I think they are testing the waters to see if a trackball would be successful, if it is then they would add the hyperscroll. Anyway with a slick track ball, hyperscroll is unnecessary, I just wish they made a left handed one, as i use a mouse in the righthand and a trackball on the left of the keyboard.

Still waiting for a trackball designed for people with four fingers and a thumb on their hand. I prefer the trackball under the index finger, but would be willing to use a thumb ball if everything fitted like a glove.

Might be a good choice for a HTPC, where wireless is required.

Off-topic, but I have noticed a couple people saying that they do this.  What is the advantage of keeping a trackball to the left of your keyboard in addition to having a mouse?  Is it easier to reach, so for short-duration pointer movements it is faster than switching to mouse?

You can make very precise movements with some trackballs while mice are easier to use. Or they do it because it relieves RSI.

NEEDS MOAR BUTTONS! It looks like a regular 5-button HID device that won't need special drivers. But I want a trackball like the G700, which I've been using for a few weeks. It's not as "clicky" as the G500, but it's more comfortable, and has a very unique and surprisingly usable thumb button layout.

The M570 looks equivalent to the M500 in features, so maybe there's an M770 in the works...

Hyperscroll would still be nice. A disc has a lower moment of inertia than a sphere of the same diameter. This means it's easier to start and stop free-rolling motion.

Still, I'd settle for Scrollpoint.

Or a scroll trackball, like the portable Slimbaldes. Dual trackball

Optical or touch scrolling has the no-moving part advantage and they can do hyperscroll in the software, like the MX Air or I believe the new Microsoft mice.

I have 2 of those, and they would make a good starting point. (If only the resolution was higher, I'd be using them now.) The resting position of the hand is near perfect on those.

But what I mean is you should be able to rest your hand on the device comfortably, with all muscles relaxed, and there should be a control under every digit, waiting to be operated effortlessly.

Bonus points for extra buttons, wheels or whatever that you can stretch to. But the basis should be a full set of controls that you DON'T have to stretch for.

I'll have to make my own at some point, starting by resting my hand on some of that mouldable plastic you can buy.

I gave up waiting for this:

Kensington and Logitech generally don't publish their Trackball DPI specs, the lazy bastards.

Neither do they mention the other technical specifications of the sensor. Like the frames/second, tracking speed etc.etc.

Sure doesn't help much unless you know the terms and meaning. But sure makes you wonder just how ancient the engines those trackballs are using.

I think it's 400dpi or lower. I should work it out but I know it's not quite usable with my dual screens.
EDIT> Found a link saying it's 300dpi.

I currently have a Logitech Trackman Marble trackball, and Logitech G9 mouse on my desk.

The M570 now sports an adjustable laser sensor, giving you a wider range of cursor speeds—and the perfect amount of control.

Sounds promising. I might actually desert my MX1100 again for a trackball if it turns out to have ≥ 1600 dpi.  Too bad all the reviews I googled are useless in that respect. What's so hard about rotating the ball an Inch and counting the pixels the pointer moved?

That's what happens when you don't advance trackballs, no one bothers to use them. And are kept underground and or industrialized, so people consider them either fugly or are so oblivious of any better ones like the CST that they dump trackballs or are like WTF is a trackball.

My best guess is either the Avago 9500 or Darkfield. But DPI wise it's anyone's guess really anywhere between 1500-5700, depending on the engine. Hopefully they make a marble version with a much better engine, always found the marble shape a bit more interesting.

I picked up a couple m570s on the weekend (on sale for $45 CAD) so I've had a few days with it now.  I had to go back to the store and exchange one because it had a squeaky scroll wheel.  When I scrolled up very quickly, it would start to squeak.  It sounded like the rubber of the scroll wheel was rubbing against some plastic on the inside.  Thankfully the newly exchanged one is doesn't squeak.

