[IC] OG40 - 40% "Cherry flavoured" wireless keyboard
« on: Thu, 27 March 2025, 07:59:03 »
Hello everyone, we are Cosmos Design. Today, we proudly introduce our studio's first officially released project – OG40.

When 40% Meets G80

OG40's design inspiration is undeniably inspired by Cherry's iconic G80 series.

While the market features numerous tributes to this classic, many remain out of reach for us due to the limitations imposed by a 40% layout.

In this way, OG40 was conceived – not as a replica, but as an ingenious reinterpretation spanning three decades. It stands as a heartfelt tribute to Cherry and the golden era.

The Philosophy Behind the Layout: Retro & Friendly

For the OG40 layout, our goal was to capture the design traits of keyboards from the 80s to the early 90s.

Reflecting on the era before ANSI/ISO standardization—a time when experimental and unconventional key arrangements truly blossomed—we recall that the Win Key had not yet been conceived, BAE (Big Ass Enter) reigned supreme, and the 10U spacebar proudly occupied its own line.

Therefore, supporting BAE/10U spacebar, WKL (Win Key Less)/HHKB-style layouts became our primary focus for OG40. To achieve a balanced visual proportion and design aesthetic, we refined the incisors and fixed the layout at 14U.

While this configuration may not fully align with the minimalism prized by 40% purists, our intention is for OG40 to serve as a beautiful and practical desktop tool rather than a mere decorative piece. The expanded symbol area significantly enhances usability for those new to 40% keyboards.

Recognizing that keycap compatibility is a persistent challenge for 40% keyboards, we provide both 13-column and 14-column layouts within the 14U framework. The 13-column version works seamlessly with standard base kits and retro options, while the 14-column configuration—when used with the classic 40% kit featuring a 1.75U Enter—offers a complete symbol area.

Additionally, both BAE and 10U spacebars are designed to work well with common ANSI/ISO keycaps, giving users versatile options.

Reimagining a Classic

The G80's design is celebrated for its wide bezels, prominent forehead, rounded corners, and the iconic Cherry lip. Yet, the original model's case seam, rigid side profiles, and flat bottom left room for improvement. Determined to modernize its aesthetic and refine its elegance, we reimagined the classic design.

With its 14U design and wide bezels, the OG40 aligns closely with standard 60% keyboard dimensions. To prevent proportional imbalance that can arise from direct scaling, we drew inspiration from Panasonic KX-E8283: extending the lower edge while maintaining the original forehead and side bezels, which creates smooth transitions to the Cherry MX lips and ensures a harmonious balance in width across all four sides.

We eliminated the case seam, replacing the original angular waistline with a steep inward taper following the bezel contours, enhancing design integrity and modern elegance. A glossy accent strip highlights the USB-C area, adding visual depth.

The wide bezel structure provides ample design space. To realize OG40 as a refined tool, we split the PCB: separating the controller into the forehead area while using a sub-board to maintain the USB-C's visual centrality.

These adjustments not only reduce front height (currently 17.1mm, with new solutions targeting 16.3mm) but also optimize wireless signal strength.

Wireless Tri-mode: Essential for Modern Keyboards

As a modern keyboard, wireless connectivity is indispensable. Only with fully featured tri-mode Vial support can 40% layouts truly deliver a satisfying typing experience and engaging fun.

With tri-mode implemented, the process of switching between modes and channels became a further area of optimization. Conventional methods—whether toggle switches or key combinations—either compromised aesthetics or fell short in intuitiveness. This led us to develop an elegant alternative.

We preserved the original badge and indicator design, but transformed indicators from stickers to metal buttons with 3 microswitches underneath,  elevating the keyboard's premium finish while creating a distinct interactive control area.

Case, Adjustable O-ring And the Weight

Integrating microswitches required a complete structural redesign. Early prototypes featured a unibody case with a dedicated controller compartment, but the cramped space made it challenging to install the microswitches. We switched to a top/bottom case design with hidden seams to preserve visual unity.

This change led to an O-ring adjustment: we replaced fixed aluminum supports with interchangeable silicone supports in the base to optimize support across different layouts. Users can mix and match supports or O-rings of varying hardness for a personalized typing experience, while also allowing for future expansion into plateless or top-mounted configurations.

As an homage to Cherry's legacy, we crafted a cherry-shaped engraved weight (considering nested design) paired with vintage-style badge contours, establishing OG40's identity as a modern tri-mode 40% keyboard with "Cherry Flavour."

FAQ

Why "OG40"?

Originally named "Clichés" (a nod to timeless design elements), it was renamed OG40 internally for better memorability—evoking retro vibes while abbreviating "Optimized G40". "Clichés" might become the name for our retro series if it continues.

Will Plateless be offered as an option?

Likely, even Alps and EC compatibility in mind. Final decision based on community voting.

Will Wired-only PCB be offered as an option?

No. We believe tri-mode Vial delivers the modern keyboard experience.

New to 40%?

OG40 includes our optimized default configuration and digital manual  (with a physical version under consideration) for quick onboarding.

When is the group buy happening?

