Alpha N key rollover vs. 2 key rollover?
« on: Tue, 02 November 2010, 07:50:06 »
Former geekhack lurker here, found you from OCN originally, figured I'd join up to ask a question.

The keyboard I'm looking at says it has alpha N-key rollover.  Is this some kind of middle ground between a full NKRO board and a regular 2 or 3 key rollover board?  Would this be better than your average, run of the mill bargain keyboard is what I'm asking really?

Cherry g80-11900

I've got a pretty small desk and actually would use the mousepad from time to time.  I often am studying computer cert books and have to be on the computer at the same time, so it would be nice to put the book where my mouse is normally.  I also game a little, so that is why I asked.

This specs sheet says it has alpha n-key rollover, so I was just wondering if I could expect something a little better than normal or if this is pretty much standard on keyboards today.

I have stumbled across "Alpha N-key rollover" in US Cherry catalogs, but I'd say it's marketing BS (it's applied to all their boards from the lowly G83 upwards). The term might be in agreement with what IBM used to specify (I think the Model M was also considered "N-key rollover"), but it doesn't have anything to do with true NKRO capability. The matrix is merely routed so that collisions during typing are avoided for the most part. Should be an IBM-style matrix.

BTW, in the rubber dome world, rather basic models often have pretty good key matrices while their fancier illuminated and partly even "gaming" cousins have a "cost-cutting" matrix. The same happens with key feel.
Hardware in signatures clutters Google search results. There should be a field in the profile for that (again).

This message was probably typed on a vintage G80-3000 with blues. Double-shots, baby. :D

I thought as much.  Sounded kind of gimmicky.  Thanks for your replies.  Either way, I think I'll give it a try.  It can't be any worse for rollover than the junk keyboard I've been using lately.  It will definitely be an improvement in the quality and feel.  I rarely do any typing (at length) anymore, so I think the Cherry black switches will be fine.  I hear blacks are quieter and good for gaming as well.