I'm upgrading from the older wired Trackman Wheel (TMW) so it's not a huge difference, more of an incremental upgrade, like a v1.1 of the wireless TMW.  The new forward/back buttons are a nice addition.  It has roughly double the dpi of the TMW.  The scroll wheel tick is more muted and less tactile/distinct than the TMW, kind of like the difference between a Cherry brown and blue switch.  I like the older more tactile click.  I also prefer Cherry blues over browns.  The shape is also a little different than the TMW.  The arch of the hump (tallest point) is a bit steeper than the old one.  Very subtle, but I've been using the TMW for a few years now and noticed it immediately after placing my hand on it.  It's not bad, it just feels a bit different.  One thing I really wish they did was using the hyperscroll wheel from the MX/VX Revolution/G500.  The rubber scroll wheel feels so outdated.  I don't really use the hyperscroll functions of my other mice, I just like the feel & click of the wheel.  All in all, not bad for $45 but the $70 MSRP is a bit of stretch.

Hm, double would mean 800 dpi, I guess.  Is this already with the
resolution switched to maximum?  I gather from the Logitech ads that it
has some form of resolution adjustment.

It doesn't seem to be accessible out of the box via buttons like on the
MX1100 though.  I'm afraid some reverse engineering is going to be
required to change it on, er, not officially supported operating
systems.

I don't know what the dpi of the old TMW was because it was never specified and I could find no documentation on it, but the m570 is roughly double.  I have them both plugged in simultaneously and the same amount of ball rotation moved the cursor twice as far on the m570.  I finally installed SetPoint 6.20 and there's no dpi adjustment like there is on my G500 mouse so I just un-installed it.  The default fwd/back button setting is fine for me.  The only way to change movement/pointer speed is via the Pointer Speed section in Mouse properties in Control Panel.  I have mine set at 2 notches down from Fast and unchecked Enhance Pointer Precision.

I only run Windows XP/7 so I can't comment on other OS compatibility.  The box only lists Windows and OSX 10.5+, there's no mention of Linux.

No kidding.  I'd rather have the hyperscroll wheel then the wireless.  Once I position the trackball where I want it, it doesn't move.  I've always wondered why they made a wireless trackball in the first place.  Aesthetics?  And I spoke too soon about the lack of squeak on the replacement m570.  It squeaks when scrolling up AND down now (scrolling up still squeaks louder).  Grrr....  I've got another old TMW with a flakey left-click that I can scavenge the wheel from.  If this squeak gets any louder I may open it up and see if I can replace it with the wheel from my old TMW.  Hmmm.... I've got an old VX Revolution that gets no use nowadays, maybe I should see if I can scavenge the hyperscroll wheel out of that.  It was cheaper than the m570 that I use daily now.

Anyone use a trackball like this one to play games? I usually did this on the past when Diablo II was released and this was not really a problem. I can remember too that I played some shooter games like Half Life but today I'm not really sure about how will be that since we have so high resolutions.

I'm used to very low sensitivity with my mouse always at 400 dpi but I have to move it across all the mousepad that is 43.5x36.5cm when paying shooter games so I'm not actually sure if it will be a nice choice for gaming.

I think I will ask my cousin to search for one of that old Logitech trackball we used to have when paying together in the past just for give  it a try with my actual resolution.

I used one for a short while the trackman thumb. It's definitely not a gaming device having to raise my sensitivity a lot and it had a very glitchy jittery movement to it. I guess it could have been the black dots on the red ball and or the DPI. Definitely the DPI was a major one especially with the higher resolutions not just desktop but gaming as well.

Good idea, I'd say try before buying though many have mentioned like keyboards you gotta spend good money for good trackball. Just remember there is a difference between thumb and finger you might hate the thumb ball and prefer the finger one or vice versa even for gaming it might be a different thing as well. Sorta like using a different mouse for a different grip, you might not like the mouse you use because it doesn't fit your style.

Speaking of buying, does anyone recommend the marble to buy for those that use it(gaming, desktop etc.etc.)?

For some reason the marble seems to have disappeared when I tried to buy it but recently I noticed the dark grey marble appearing here and there. I gave the trackman away and the kensington orbit I returned because it didn't feel right and I know some might come out and say if your gonna buy a trackball get the kensington expert or the CST-X.