Not entirely sure yet, but optimistically late June - early July 2025 .

Work in Progress: Co-design

Through 40+ iterations, OG40 remains embryonic. While every detail underwent intense internal debate, as newcomers we acknowledge our limits. At current completion, we're confident to share it publicly.

The exterior and most internal structures are finalized, with PCB in development. Remaining details will follow prototyping and community feedback. Join Cosmos Design's Discord to participate in OG40's development - we eagerly await your input.

Future updates will be posted here. Thank you.

Love this. The buttons are a great idea too.
I'm here for a platelets option, but I think this might also be great with 1/4 plates. Plateless will certainly make it easy to accommodate BAE.

I absolutely adore this and it's a perfect complement to my Model F and Haitun40.

Please, please, please replace the power indicator with a numlock indicator. Nobody needs a power LED. A numlock indicator, though, is more period correct and actually useful, especially on a 40.

The voting for split spacebar configurations has been initiated in the IC form. Moving forward, we will determine which split configurations to support based on the voting results.

Thank you for your suggestion.

The power indicator won’t be changed since wireless is one of the OG40’s primary features, and we think a physical switch is a must.

However, according to the current IC form data we have collected, there is significant demand for the wired version as well. Therefore, we are considering developing a new version of indicator keys for the wired variant, maintaining the same layout as traditional keyboards (i.e., Scroll, Num, and Caps). This would require meeting a MOQ to get engineering development support.

Changelog

3/28:

1. To distinguish between the keyboard's Bluetooth and 2.4G wireless modes, we have adjusted the LED indicator colors:
In 2.4G mode, all three LEDs adopt a green-like color similar to the G80-3000 model.
In Bluetooth mode, all three LEDs adopt a blue-like color similar to the G80-3494 model.
For wired connections, the LEDs retain the color from the last-used wireless mode without changes.
The keyboard defaults to 2.4G mode with green LEDs upon initial startup.

2. Due to the inconvenience for some overseas users in obtaining blade lithium batteries or facing transportation difficulties, we are considering changing the power supply method of OG40 to 18650 or 14500 lithium batteries by designing a battery compartment to facilitate user installation and replacement.
This proposal is currently in the feasibility verification phase, and verification progress will be updated subsequently. If proven viable, we will initiate a vote to determine whether to adopt the new power supply method.

4/2:

1. Added Wired Version with QMK/Vial support and open-sourced firmware.
Due to functional differences between wired and wireless versions, the three indicator switches on the wired version will be remapped to Caps Lock, Scroll Lock, and Num Lock. For users who choose the Tri-Mode version, the contents remain unchanged.
If you purchase an additional Tri-Mode PCB, Power and Wireless keys will be included with the PCB for replacement.

2. In the latest version, the angle has been adjusted from 8° to 7.5°, the front height reduced from 17.08mm to 16.12mm, and the EKH lowered from 21.51mm to 21.15mm;

3. The front NCR nameplate is confirmed to be replaceable, secured by screws;

4. Copper bottom case support planned, including a natural copper finish (with anti-rust treatment) and powder-coated options.

5. Support for Top, semi-plate, and plateless;

6. WK case support (a WK layout voting will follow);

7. Soldered PCB compatible with MX/Alps switches and mx stab mounts, including a soldering fork and plateless positioning plate with the PCB.

8. Exploring better ways to showcase internal structures in the PC version; may cancel if expectations are unmet.

4/14:

1. Refer to the curvature comb to optimize the rounded external contours.

2. Introduce an optional weight with grooves to facilitate DIY sticker application by users.

3. By redesigning the original variable O-ring silicone support, PCB Gasket support has been achieved. Currently, the supported mounts on the OG40 include O-ring, Top/Semi-plate, and PCB Gasket/Plateless.

5/20:

1. The PCB now supports WK.

2. To accommodate different usage scenarios, the PCB design has been refined as follows:

The hot-swappable PCB, paired with plate-mounted stabilizers, emphasizes ease of installation and offers basic layout compatibility.

The soldered PCB, combined with PCB-mounted stabilizers, prioritizes layout compatibility and supports both MX and Alps switches.

3. Due to the specific stabilizer and balance bar requirements for Alps switches, users intending to use Alps are encouraged to participate in the Alps plate vote. to help further tailor the design of dedicated plates.

4. The mounting method for the backplate badge has been finalized as external fixation, secured with high-quality titanium-coated screws.

5. The original combined silicone support structure for the O-ring and PCB gasket has been separated into two distinct components, enhancing the performance of both mounting systems.

6. A metal frame has been introduced to accommodate complex layout compatibility and various mounting styles. It features a Force Break slot and utilizes footpads to isolate vibrations. Considering the varying density and damping properties of different materials, this hybrid configuration effectively reduces resonance during key presses. Brass has been selected as the material for the frame due to its superior performance in this context.

7. The structure of the micro switch buttons has been optimized to improve both performance and the assembly experience.

The designs for both the cases and PCBs have been finalized and submitted for prototyping. The Group Buy is scheduled to begin in mid to late June, at which time the pricing will be revealed.
