I checked that the coupon actually works this time. Expires Thursday (10-7-2010).

Chiefvalue is owned by Newegg (the mail even comes through mx10.newegg.com, and my RK-9000 came in a Newegg box).

Coupon was extended to the 7th.

Also, according to Slickdeals, we're overpaying by a factor of ten because the logo is ugly.

Apparently a "pure awesomeness" logo is better.

Has anyone tried nail polish to remove that logo?  Not sure what it would do to the plastic but I bet Ripster knows.

Got this keyboard today. Compared to my Cherry Blue Filco (non-NKRO), the RK-9000 doesn't seem as crisp. The Filco produces a nice, sharp pitch when a key is actuated, the sound us MX Blue people love. As for the RK-9000, it almost reminds of a Cherry Brown board when typing fast. For some reason, the high pitch gets muffled, possibly by the key bottoming out. It seems like it is easier to bottom out harder on the RK-9000 over the Filco. I think there is slightly more key travel after the actuation point which might explain why. (When I bottom out on the Filco, which doesn't feel as far off from the actuation point, I still hear that distinct high pitch.) Also, the spacebar is more of a thud on the RK-9000, while a gratifying Rice Krispie crushing click on the Filco. I don't think this board would replace your Filco Blues, given a choice, which is sort of what I was hoping for.

I wonder if that's due to the keycap thickness, the factors you mentioned, or a combination.

We need someone on OCN to lead a crusade to get people to order our keycaps because they will definitely be compatible with this board. :3

Yeah, maybe that is it. Tinkering around some more, the switch just doesn't sound as loud as the Filco when pushing slowly. As for the key travel thing I mentioned before, could just be in my head. We are talking millimeters after all.

It might be, too, that it needs a little while to break in; we were just discussing this in another thread.  Also, Elitekeyboards (allegedly) does a lot more quality control, especially with Cherry blue 'boards, to ensure all switches click appropriately.  Give a week or two of good use, and see how it compares then.

Might not. Doesn't Signature Plastics have a bunch of options for the stem height on MX keys? Flush with the bottom of the cap or somewhat recessed to pretty recessed?

If so, wouldn't the keycap start at a lower position?

I can't really tell a difference between travel on my Filco and the RK-9000, but I have a brown Filco so the switches don't have identical feel.

I got one today.  I overcame my better judgement, all reason, and my budget and pulled the trigger.  It's my first cherry blue and I love it, not as loud as I had expected.  I'd take a picture, complete with red geekhack escape key, but my wife is gone with the camera.

Agreed... My post wasn't to discourage anybody from buying the RK-9000. I do like this board and am using it now, but it doesn't seem as clicky-tacular like the Filco.

I bought one of these as well.  I'm really liking it so far. (Long-time OCN poster, first timer here)

I've been researching replacement keysets for it.  Does anyone know if it uses the exact same switch placement and key height as the Filco boards?  I looks damn-near identical to me.

More importantly, I'm looking into having some custom keysets created.  I'd like to do this as a community project, maybe a join effort from users both here and on OCN.  I'd really like to see a full set of high-quality doubleshot keys, maybe in  black with red-text.

Is anyone else interested in this? I was thinking about making a thread specifically for this idea but I'm not sure how many people would be into it.  More importantly, I don't know if keys made for the RK-9000 would be compatible with Filco boards...

Point is, I need some help if we want to make it happen. PM me if you have any thoughts.

Welcome to Geekhack!

Sorry, don't have the keyboard but if it IS Filco/Das compatible there is a group buy going on for Double Shot keycaps here.

I did just buy one of these, but don't have a filco or das.  Anyone out there have both who can confirm?

I got mine when it was $75.

I know you(muchadoaboutnothing) got it cheaper.... *bickers* (I could have got a cheeseburger at mcdonalds a momentous occasion)

Yep I'm from ocn... Seems a bit more relaxed here(watch me get insta banned). Wish you had more computer related topics.

I can't say i have anything to compare it to, besides rubbers(what the cool kids call them).

I dunno if I'm qualified to remove my space/shift, considering i removed my escape key with a butter knife.... I saw your fancy tool ripster, but i didn't have any wire that small of a gauge to makeshift one.

Least i know what the hype is about now. I forgot and typed on my laptop keyboard for a bit, it's just strenuous. I'm thinking of removing the laptop keyboard(Can't find a way to disable) and just sitting the long rosewill on top of it convenience and looks be damned.

