Cherry MX Blues or Browns?
« on: Sun, 07 November 2010, 21:33:30 »
Like i said in my last post, i am mostly getting this keyboard for typing and playing Starcraft 2.

ok, so i have read the wiki about switches and looked at some of the keyboards and I'm sorry to say but i still have some questions for you anyone looking at this thread. Since i cannot seem to find a backlit keyboard with brown switches i will get one with blue switches. I am worried that it might be too loud and was wondering how easy is it to sell it on the classifieds section of Geekhack?  I may sell it for a nonlit brown switch if it is far too loud, but i would still prefer a backlit brown keyboard from anywhere  :P
If i like the Blues then i will keep them of course!

Lastly, if you have a good way of saying how loud a blue switch is let me know, i have no idea what LOUD means when talking about keyboard clicks. I have had a logitech for a long time and i haven't liked it since day 1, it feels too squishy and the keys seem a little too hard to press compared to my last keyboard. (i got with my win98 a loooong time ago)

there are audio clips here

http://geekhack.org/forumdisplay.php?f=36

If in doubt, I'd say get the browns.
Personally, the clicks aren't that much of annoyance for myself,
but other people close by will definitely notice it.

FILCOs also have this metal plate in which the switches are mounted on.
Even the brown switches are much noisier than dome switches (but still way quieter than blues) because the key makes a big clank sound when you bottom the key and it hits the metal plate.

the back light is a big to me and i really want a backlit keyboard, but those seem to not exist with brown switches, why is that?  If they do can anyone give me a link to a backlit keyboard with Cherry MX Brown switches?

EDIT:  the Blues sound very loud in the clip   :P   maybe not too loud for me, but others might be bothered.  Browns also are easier to press which i like a lot, since I've been using a Logitech G110 for a little while i am sure that both keyboard switch types will be a huge relief to my fingers, i am just partial to Browns just from reading about both types of switches.

And thanks again for people putting up with my noobishness.   I did read the wiki though   :)

probably because most typist can remember the key locations just from muscle memory.

maybe get a Deck keyboard as someone suggested in that other thread?
Browns feel a tad too light weight for me and prone to accidental presses. As clears are similar to brows except have 55nC instead of 45nC, maybe it is even better. I wish FILCO made one with clears too.

i just like the backlight because i take my hands off the keyboard a LOT and it makes it easier to get my pointers on f and j.  If i didnt have the whole keyboard down with muscle memory then i wouldn't consider buying a fancy mechanical one   :)  plus the backlight just looks awesome!   :D

just spend 1s looking in the dark for the f/j nubs. Basically what i do in the dark (and everyday actually, since my 2nd monitor covers up my keyboard).

it would be neat if the fronts of the f and j keys had light coming through them, and it might be an easy mod...

much easier than modifying the tops of the keys

Filco Zero (Fukka) AEKII sliders and keycaps * Filco Tenkeyless MX brown * IBM F/AT parts: modding
Model F Mod Log * Open Source Generic keyboard controller

Working in dark is against ergonomy, and a good way to screw your eyes. The brightness of the monitor should be comparable to the brightness of the environment.
Besides, a grue could eat you in the dark.
