Did anybody else see this keyboard go on eBay?  Didn't think it'd sell for so high.... most impressive!  I've met the seller and he's a fellow GeekHacker.

Great auction for a great keyboard!

I've wondered why Dolch boards in this layout haven't exploded through the roof for some time, especially with the PAC60 since you don't need to do any cable mods to it.

Congrats to the seller and winner.

Only three bids. The two highest are very much higher than the first and happened within the last minute.
I suppose that all three tried to use the strategy of bidding really high as to prevent bids of small increments ever outbidding them .. but that works only if you are the only bidder doing it. Haha!

(this typed on a G80-18xx which I got for a lot less)

Kishy makes a decent point, especially to those of you who **** on ebay finds that you're currently bidding on.  This kind of nonsense only causes everyone to overpay for this kind of gear.

I spent a few months watching Dolch units trying to get my hands on one that was in good working order because I wanted the COMPUTER too, and keyboard poachers were driving up the prices to silly levels for a barebones 486 system.  I finally got my hands on one for a reasonable price in working order with the keyboard, but these units are useless as portable machines without the snap-on keyboard.

Oh, and for the record, the build quality of the Dolch keyboards is a joke.  The rest of the system is rock solid, but those keyboards, while an interesting layout with pretty keycaps, are so easily marred, cracked and scuffed it's not pretty.  Soft plastic I guess, but even Cherry brand boards are tougher than these things.  If you're after a high quality Cherry board, the Dolch, while great eye candy, ain't it.

On top of that, most of the units out there require hacking up a phone cable to make a usable connector for AT / PS/2.

For  the key cap harvesters, they don't fit snugly on more recent Cherry boards (MX-11900), falling off pretty frequently under normal typing conditions.  I can make a youtube video illustrating all of these facts for anyone that's considering buying one for such purposes.

Cool layout, nice key caps, funky and retro, but still only a C+ to B- board in the best of situations.

I got it.
I'm sorry, but I had done exactly that back when the news first got out. I had asked the seller if he could ship me just the keyboard. He agreed to do that and probably trashed the rest. He had already thrown away the harddrive, and with it, the bundled software, so I thought that it wasn't useful any more.

Oqsy, I have a different opinion of Dolch keyboards based on the PAC60 Dolch which may be different construction than 61-64.  I don't know.

I have only bought PAC60 keyboards because I wanted the detachable cable/onboard PS2 like Northgates have.

Their construction is good but they were used on a heavy portable system which means many of them saw more banging around than your average keyboard sitting on a desktop.  That's the cause of most of the damage and battle scars you see in my opinion.

I happily paid Ricercar a good aftermarket price for my first Dolch keyboard, then acquired a couple for backups.  One is attached to a complete PC.

Dolch keyboards are also PCB mounted like the G80-1800 in the auction which I love and in shorter keyboards you don't get the flex you see in full sized PCB mounted keyboards.  Thick vintage doubleshots and MX switches on short PCB's is awesome.

The only other keyboard I know of in a compact form factor with PCB mounted MX switches are the Deskos aka "Elbowglue SPOS" and the MX SPOS aka "Ricercar SPOS"

Kishy, heres a Complete Dolch Pac64 system for $75 BIN.  That is a steal for the keyboard alone and somewhere on GH there's a graphic showing the pinout to help in making the cable.

didja: Nope, most of the battle scars were put on the keyboard since I've owned it, and it hasn't left my office since I bought it.  I'm willing to believe that the earlier models were heftier, as most things appear to be that way.

The weight of the board was also disappointing, but I suppose a metal plate on a "luggable" pc would have been counterproductive.  I guess my point is that the keyboard isn't as tough or hefty as I've come to expect from my gear.  My two main boards are currently a Northgate and a 42H Model M, so the Dolch feels dinky and flimsy in comparison, and slides all over my desk when I type.  The computer case, on the other hand, is pretty solid with metal frame and lots of support / braces inside.  Maybe they could have shaved a BIT of that and put more into the keyboard :P  Anyway, good luck to all seeking Dolch gear, but keep in mind that there are people who are seeking the entire units for their original purpose, luggable PCs, and stripping the keyboard away is like castrating them.  Don't cut your Dolch's nuts off!

Say no more :)

VERY FEW keyboards can even be compared to the build quality and construction of Northgates or early IBM's. (see my sig)

heh, I usually ignore signatures.  Nothing personal, they're just part of that filter in my brain like advertisements on web sites, or commercials on TV or radio.  They never even cross my mind.

edit: weird coincidence... after typing this message, I looked down at my MX-11900 with the dolch key caps, and the ` and 3 keys had fallen off.  Dolch keycaps are nice as long as they stay on the Dolch keyboard :P

Prior to Double-shots were readily available, people bought the Dolch because of the key caps + Blues, now that there's "Double shot replacements" are available, I surmise this pastime of buying a whole system just for the keyboard will subside. What you'll usually get is a haggard MX Blue keyboard.
Often outspoken, please forgive any cause for offense.
Thank you all in GH for reading.