But considering some praise the marble quite a lot is it worth it? or is it gonna end up another waste?

(kinda worried if logitech is working on a upgraded marble and kick myself for not waiting)

I guess if it doesn't work out next time I do go for a trackball I really need to just take the plunge and spend good money on a good one. Or give up altogether on the whole trackball and gaming.

Are you referring to the Trackman Marble with 4 buttons?  If you are then I'd say it's another one of those YMMV things.  I actually started off with the older 2-button Trackman Marble as my first trackball.  My friend had bought the Trackman Marble FX at the time and while it was comfortable, I wanted something a bit different and got the TM Marble.  After using it for about half a year maybe, I still didn't really warm up to it.  The lack of the 3rd or 4th button really bothered me.  The Marble FX had 3 so you could map one of the buttons as a Shift/Hold and spin the ball to scroll up and down.  The Marble did not have this.  The best you could do was install the logitech software and set simultaneous left & right-click as the Hold button.  Not very intuitive and made scrolling a chore.

Then I chanced upon a guy a work with the Microsft Trackball Optical (MS' version of the TM Wheel) and asked to try it out.  I thought, this is kinda cool, way better than the Marble I was using and it has a scroll wheel too, bonus.  But the ball didn't spin very freely because it was kind of stiff.  Maybe he just had crud on the inner rollers or something.  Then I saw another guy with the Trackman Wheel and asked to try that out and instantly fell in love and bought one within a few days.  I was on my 2nd one before I bought and switched to the m570.

Anyway, back to your first question.  The resolution was about the same on the TM Marble as the TM Wheel, both of which I found have too low of a dpi.  I had to switch back to a higher dpi mouse for FPS gaming.  It's definitely a YMMV thing as something I don't like you may like and vice versa.  You'll have to buy one to try it out for a couple of weeks to see if you really like it or not.  If you're in the U.S., they are readily available for cheap.  Both Amazon and NewEgg have it for $25 USD + s/h so it's a relatively cheap thing to try out versus mechanical keyboards for instance.  The main thing you'll have to get used to is using your forefinger and middle finger to do the spinning instead of your thumb.  And if you've tried the Kensington Orbit then you already know what that feels like.

Yup, used it but it's performance was horrible even on the desktop very evident skipping and sensor spazzing out even from slightly quick movements which are not all that quick.

Someone mentioned it was the ball since they changed it to the grey one and also the engine itself considering it's quite a old sensor.

Like I said was always interested in the marble(forefinger) but for some reason it wasn't being sold. But at the same time I don't want to waste my time and money buying and finding out it's not for me.

I have yet to find an optical trackball that is good for FPS gaming, unless you use a fairly high sensitivity. All of the current optical trackballs on the market use several-generations-old sensors that are inadequate for anything other than casual desktop use or for FPS gamers who don't mind if they suddenly find themselves firing rockets into their feet after an attempted quick 180.

Actually, the current generation (dark grey) Logitech Trackman Marble is *decent* (better than the old white one), as is the Kensington Expert Mouse, but if you like low sensitivity, they'll probably drive you nuts with their failure to track fast movements.

I don't know about the M570, but I would be surprised if Logitech actually saw fit to put a decent sensor in it. Miserable rat bastards (Yeah, I'm bitter).

Actually the black dots on red are pretty much the optimal surface for optical sensors to use (when they're lit by a red LED). Other companies (Kensington) have made stupid decisions that favor aesthetics over functionality, like the first generation optical Expert Mouse, which had a very dark grey sparkly ball, which mistracked horribly even in normal desktop usage. Later, they started using a lighter grey ball, which drastically improved tracking (but it's still limited by its ancient sensor).

Yeah, one more note about that red ball with black dots from the Trackman Wheel, it sort of works in the m570... at about 1/2 the dpi.  The sparkly blue ball from the m570 does not work in the Trackman Wheel even though it fits.

I've been trackball-curious for a while now but wasn't overly interested in the Kensington options.  Staples had the M570 on for $45 this week so I just picked one up tonight.

