out for me practically.  I used some Lites for quite a while, and loved it, but again, it ended up just being too much trouble.

Wow, the DataCal ones are out.  The Chinese Lettered Blue Cherry Special is no more.  That means there ARE no Cherry Corp G80-3000 keyboards available new in the USA.

Damn US Cherry Corp Sales Manager!!!

That's the problem I came across...

Oh cherry, why don't you sell standard keyboards in the US?

I'd say just get one of the compaq MX11800, or cherry POS with browns off ebay.  Do the Kinesis cherry browns count as plate mounted?  They're curved seperate pcbs, from what I saw.

If plate mounted is the only alternative, you could get a set of doubleshots and do the dental band mod.

Have you already tried out plate mounted browns at work and been told they're too loud?

Seriously, I think it disturbs my coworkers more, when I type super quiet (silent to them) on a silicone board.
Word is Elitekeyboards has double shot keysets on the horizon.

Yeah, I used to have my DAS at work, and they were OK with that, but we're in a small room and it sometimes disrupts them when they're on a call or something.

Luckily they're not *****y about it, which is great, but I just want to keep the noise to a minimum.  I will probably end up just getting a Filco, but for now I have a used g80-8113.

I'm just going to replace it in the near future as the keys are pretty worn and kind of uneven.
