My Filco Majestouch is acting weird.
« on: Sat, 11 September 2010, 18:52:52 »
Hey guys, I spent some time searching the forum but couldn't find anything.

My Filco majestouch was acting weird today.  The model is FKBN104M/EB.  I've had the keyboard just about over a year and never had problems with it.  I've had it connected to my computer via PS/2.  Today, I wasn't able to log in to my computer after I turned it on.  The keyboard was unresponsive (the mouse works).  I restarted the computer, then I noticed I was able to log in, but the keys were sometimes unresponsive/laggy, the num lock light would not turn on/off when I pressed the button etc.  I switched it over to the usb and the windows driver wasnt able to install properly I kept at it and I noticed it was still doing the same problem.  I began messing around with it, and opened the keyboard, visually everything looks fine.  I ran eset no viruses, did a chkdsk no viruses, no errors.

I then used another PS/2 keyboard and it works fine, so I have isolated the problem to the filco keyboard.  I contacted elitekeyboards, waiting for a response, but I'm over the warranty.

Strangely, the filco keyboard works fine now.  Has anyone ever had an issue like this?  Is it the chip in the keyboard that's faulty?

Thanks.

Sorry to hear that you are experiencing some problems with your keyboard. I don't connect mine through the PS/2 adapter, so I cannot be of much help here. One suggestions that I have would be to try the keyboard using the USB port for a while to see if it's not the adapter which is the problem.

I had a similar issue but the other way around. I was connecting a PS/2 keyboard to a USB port using an adapter. It worked fine the first time. Then I stopped using the keyboard for a while. When I tried again, the keyboard would not work. When I replaced the adater, the keyboard worked fine again.

Have you tried replicating the problem on a different machine?

This has happened to me only a handful of times over several years. Always at bootup. It usually goes away after a couple of reboots (as a programmer I can't believe I'm saying this lol). I suspect it has something to do with a Windows USB drivers crashing. On one occasion I let the computer sit for 15 minutes and it became responsive again.

Good luck.

The problem doesn't occur at all now.  It doesn't occur on the desktop that iv'e had it on for over a year nor on my laptop.  It was very strange...

It could be a power issue. Some keyboards are a bit fickle when the computer starts up. You just gotta start it up a few times and the keyboard'll work fine.

As a Windows programmer I know that rebooting resolves a LOT of issues ;) :D