First impressions?  Pretty happy.  Performs well even at 2560x1600.  My scroll wheel isn't squeaking, but it's pretty loud and stiff compared to the Razer I use to game with.

IMO, it would be perfect with an extra button under the ring finger and a hyper scroll.

ok this isn't some good news but my M570 developed some lag/stuttering/whatever you want to call it. It happens on and off and it's probably due to the wireless. It just started happening about 3 days after the return period so now i'm a little bit screwed. Its hard to predict when it happens but another turn off for wireless for me! :(

You should try a CST.  Link in my sig.

Laser tracks Clear Acrylic balls fine and new model has even higher DPI.  I need to do some Ebay searching for some DragonBallZ.

I've already got one, you see. I'tsa verr nice. But it's got one fatal flaw (for me).

It's got built-in acceleration, which can't be turned off. I just heard back from the CST sales/support guy Robert Rolling (best name ever for somebody in the trackball business, unless there's somebody out there named Holden McBalls), who said that, yes, it is inherent in the laser sensor and the way it reads the solid-colored ball they use. He said they're looking into different methods to alleviate this, though most people don't have a problem with it. I have a problem with it, because acceleration is clearly the work of the Devil.

If you don't mind the acceleration (and therefore are in league with the Prince of Darkness), it's pretty much the only full-sized hi-res trackball on the market.

Decent enough to be worth it?

For me, no. It's a good trackball, and relatively cheap, but at the low sensitivity I prefer, it can't handle a quick spin. But I am very, very picky about this stuff, and I know other people who think it's fine for FPSes.

Yeah, one more note about that red ball with black dots from the Trackman Wheel, it sort of works in the m570... at about 1/2 the dpi.  The sparkly blue ball from the m570 does not work in the Trackman Wheel even though it fits.

That's interesting. I guess the m570 ball is patterned/colored in a way that compliments the tracking laser. I'd be interested to check one out, but I don't like thumb trackballs. There's a reason why when someone is clumsy, he is said to be "all thumbs".

Oh, yeah, wireless pointing devices are also the work of the Devil.

It stopped working because a light sprinkling of holy water does nothing but piss off the demons.  You need full submersion for several days to cleanse it.

Holy water is a good start, but I usually finish these things up by shouting "THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU!" repeatedly, until the neighbors call the cops and the judge orders me back on my medications.

i wanted to try greasing the scroll wheel, but i couldn't figure out how to open this thing up.  There is 1 screw visible, and 3 underneath the rubber feet.  after taking these off i couldnt figure out how to pry the dang thing open...oh well, i'll see if i can put up with the squeak for now

Mine is ever so slightly squeaky, and I'd like to look at the switch under the scroll wheel as it's quite stiff.  Once the return period expires, I'll look into opening it.

Generally, they are held together by both screws and plastic clips along the edges.  The problem is that there is very little space between the two halves to get a wedge between them without damaging it.

¿You mean Squeaky like the M570 on this video?

I'm actually thinking on receiving one of this Trackballs from a gift my aunt wants to make me. I can take it for 63€ and that sounds pretty good price, but well here in Spain the change is 1 USD = 1 Euro when this is not the right change rate ¬¬'

I'm tired of moving my hand all over the mousepad when making some kind of thing on the computer when I'm not gaming so I want a very comfortable peripheral and well who knows maybe I can use this M570 for gaming some RTS/RPG games too and because of being wireless I can't move it out of my mousepad and just get the Kinzu for fps games, sounds cool.

I found another possible screw hole location, under the battery just below the "1.5v" label on the curved part.  I don't feeling like voiding my warranty just yet, but I think that might be the last screw location.

Yes, that's exactly what mine sounds like, except mine will squeak while scrolling up AND down.  It does not constantly squeak like that, just intermittently, but it is annoying.

Good to know!  Consider this a second confirmation on the squeakiness.  Mine isn't as frequent as the video (mostly occurs when scrolling quickly) and I can tolerate it as I often have head phones on...

Once those thirty days have passed I'll pop it open though.
