How does a Model M Space Saver feel lke?
« on: Fri, 12 November 2010, 12:09:52 »
Yes I am insane yes I am!

But I wanted to know how does a Space Saver feel like?

Like a 1391401? like a 42H1292? or like a UNICOMP?

I know early M's feel stiffer than the new ones but in general how do Space Savers feel like?

Can someone add a sound clip?

It feels like a 1391401 mostly...

It's a very heavy, dense keyboard.

focking awesome...

It feels sorta like a 401.  I have owned 10+ Model M's and about 7 Space Saving keyboards.  Some NIB.  ALL of them were different from each other.  There didn't seem to be a rhyme or reason why some sounded different from each other (based on year, usage, model, etc)

Very true.  I have 7 currently and they're all a bit different, but mostly like a 1401...

Here's a video review I found on youtube

You're not going to find any effective, measurable difference over the internet.  Only in person.  Remember, it's just a shorter Model M with a different controller.  Because of it's shorter length, it may seem more tight or less flexy in some respects but honestly, there really isn't any significant difference between a Space Saving Model M and a full size Model M of the same era if they're in the same condition.  I have full size Model M's that are every bit as solid, tight and special as space saving Model M's are.

The biggest difference is being able to move your mouse in closer and position the keyboard differently on your desk.

I think they just feel pingier.. very pingy in fact.

Need to do the ripster/sandy bolt-nut mod soon! Once my exams are over!

Slightly off-topic:
I'm kinda embarrassed to admit this but I will open up - I love listening to ripster's sound clips of keyboards.. and this is one of 'em. One of the main driving forces to motivate myself to mod it to sound less pingy..

They should feel like whatever the equivalent fullsize at the time of the manufacture feels like.

I would agree with the comments that the space saver keys feel springier. Maybe it's just that the full size model m I had was more wore in.

I am reporting the the board arrived in wonderful condition!!

AND MIKE... This thing is MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNTTTTTTTT as ****

Also I got my order from UNICOMP :) The black SDL Cable is very nice should go well with my Square Lable Customizer as for the keys I ordered... :( I was very dissaponted wth the quality of the unicomp keys. I ordered a Print Screen/Scroll Lock/Pause/Insert/Home/Delete/End/Pg Up/Pg Down they look very cheaply made but then again at .25 a key its expected

Yah I don't think that keyboard has seen much action, due to the condition and the springs feel pretty stiff.

There is just something about the IBM mini that's appealing.

This post is being written in my new MINI!! Yay!!

She feels great! a close rival to my 1985 board, its funny how to see myself reaching for the numpad now when I said 1985, but its all, a matter of adjustment.

Great condition just maybe some Vintage 1987 dust bunnies and only 4 rivets missing

Time to post over at the space saver club thread now! :) thanks Mike!

I am amazed I did not go tenkeyless sooner!

You will get used to the numpad thing pretty quick.  I have a couple filco browns that I am now wishing were tenkeyless.

Anyway, glad to spread the spacesaver love and welcome to the club!

I could never get used to not having a numpad, but I work in retail, so it makes sense.  I could probably do without at home.
