Hello, I've been lurking geekhack for a bit and having issues on which keyboard to buy. I'm looking for a good, cheap mechanical keyboard for gaming. I don't care about the layout, backlighting, rest of that fancy stuff. I just want a good nkro keyboard around the 50 (lol)~100 or so price range.

I've been thinking about the new razer mechanical but that doesn't have too good of a nkro and no option for ps/2 connection but it is cheaper than many other models out.

Thoughts?

For mice you can't overclock the ps/2 port so that's a bit different. I just like having everything register since I've used other "gaming" keyboards and have had inputs dropped and that really screwed me over when it happened. The blackwidow looks nice but I was wondering if there's a better choice in its price range.

PS/2 for keyboards is a little different than mice.  There is no functionality difference between USB and PS/2 for mice as there is for keyboards.

How come overclocking is useful for input devices?

Anyway in keyboards, PS/2 slot do useful. Since it supports NKRO while USB doesn't.

Hmm after reading the wiki I think I'm leaning towards the i-rocks 6230 instead of the blackwidow since I read that browns are better for gaming (?) and it looks like it's good enough for a lot of the key combos I'll use. I play fps, fighting, and rhythm games.

Actually, after seeing the layout more closely it'd probably drive me crazy so I guess I'll get the blackwidow or perhaps the rosewill rk-9000 when it goes on sale.

6KRO plus 4 modifiers is good enough for 5 fingered humans.

Even NKRO is a theoretical construct since applications and the OS will limit you to 12 characters before ghosting occurs (ghosting is the spamming of unpressed characters).  The Nkey Rollover Wiki covers this in some detail so maybe it's best to see what games the OP wants to play.

The functionality is still different.  Just because it's "good enough" doesn't mean it's as good or even better.

I dont suggest an MX blue keyboard for FPS gaming (so not a Razer Black Widow). However I think Ripster is right about the 6KRO being enough (NKRO with USB).

I would suggest to go for a MX brown or black.

Best quality you get for your money would be a Filco, however might be difficult to buy, depends on your location.

It theoretially might help improve response and prevent lag but I fail to see it as necessary.

Look, I don't know much about switches and I've never actually had one under my finger yet (they aren't easy to come across in this part of the world) but as for a cheap mechanical-kinda gaming keyboard, the best option, if you are in the States, should be to look for an old Model M or Model F (better still), I think. Barring dumpster diving and flea market vetting, the best deals are probably when they're closing down or refitting an office and/or when the archeologists excavate another UNESCO-approved IBM warehouse where those things have lain in their original packaging for the last quarter of a century.

This said, I gotta run to Battle.net with my Model M right now.

I would take 6KRO over "overclocking' my ps/2 port any day of the week.

Wait until we start getting all the Razer Black Widow "how to I get the USB 1000hz setting" posts.

I would also wait until the Black Widow is more commonly available.  Will be an easy one to buy and return if you don't like it.  AFAIK the only people at Geekhack with the irocks 6230 pimped them for free  from a iRocks distributor in return for rosy reviews.
We're gonna need disclaimers...

OK, I'll do that instead. So if I decide I don't like the blackwidow, what should I go for instead? The filcos look a tad expensive for me.
Also, hear anything about the new thermaltake keyboard? I read it uses cherry blacks.

If you are a student you can get the Das Cherry Brown for like $100.

Correction:

You can get it if you are a student and DON'T live in Europe.

What's that Mr.T, you got something to say again?

I still think the G80-3494  black is a good keyboard for typing and gaming. Problem is importing costs from China >:/ but if you can bare it like i'm gonna have to, it would be an excellent keyboard.
