Sorry, I didn't think to take any. I just don't know of any interesting environments around here to have in the background.

That, or you could've had the keychain next to my two Model Ms, which didn't seem that interesting to me.

So after playing with the Topre switch for a while I have a few general observations.

1 - It's so much quieter then both my bs and blue cherry keyboards.  It is gf approved. Despite the difference, the audible feedback when you press it down is very satisfying.  I can't really explain it.

2 - Switch feel is awesome. I will definitely be purchasing one of these when I can.  It's a great departure from my bs and blue cherry.

3- The key looks even better in person.  I am not really a fan of the black on black.  I have a white unicomp spacesaver and was really thinking of getting a white 103u or hhkb2, but this has made me rethink it. Very very sharp.

Now on to the blurry cellphone pics!

I just got my hands on it today. Neat little switch. It kinda feels like a rubber dome without the mush. I wasn't impressed with it honestly. I wouldn't spend more than like 120 dollars on a Topre board. I'm in love with my blue cherry board. I need my clickety-clacks.

I just got the switch today.  To me it feels like a rubber dome, but with more subtlety and finesse.

With the ordinary rubber dome keyboards I have, the keys resist movement until I press hard enough, and then they transition all at once to fully down.  Essentially, the tactile bump encompasses the entire travel of the keys.

The Topre feels as if it's using much thinner rubber.  The tactile bump is near the top, but it's a small part of the key travel.  There is a noticeable amount of key travel with light resistance above and below it, and the transition in and out of the bump is very smooth.  Bottoming out feels like hitting a thin, firm rubber layer, maybe like the soft-touch backing on some cell phones.  It's not a sharp stop, but definitely not squishy.  Plus, it's eerily quiet, even making the other rubber domes seem a little noisy.
It's definitely not as stiff or snappy as the Alps switches on my Omnikey.

I was planning to get a board with Cherry browns first, use it for a while, see how I like it, and then think about maybe paying the premium price for a Topre switch board.  After trying this switch, I can see the appeal, but it doesn't make me want to rush out and buy a Realforce or HHKB.  If anything, it reaffirms my plans.  I get the feeling that there's another switch out there that I would like better.

The black on charcoal colors look pretty slick, although with the dim lighting I like to keep in my office it may as well be blank.

Many thanks to SirClickAlot for this sink-list.  I'll try to get some pics and send the switch along in the next few days.

Here's a photo of it with a view of the 360 Bridge over Lake Austin.  The downtown skyline is in the distance.  With a better camera or a longer arm, maybe I could have had the key and the background in focus at the same time:

The problem with the keyring is that it does not give a good overall picture. This is essentially a case where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. One will never really get a good feeling of what a Topre keyboard feel like with just one key switch. For example, the keyring alone will not tell someone what a variable force Topre keyboard feel like.

That said, the keyring is the next best solution. I certainly appreciate all the efforts that went into getting this project going. SirClickAlot and the switch donor deserve a lot of credit for getting this project on the way.

But if there was a keyring with a cherry blue switch or a buckling spring switch I would be able to make a better write up about how it feels different. The topre just felt bland to me.

I am not blaming you for finding the Topre keyring blend. I can see why some will find it blend given that some people have been disappointed with a whole Topre keyboard.

Well, I for one found it quite interesting. It's like, why didn't they make normal rubber domes like this? The world would be a better place if they did. The construction is really quite clever, and the feel is miles above regular rubber domes. Then again, that's all it is, a glorified rubber dome. It's sort of like buying a Ferrari. Sure, it's a Ferrari, but it's still a car. Mechanical keyboards are jet aircraft. And they're jet aircraft that are cheaper than Ferraris. They aren't for everyone, but if you like them and know how to use them they leave cars in the dust. That was my impression of the keychain. I'm going to the post office really soon, either tomorrow or Wednesday, so I'll send it out then. I'm going to ditch the big bulky box and wrap the whole thing in bubble wrap and put it in an envelope if that's OK with everyone. It would save on shipping (Flat Rate Envelope is 4.75 in the US and gets there in two days) and would be just as safe and secure.

I received the Topre Keychain today and I've been clicking it for a bit. I'm honestly not sure if I like it or not. It definitely is a huge improvement over a rubber dome, but it still feels rubber domey if that makes any sense.

Initially, I really like the resistance (from the spring?), but I grew to dislike it as it seemed somewhat counterintuitive for a key to resist being pressed as much as the topre did. I do however like the springy nature of the key as it springs back up quickly.

Most of what I said probably didn't make sense and I probably contradicted myself a few times, but I don't have much experience with keyboards.

Although I'd still love to try a full board, this single key hasn't swayed me from my Cherry MX Browns.

Here is my quick review(opinion..w,.e) on the Topre keychain! I compared it to a few rubber dome boards (one being a keytronic).

Compared to rubbers:
Topre key has a better feel to it overall than a rubber dome key. The mushy bottom out isn’t there, the key springs back up (although some reported they don’t feel it).
I’m not saying it’s the key to rule all other rubber domes. If you can find or have a decent rubber dome board, then you may have a hard time justifying the price tag of a topre board.

