Where can I get springs for a ghetto cherry red MX mod?
« on: Tue, 19 October 2010, 08:50:10 »
Hi guys,
I have a bunch of Cherry keyboards with black MX switches.
I would love to mod one of them in such a way that they feel like red MX switches.

If I understood it right, all I have to do is to replace the black springs with lower force ones. This leads to my main question:
Where can I get approx 104 springs for this mod - cheap preferred? I don't want to rip appart another keyboard, the MX blues are too precious to me.

Perhaps some of you guys knows that incidentially there is a car/shop/dentist/you name it where I can get plenty of the MX red springs?

Any ideas?

Cheers
Matthias

how about swapping some black springs for some blue springs, i just did this (to test out for you) and the blue spring  or brown spring sorta just feel the same (almost same force anyway). so like why don't you swap out some lesser used blue springs, like the f1-f12, +,-, 1-0,alt,ctrl,win,shift,tab,caps,~,esc,arrow,prntscrn,scrool,pause,home,pgdn,up. who knows maybe you'll even like a stronger return on the spacebar/enter.
if you do all that, thats at least 40keys that can be modded to ghetto red and you can still keep the alphabet letters on your cherry blue keyboard.

If you also have a spare board with browns or blues, you could do a mass spring swap and also end up with a set of ghetto clears to go along with your ghetto reds.
You can call me... Keyboard Otaku... or not quite...

Thanks guys for the suggestions! I will try to get an MX11800 - I allways wanted to find a cheap way to get my hands on MX browns anyway. Unfortunatelly they are not so often listed in ebay in Germany. Much more Cherry G80s around here... perhaps I will try to get one of these again. My wife will kill me but anyways...
@calavera: Thanks for your offer, but probably shipping from CA is more expensive than a used Compaq/G80... :-(

Cheap browns in Germany? Those pretty much don't exist unless you get very lucky and pick up some MX11800 or specialty G80 (G80-8xxx) on the 'bay. Believe it or not, the Filcos from The Keyboard Co. are the first more or less inexpensive option.

Someone should do a special order on German layout G80-3000s with browns (and clear - EDIT: or black - space bar switch rather than the usual obnoxious grey one!). Problem is, seems like minimum quantity is like 40..45.

Hardware in signatures clutters Google search results. There should be a field in the profile for that (again).

This message was probably typed on a vintage G80-3000 with blues. Double-shots, baby. :D

Century Spring sells a wide variety of springs including very light force ones.  You'd need to do some measuring to figure out what size and spring rate you need, but I'm guessing their range includes what you need.