I'm pretty happy with this keyboard. Slowly getting use to the blues, but it's coming to me pretty fast... Soon gonna need that full nkro(kidding).

I will end this book with a question. How does one not bottom out on the space bar or backspace? I have gotten pretty good with the other keys.

Dude, it was only $3 cheaper...

Learning to not bottom out takes a little bit of effort with the thumbs (strongest fingers). Backspace isn't hard for me...

I don't care about the spacebar.  I like to pound the **** out of it.  Filco has the best spacebar I have ever used with the Realforce coming in second.  Other keyboards seem too rattly.  Filcos have a nice, solid "ker-chunk" when you press them.

It was sarcasm, McDonald's generally gives me the craps. When i had originally wrote it i thought it was $2.

Thanks for the input on the board tho, some of your observations were the reason i decided to order it.

Quote from: ripster;233908
Don't worry about the bottoming out.  Accurate, fast, and relaxed typing is the goal.  Over time you'll find you're pounding the keys less.

Ask Ron "Typewriter" Mingo, once the world's fastest typist.  He ALWAYS bottomed out.

You know i always thought of it as a groove or flow that guy has a great flow. Guess i will get use to the click click click kerchunk. I seem to do it on the enter key as well, I have the need to hit big keys show them there place.

Maybe if these rosewill's sell well they will put out a smaller form factor.

I'm adjusting to mine.  It was a bit clumsy at first but getting used to it and starting to speed up.  I was pleasantly surprised with the sound.  Love the sound and find it is NOT too loud to use when on conference calls.  Well, maybe it is, but to me the sound is so nice, screw anybody who doesn't like it!  And so far nobody has complained.

I didn't care for it in the pictures to be honest.  Kinda plain looking and somewhat large.  Also the name is kind of synonymous with "house brand" rather than an industry leader in the area.  Having said all that, now that it's on my desk, I'm not bothered by it so chances are I won't screw with trying to remove it.

Plus the finish of the Filcos is the best.  Even the back of my Topre is not as evenly finished as my Filcos.

Of course I don't spend a lot of time looking at the back of my Filcos.

The guys at OCN are also trying to figure out how to remove the Logo. Winner of the Rosewill Logo removal mod would get max rep points there.

Meanwhile someone needs to crack open one of these with a butter knife.  (Crack may have been a poor choice of words).

Hate that rep system. YAY brownie points.

What do you need the keys off? or actually open it up? There are at least 2 warranty stickers in the back, they would take a bit to get off with a hair dryer, the one says "Do Not Remove O.K." that's just asking for it.

I figured i would ask since i am skilled with the butter knife lol.

I wish manufacturers would stop branding boards altogether, especially ones coming from costar that force the LED row to just above the numpad. If you slouch, you can't see any of the illuminated LEDs for the top row of the numpad. Filcos, ABS M1 and Rosewill (probably others as well) branded boards do this. At least on Duckys they've put the LEDs on the corresponding keys.

If any Canadians are interested Rosewill RK 9000 is now on sale at newegg.ca for 84.99 and $7 shipping.

Comes to about $100 shipped pretty good deal compared to about $140 for the cheapest filco from elitekeyboards.

I want my next keyboard labeled "KEYBOARD".

Foster's, "Australian for Beer" (at least in commercials)

BEER, "Cheap ass generic for BEER"

Looks like Newegg and Chiefvalue are done with the $85 pricepoint for now.

The guys at OCN are also trying to figure out how to remove the Logo. Winner of the Rosewill Logo removal mod would get max rep points there.

Meanwhile someone needs to crack open one of these with a butter knife.  (Crack may have been a poor choice of words).

Surely this isn't really an obstacle that people are finding it difficult to  surmount, is it?  Just off the top of my head there's at least a few things I would try:

Why not just using an acrylic paint that matches the case color?  Apply by dabbing with a damp sponge in several layers? (blacking out with a permanent marker first if too white to cover initially?)

I would think that given the texture of the material it would disguise well...

Of course making a nice custom engraved label/badge/metal piece of some sort and just slapping it on top would be equally effective wouldn't it?

(Or did I miss some sarcasm somewhere?)

I'm open to suggestions. The size constraints (covering the logo completely but not the num/caps/scroll lock lights) might pose a slight challenge.

I can't think of anything to put over it.