Compared to a cherry brown switch:
When compared to a brown switch, I still prefer the brown over Topre.  Why?
-   Relatively cheap
-   Easier to obtain
-   Bigger variety of boards carrying the browns.
However, as far as bottoming out (I still do it from time to time). It’s a pleasure to do on a Topre key (soft landing). Plate mounted switches (even pcb) don’t feel well when bottoming out (hard landing).

Bottom line:
If you have the cash to fork out for a Topre board. Go for it! They have the best resell value when compared to most major cherry switch boards (filco, ducky, cherry, ect).

Will you buy a topre board now that you’ve tried the topre keychain?
Nope, thanks sirclickalot. You saved me $200. Actually no..cause that’s going to keycaps -_-

How about the feel compared to cherry mx when touch typing?
Does it have a quick bump like a rubber dome or more of a linear feel?
Do you have the same control over the actuation poin with a cherry switch or you need to buttom out on them?
Does it has the same springy feel as an mx switch or more like a rubber dome?

I would think of it as a very light and smooth rubber dome with a little extra springiness.  It has a similar force curve to a rubber dome, but it doesn't quite feel the same, and it certainly does not feel like a Cherry MX.  Since Topres are capacitive, you do not need to bottom them out, and you should be able to ride the activation point, but since there is no contact involved in triggering the activation, the activation point might be a little nebulous (I don't game, so I haven't tested this).  I would suggest that the Topre is more of a typists switch than a gamers switch, but gamers have been rubber doming it for years now, so that might not mean much.

The keychain arrived the other day and have had a chance to mess with it. I currently use an IBM Space Saver II rubber dome on my Windows machine and I have a MacBook Pro for a laptop. So, I have been comparing it against those keyboards.

The Topre is quiet, silky smooth and provides a small bit of resistance where the IBM Space Saver II is harder to press and not as smooth. If the MacBook Pro had more travel in it's keys, I 'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between it and the Topre. I don't know, maybe I am too dense to tell the difference.

I am glad that I had a chance to try the Topre keychain. Would I buy it? I am not sure at this point. It certainly is smooth and quiet, but I would only say subtly better than my current keyboards. If I do purchase, I would definitely get the white version since I need to see the letters on the keys. The gray on black is way too hard for me to read.

Picture is attached from 6000ft above sea level in the mountains of Montana.

Keychain arrived today, the topre switch is close to what i expected, but i guess i expected more of a tactile bump in it.  It feels like a really high quality rubber dome, with smoother action.  The tactile point seems to be the soft landing.  It is indeed very quiet though.

I do like the keycap feel, maybe moreso than my POM noppoo keycaps.  The topre feels a little more wobbly than my mx browns.  I really like the repeat keypress feel of the Topre switch over the mx brown, but I like the stability and tactile feel of browns better.

Best way i can summarize the feel of it is smooth, soft, quiet, and dull... Not dull as in boring but dull as in a dull knife.

It is difficult to judge the typing experience from one single key, but i think i am happy I went with browns so far.  The Topre switch feels good, but it just does not have the feedback i was hoping for.  I may buy a topre down the road, but I think I am more interested in trying the clear and blue switches next, which wont be too much longer from now, the STB will arrive, and I can try out the other MX switches.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to test this fabled keyswitch!

It's really not for everyone. I don't think the landing on a Topre switch is harsh at all. And yes these switches do get bottomed out a lot, but so far I don't mind that. Actually bottoming out feels quite pleasant.

I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but what weighting is this particular Topre switch?

I suspect that being mounted on a keychain is having some effect on feel, the Topre is the smoothest-to-bottom-out-on keyboard I've ever used.

The idea that it feels like a Model F is thoroughly bizarre.

This keychain is the only way to experience the true Topre experience, when you did not pay $300 for it and are blinded by that.

Now, I hate to blow my own trumpet, but I think getting an entire Topre keyboard for less than the price of a Filco gives me the most objective insight of anyone around :P

I also got it cheaper than the price of a Filco, and let me just say that I like the cherry switches over the Topre.

SirClickaLot, could you remove me from the Topre keychain sinklist?

Received!
To sum it up, the key is very smooth, but it's really a dome. :P
Very spring, more so, I think, than my Model M.
It's like a springy, smooth, not very tactile, and heavenly rubber dome.
I really want a Realforce now.

Quick delivery time, I got it last night!

I'll have more time to try it out tonight or tomorrow night, but my initial impressions are pretty good.  Super silky smooth, even at extreme angles.  Lighter than my favourite dome board (MS Digital Media KB 3000) that binds up at extreme angles and feels scratchy when pressed, though the tactile feedback profile feels very very similar.  Interesting for sure!

So even after a couple days of trying it out and comparing to my MS dome board, it still just seems silkier and a bit lighter.  I'd have to try out a full board for a bit to get a more complete feel for it of course.

Packaging up now to send to next GH'er.

The keychain arrived today(please tell me you didn't spend $27CAD on shipping  ). I'm not sure I can pass judgment yet, but just keep randomly pressing it.

When would the switch activate? Right after the cup gives way?
