Realforce 103u vs Deck Legend
« on: Wed, 03 November 2010, 04:17:21 »
HI, I am new to mechanical keyboards. I been reading about all type of mechanical and decide to get one. I dont have the money to try all the switches, so i narrow it down to these 2.

60 percent gaming and 40 percent surfing the net.

which one would you recommend?

Thanks

After reading some of the comments, still undecided. I live in the USA, reason i went mechanical route because of nkro or at least 6.

Realforce because of build quality and topre switch

Deck because back lit and heard is better for gaming

The one you're currently using. Mechanical switches won't help you in either category, although some companies' marketing is trying to promote expensive keyboards to gamers.
On the other hand, if you just want to spend cash and join the trend - feel free to browse the GH Wiki.

That's not true. Since rubber domes only have 2kro, they are worse than mechanicals with 6kro or nkro for FPS gamers. Also mechanicals *can be* more comfortable to type on for long periods of time than rubber domes.

The Sidewinder X4 (?) is NKRO, and it's rubber dome.

Ok aside from that...MOST rubber domes are 2kro.

Hahaha!

And I was the guy complaining nobody has done a Deck Legend review here.

(...)

Kinda sad that Deck hasn't really done anything since then.

Deck added a tactile MX in the lineup couple years ago.

As for the thread. I own both Topre and Deck.

I use the Topre at work and the Deck at home for gaming.
Strictly typing - I'm in love with the Topre. Want to have babies with it.
Strictly gaming - Deck Linear
Allround Gaming/Typing I prefer the Deck Tactile.

I like backlit for gaming... And Deck rules the world of backlit boards.
Closing comment, Cherry switches in Deck can endure more cycles before failing. Which I think is better for a gaming board.

As what was said... Don't buy on someone else comments ;-)

Well its a matter of price and bang for your bucks.

filco and ducky look reasonably good enough to me. Also the Filco/Ducky both have choices of blue, black or brown cherry mx switches; and their both NKRO when using a USB to PS2 adapter. So does the price bump for a Topre and Deck worth getting those instead ? You should research more and ask yourself that.

After all it's just a keyboard :/

Anyway i choose option (C) Filco Majestouch NKRO ABS Silkscreened or Ducky 9008 with PBT laser etched keycaps; and possibly even the Cherry G80-3494 Lycus-2 black with laser etched POM keycaps (however hard to get the Cherry KB for a reasonable price, and theres the question if you like cherry mx red switches or not). You could also mod them to have double shot keys if you prefer (can buy double shots from the GH bulk from Signature Plastic).

Your best bet is to not listen to Moogle because he's a Ducky fanboy (a keyboard unavailable outside of Asia).

And Moogle, keyboards are serious business! A Deck or Realforce is not "just a keyboard". Own one before you comment on it.

Drpepper could be from Asia you never know :x But you are right, if he isn't from Asia then Ducky may not be cost effective :/

I don't need to own one to doubt that any keyboard priced much higher than Ducky or Filco is worth getting :/ but thats just my opinion.

Example do i need to own a Ferrari to know that a simple Toyota Altis is sufficient for me ? o_O; It's not rocket science.

@TS

Do you have a budget, or if price is no object ? If the later, then Topre me thinks :x

Ducky has manufacturing problems? Haven't seen that in the forum.

Definitely don't get a Ducky.

They break easily in the middle of a game.  You can pound on a Deck or Topre with no problem.

I think he is refering to the pbt key caps on the kb that were too stiff and were spoiling the Ducky (someone from GH mentioned this). I'm not sure if they've fixed this problem in the new batch, but since i'm getting the pbt variant i will check.

It's a design problem.  See that little tab - it partly holds the top face of the keyboard together.  WhiteRice's broke.  Lots of broken ones on the Chinese forums.

Bad design.  Plastics.

Common with new keyboard manufacturers to have teething problems.  Ask Metadot about the DAS.

Squarebox owns one of them, maybe he can test it out :/

Hm ... squarebox did mention that when he tried flexing the ducky it did sorta flex. His Filco didn't o_o;

Then again the Filco's abs casing seemed to be much thicker :/

But if the keyboard is flat on the table and you don't bash on your keyboard, does it really matter :/ ?? it's got an aluminium backplate so isn't that sturdy enough ?

So far, this problem occurs only in the first batch of 1087's (because the 2nd batch isn't out yet ^^, we will see...), so... 9008 or 9004 should be fine (assuming that they r using the "traditional+reliable design")

There are mechanicals with 2-NKRO as well.
Main point is, the OP only does gaming and surfing. No "typing" as such. ;-) I don't suppose he got aggravated by something in his current keyboard?

I was very strongly considering a Deck (Purchased one even, but they sent me a linear instead of a tactile, and were out of stock on the tactiles) because I liked the idea of heavier switches (clears), then I got a cheap keyboard with browns, and really like them, they're not too light like I feared.

Also, I wasn't too impressed with the Deck. For a keyboard that costs around $190 shipped, it looked sort of cheap, mostly because I couldn't stand the font they used on the keys, especially on the "word keys" (Page up/down, print screen, and the like). The backlighting was awesome though, very impressed by that. The actual keys themselves felt good when I messed around with it though.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY NEXT TIME!

I clearly mentioned that the flex on the Ducky is due to its thin shell.

I did the Ricercarflex test on both my Filco and Ducky 9008. Both showed LITTLE TO NO FLEX

If u did read more, U should know that WhiteRice's is a 1087 and mine is a 9008.
They don't even have the same parts...

I would KILL for a Deck Legend with German layout. By now I might even be willing to pay the hefty price... Even without Media keys.

I for one was very impressed with the built quality of the Deck 82 I had for a while and I absolutely LOVED they keys. One because u could feel, see and smell (yes smell!) the quality of those keys and two because of that awesome font. Loved it!

I would kill for a Deck Legend or 82 with German layout but I would severely injure someone for a full set of Deck keys with that awesome layout, too. I might even be satisfied with a set of ANSI keys....
