So on a keyboard forum I'd be willing to bet there are a few pen/pencil nerds.

I'm looking to get a nice set for my desk. One pen, one pencil. Nothing that will put me in the poorhouse, but if it looks nice and lasts with decently affordable refills (absolute max $100), I'd be willing to do it.

Or if there really aren't any good sets, I'd just do a separate purchase.

Anyone want to give any advice?

Is the pencil manly, or are you talking about your hairy knuckles?

What do your palms look like:

Go with a typical pencil pen. They are cheap. Get a separate eraser.

ewww.

dane cook and his just as horrible look a like ryan reyolds should be cane'd or be sharia'd or whatever medieval type of torture.

as a side note, i listen to slacker(pandora ripoff) and it's good for comedy, they just made a "ban artist" button, i have used it maybe twice or so, but i know for sure i've used it to ban dane cook.

oh and to be on topic, i dont' like pens, i use ticonderoga tri writes, sharpened with a 2$ staedtler sharpener

i've cobbled a 1$ staples container, glue and drilled a few holes for an all in one pencil sharperner/holder thing.

my fiancee say's it looks nasty as sin.

  • Ticonderoga Black for sketching
  • Pilot G2 with Mont Blanc refill for most general purpose
  • Pilot Varsity fountain pen for writing

I haven't yet found a mechanical pencil that I really like, even though I use them a lot. I also lose my pens a lot, so I am loathe to spend a lot of money on them.

I'm with Beav on this one: I don't spend much on pens because I lose them so often.  I just use white Bics with blue ink, keep the black ink away from me.  As for pencils, I use Staples brand mechanicals.  Cheap, don't care if I lose them.

I am addicted to the giveaway pens from the nearby sushi joint, though.  It's a clicky pen with a really nice tip that glides over paper a lot easier than the Bics do, but there isn't much ink left in either of them, so I'll probably just replace the tips in them soon, and not like them as much.  I may just like the feel of the pens themselves, though, as they are really light.

I've officially said more about my writing utensils than I ever thought I would.  Kill me.

I don't need anything expensive, but I am kinda picky about what I like - even just for everyday stuff.  The Bic Atlantis Gel Pens are really smooth; I think those are my favorite - no skipping or gloopy smudges.  But for pencils, since a basic #2 is impossible to keep as sharp as I like for any length of time, I actually like the mechanical "Quicker Clicker" ones (by Pentel?) that advance the lead from the side instead of the top like a ballpoint pen.  Mostly use .05 leads for math and figuring equations and such - .07 for writing sometimes.

I like the mechanicals because they are always the same width and don't get fuzzier as they wear off the point.  If I have to use a sharpener I like the finest points possible.  I used to get really annoyed with having to take math tests and quizzes if I didn't have my Clicker.  Dull pencils were particularly annoying when trying to factor things for some reason.

yes, that's right, wrap that in quotes. Damn those alleged floppy disks.

Ummm, there is just the one, which I believe you have already mentioned your distaste for.

Pen = whatever is lying around.  I tend not to write in pen if I can help it.

Pencil = Rotring Ticky 0.5, the same one I've had for over twenty years.  Doubles as a generic prodding device for recessed reset buttons, gunge-digger for between keys, etc.  Always preferred it to the Staedtler versions.  As for leads, HB.  Always.

Since you are looking for a set for your desk, I am thinking that you were referring to a ball point pen, weren't you?

I tend to avoid ball point pen if I can because my handwriting is much better with fountain pens, but that's me. When it comes to ball point pen, I find Parker to be the best. I hate Cross ball point pens, but again, that's just me.
