Mechanical "Jangbi" Keyboard?
« on: Fri, 03 December 2010, 09:38:09 »
I have recently been looking into switching to a mechanical keyboard. this site has been great for information about all sorts of information related to making that transition, but I have become accustomed to using a "Jangbi" style as seen here

This is typically accomplished by buying 2 boards 1 black and 1 white and simply popping keys to get the desired alternating colors. This is also somewhat necessary because as a gamer I have grown accustomed to using my peripheral vision to check the position of my hand on the keyboard itself.

Now because of the price I am trying to avoid buying 2 keyboards simply for an extra set of keycaps. I have however been unable to find a board where I can just buy a replacement set of keycaps in white or black and get the board itself in the opposing color.

Any ideas?

Mind you, I think MarineKing/Boxer/Foxer uses the DT-35, not a mechanical keyboard.

Yeah, that is the DT35 that is used by a lot of Brood War pros (because it's cheap). I believe MarineKing is using that, but am not completely sure. I remember someone mentioning it at Teamliquid because of the black/white layout.

Today I learned what Jangbi style is.

Jangbi is a Brood War (StarCraft 1) ProGamer:

i guess your right, found this quote
"This keyboard, in my opinion, is one of the best keyboards.
However, this keyboard is not fit for FPS (Counterstrike, or other first person shooters) because this keyboard does not support 3 keys. It's only 2 keys. I actually own like 3 of these, and I have been using this.. so yea.

However, this keyboard is sold only at 15 dollars or below in Korea.
Just to let you know those of you who might get ripped off. "

these kids game for thousands of dollars (or whatever the hell korean yen is) and they purposefully buy a cheap board?

It's super cheap in korea, but not so cheap outside of it. They buy this board because a) it works, b) you don't need fancy stuff for brood wars, and c) you can stock like hundreds of them for your players to use - it's easy to replace a cheap keyboard when you have a lot of players in training that all hit 200+ apm.

Only recently have there been more mechanical keyboards used in SC, specifically in SC2 where individual players would buy the keyboards for themselves.

Dunno bout the pcbangs, but the teams themselves buy these keyboards. In Brood War, you don't really buy the stuff for yourself. The teams supply everything. Certainly some of the more successful players have the money to buy for themselves, but a lot of the lower tier players will just accept the DT35s that the teams stock.

Also, the vast majority of StarCraft progamers don't make a whole lot of money. A few stars at the top wouldn't blink at any price for a keyboard (Bisu and his Ferrari lol), but for most of them, $100 is a big chunk out of their pay.
