Topre Keychain world trip....
« on: Tue, 28 September 2010, 12:10:30 »
This item is waiting to take a big trip around the world.

This is your chance for all you non-topre owners to try out the famous Topre switch. This Topre keyswitch is very small and very light and hence the shipping charges will be minimal.

If you are interested in receiving it, trying it out and then sending it on again on its trip please PM me. I will maintain a so called sinklist with the participants at http://www.mrinterface.com. I will wait for 1 week to collect participants then I will send it out.

Kind Regards.

666 : the number of the numerologist... :-)

This item is non-recycled. It is a genuine Topre Keychain. Only the keycap is swapped for a realforce Escape key.

I got it from someone believing in the concept.( That is : Open Sink -> to spread hardware over the world in order for the participants to form an opinion ) Open Sink is loosely based on GeoCaching.....

I've heard that when you press this it plays the song "Hard Work" and summons Ron "Typewriter" Mingo.

Wicked.  That's great that you're doing that.  It would have been really great to be able to get a feel for Topre, before ownership.

I wish Topre just sold the keychain, rather than rare Japanese give aways.  I'd like to feel the oneness with cup rubber anytime, anywhere and my whole keyboard is too big for that, even if it is the smallest keyboard I own.  Well, the silicone keyboard is smaller volume wise.

And it's away  to destinies unknown... ( together with a nice buddy sheet )

To send it off from Holland to the U.S.A it did cost me 1 euro and 90 cents. Peanuts compared to buying a topre keyboard ;-)

For those who participate : please don't violate the trust(!). This only works if you abide by the rules and give others a chance to try.

I bought a Happy Hacker to try the keys out. Good job I love them.
Nothing comes close in my opinion. It makes writing anything feel good.

I think that you should have a rule that it should be posted to the next person the same or the next day that the first person receives it.
The last time I was involved in something like this, it took the item (a travelling Yoda doll) a very long time to get around the world.

Oh crap, is it too late for me to get in this list?

I hope it has a light or something to signify the actual electrical switching, though. Tactile feedback can be quite deceiving in terms of electrical response, as I found with that Focus FK-2001 and its white XMs that I used to have.

Don't suppose I could somehow get on this list?

The best way to evaluate feel is, of course, a full keyboard and actually typing...but I'm curious to see what they feel like.

In my case, next-in-line would probably have to be US or Canada. Elsewhere can be "big money", $5-10 with Canada Post (without squishing it down really tiny, which is obviously not good)

There is already one other from canada. I'll reshuffle the list to make it more practical ( the path with the least amount of border crossings :-) )

This list grows dynamically : in theory it never closes..... So , I put you on the list.

Some (most?) Canadians don't consider Newfies Canadian.
But then again, I'm an immigrant (been over a decade though!), so I can't really comment on Newfoundlanders.

Newfies have only been part of Canada since 1949, but they did such a heck of a good job in WW1 and WW2 that I'd call them fully Canadian (even if I cantundastand what they be talkin boot, bay).

Would be awesome to be part of the keychain's Canadian leg of the tour, although I'm sure it'll result in a pretty expensive purchase!

I'm still waiting for the keychain guys. I assume the long distance voyage is the culprit.

I have purchased some postage already and will be sure to send it off with haste.

Also, the next person on the list is WhiteRice, and he's pretty close to me. Within the US travel should be brisk. In fact, I just checked the USPS calculator and any delivery to him should only be overnight, even if only mailed by stamp.

Depending on how the item is classified by the shipper, a small package can range from zero fees to just paying your province's tax.  I've had new fuel injectors shipped to me as "warranty return" and paid nothing but the initial $7 USPS shipping charge.  Canada Post isn't even that cheap for shipping within Canada.  I've only ever heard of USPS or Canada Post charging brokerage for large items.  Depending on where the item was manufactured there might be duty on it if the customs officer is having a bad day.

A few years ago, I bought a fuel rail and regulator for my car that was on sale in Oregon for $150usd.  I told them to ship USPS, they confirmed, then shipped it UPS anyways.  Cost me $60usd at the door, after paying $20usd to ship it.  At the time, the exchange rate was complete balls, so in the end I was into it for almost $300cdn.  Company that I bought it from wouldn't do a thing about it, not even store credit for the $60usd as a sorry.

I've been too shy to post on this forum, but I guess there's a first for everything.
That being said, I know this is a little bit of a late post, but is it possible to be added on the list? If you already have it traveling to Canada.... :)

Great forum by the way, been loving it for the past couple of months!

Added...

I need to reshuffle the list due to the many canadians... *grin*

Hate to be a pessimist here, but I don't think it will finish its journey around the Geekhack landscape.  Somebody always flakes out during something like this.

That said, I really hope everyone proves me wrong.  I would like nothing better than to be wrong.

“It's better to be an optimist who is sometimes wrong than a pessimist who is always right”

The people on the this first sinklist will gain credibility points and after participation will increase their chances on being added to the next sinklist( 3x3 switch try board )

People who have proven to be untrustworthy will be banned from any future sinklists( of course )

Regards.

It would be sad if somebody stole this thing.
Society should be built on trustworthy people with enough respect and trustworthiness that they won't steal an item, no matter the price. But the current education and wage systems prevent this from happening.

The switch try board sounds great! When can I sign up? :P

Actually, human nature is what prevents that from happening.

No, I believe that human nature is what we grow up with. Look at statistics.
I believe people steal things because they can make money with them. Why steal when (in a communist or anarchist society) you can get that thing for free?
This is going off topic.

Well, I can promise you that I won't steal this.

It just didn't arrive before I went on vacation for this past week. If all is well, it'll be in my mailbox when I get back tomorrow, outbound on Monday, in Whiterice's mailbox Tuesday.

Because everyone is different and everyone grows up differently. Some are inclined to steal, others aren't. Hell, some people even like to steal. Communism and anarchism tend to assume that everyone is pretty much the same. Not really realistic in any way.

We don't assume that. We just say that people won't have any need to steal in a Communist/Anarchist society, simply because they don't gain anything from it. People nowadays are swayed by advertising, and they want to be on top, because they see the inequalities in life today. Most petty crimes are eliminated because there is nothing to gain. Why steal from your neighbor when you can walk into a store and take it from there?
