Anyone have issues with a GMMK and new HP Thunderbolt Dock G4?
« on: Fri, 02 August 2024, 14:49:22 »
Good afternoon people

It's been ages since I've posted here, mostly because it's been at least four years since I bought any new input devices.

I just this afternoon replaced my old Zbook Thunderbolt 3 Dock because it'd had a dead USB port for a while and the IT guy at work said mine was the last functioning one in the company :/

Just the last few days I'd been noticing that my keyboard would disconnect and reconnect, I'd been hearing the little USB notification sounds and finally realized it was the keyboard when I was typing when the disconnect sound happened.  So, I figured it was time to give the new dock a try, since the ones he'd ordered had come in and he'd told me he intended one of them for me.

Well, it hasn't been going well.  I haven't had exactly the same problem, but I've been doing lots of typing this afternoon and quite frequently the keyboard will either drop a handful of characters or else repeat the last one 10-15x.  Often enough to be really detrimental to productivity.

I'm typing this now on an absolutely execrable Logitech rubber dome thing plugged into the same USB port that my GMMK was and aside from my hands absolutely hating me, it's working fine.

GMMK was bought maybe 4 years ago as a barebones and I used Gazzew Boba U4 (not thocky) RGBs and /dev/tty keycaps.  Not sure if it's relevant but I figured I'd give as much detail as I could.

Could a bad switch cause this?  Should I see if there's new firmware?  Anything else I should try?  I love the GMMK; it's the best of the good keyboards I have IMHO and my coworkers like it because it's also the quietest.  I was thinking I should probably take the caps off and give it a deep cleaning as it's been exposed to some dirt lately (they're remodeling our office, and a couple days I've come in to dust all over my desk from workers pulling wire above the drop ceiling)

        Thanks for using the GMMK.

We've had a few customers report a very similar issue and they were able to fix it.

        This is what they did.

        - Tried installing different switches.

        - Reset the GMMK. You can do this by holding FN + ESC then F1 + F3 + F5 for about 10 seconds.

        - Open the GMMK editor and select Restore Defaults.

I did the second two and it's been working OK all afternoon.  So, hopefully I don't have to find another board.

I spoke too soon.  I have it plugged into my laptop directly now (couple year old HP ZBook) and it's working; I moved it to the dock this morning thinking problems were solved and it started acting up again.
