The ticket sale page requires a cell phone for registration ... and not only that, a cell phone with a plan to send Japanese or international SMS.
At least, that is how far I got until I hit a wall.

I had sent an email almost a month ago to ask if a Japanese cell phone would have been necessary for buying tickets.
Apparently, I had not been too specific / not specific enough in my inquiry ...
