Anyone got spare springs for a Model M they can part with?
« on: Sat, 23 October 2010, 09:51:11 »
This is a repeat of the words I put over in the classifieds section a minute ago. Apologies for repetitiojn; I suspect this forum gets a lot more passing traffic.

Having lovingly taken apart my Model M to clean it and very carefully stretch-damaged the spring under the space bar (seems to be stretched to the point that with the space bar back in place it always registers as being pressed), I'm looking for a couple of replacement springs.

I'm in the UK, and many spring sellers round and about charge a fortune (relatively) in postage (especially since the UK has a real dearth of companies actually willing to provide such things in quantities less than a million bajillion units), and it'd be pot luck as to whether or not I guessed the right spring. I thought about buying a replacement Model M, and maybe then breaking one for a lifetime's worth of parts, but they seem to be a lot more expensive here in the UK than in the US

Does anyone have a couple they can sell to me for a not too horrific price? I'm going to keep tinkering with the stretched spring and see what I can do, but I'm not hopeful.
Habitually, a '93 Model M that I've lovingly coaxed back to life with help and parts provided by the lovely people here.

When the desk is heaving with junk, I have to switch down to one of those tiny little Cherry keyboards. I use it until having no numpad is inconvenient enough to make me tidy up :)

I'm sure Unicomp could sell you a bag for next to nothing? They're very very helpful sorts.

Thanks - eMail to Unicomp dispatched (and a return from Chuck already in my inbox; it says he's not in at the minute, but still, it's quite friendly  )

Sending invisible karma rays to ricercar.  It's not the first time he and others have done this.  Bravo.

Well that was a disappointing complete bust. Not one spring made it to me, including the packet I purchased from Unicomp :(

Anyone else willing to have a go at sending me a couple of replacement springs?

Where are you?  If you're in the US, I can shoot you some for free. If you're outside the US, just pay for postage, and they are yours. Do you need just the springs, or springs and hammers?

Edit: I didn't read your whole first post, sorry. But PM me your address, I will get a postage quote, and I can send you some springs. Unfortunately, it's usually a few bucks to send to the UK what is normally $0.25 in postage costs to send domestically. And I did exactly what you thought to do, but with an old terminal board. Maybe look into that? They typically go for much less than a "usable" model m.

I'm in europe and can match theferencs offer, might save you a little bit of postage.
Shipping would be 1.45 € for 50g, 0.75€ for 20g of springs.

I'm in the UK, I have a Mechanical Touch which is a POS that you can have some spring from, no idea if they will match or not, If you cover postage you can have the whole thing if you want.

Thanks chaps; I shall apply down the list! I'd hate to end up getting far more than I actually need.

I have springs + hammers leftover from a repair, let me know if these other offers don't work out. I'll mail them to you.
