Ethernet port stopped working?
« on: Sun, 28 August 2022, 09:24:11 »
So suddenly my ethernet stopped working, and PC only works in wifi.

I tried different cables, two different, none of them works or produces lights.

The switch/router does have a wifi extender enabled via DSL, that is correctly connected.

ONE of the cables I tested for my PC, I tested on my laptop and sucecsfully got ethernet connection. The other cable however did not.

Is my ethernet port dead?

Does it show up in device manager (Windows) or lspci (Linux)?  It's unlikely you physically broke the port without knowing about it but if the chip died it would disappear.

i do partially agree with SO, but you can still have it show up and damaged, you can have done damage to the contacts in the connector in your pc (i do not know how you would do that, but i bought 2 switches with physically damaged port contacts, one still works with less than 100Mb/s the other no at all)
there is also the dual chips ethernet implementations, where you have the logic high level chip talking to the pc (and showing in the OS) and the physical interface chip, if the 2nd dies it will still show up but be dead and not work at all, both my old hp laptop boards have a nic pretty close to the cpu and a phy next to the ethernet port.

I can confirm the router works fine with multiple laptops and other ports and ethernet cables.

Can I just get a ethernet to USBC adapter at 2.5gbit/s and solve it like that?

if it sounds like an acceptable solution to you, for sure, but isn't the realtek usb GbE already one? you have two ethernet nics connected atm if windows is to be trusted.

I can try and look...

I was told the PCI network adapter with ethernet is the strongest

From what I can see I only have 1 port

I face a similar issue and after reading the thread, I realized tat mine was physically broken. Thank you so much for providing that direction.
