I ate a bug today.
« on: Tue, 28 December 2010, 23:49:01 »
I made chili and it must've flown in at some point.

While I was enjoying my meal there was a weird crunch followed by a terrible taste. Then I pulled out the squished carapace from my mouth.

I calmly put it on my plate, got up, and threw the rest in the garbage.

One of these guys, I believe they are stink bugs. He tasted terrible.

I've eaten quite a few various critters.  Many people in Northern Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, etc. are quite fond of them.  You often see street vendors selling them cooked up piping hot.  Yummy!!!

My brother almost swallowed a bee once... Which would have been bad, cause he is alergic to bees.  I myself have probobly inhaled a few gnats in my lifetime... And some statistics show that the average person eats like 4 spiders a year in their sleep... Not sure how accurate that is, but lets hope it is one of the 45% of all statistics that are made up...

My old intellistation actually sucks up bugs.
So if there are any spiders wanting to crawl into my mouth during sleep, my intellistation will suck them up before that happens. IBM has solutions.

I had a cat once that ate a bee... it was a fat cat that would eat anything.

There's a lot of bugs in certain cereals, [those] particular cereals I no longer eat. I'm always looking at my food... that's why I can't eat certain things.

Have you ever taken one of these after it's been on your lamp for a while?

Every time I do that, there's usually a good number of dead bugs lying on there. Unlike incandescents, they actually provide a landing surface, and thus bugs get trapped and die. Same with overhead lamps that use glass covers.

I had a wasp once upon a time on my plate. It came with fried onions on top of a steak. In a french restaurant I had snails on my table and some days ago a piece of a goose!

Ugly, eh?

I know bugs in person only from computer programs and from behind some restaurants ...

That reminds me of a gnat flying up my nose during a bike ride once a loooong time ago. It settled itself deep inside my left nostril... The stench! Terrible! Blowing my nose didn't help at all, I kept smelling that gnat for hours and hours....

This does officially count as a digested gnat since I never recovered it... ;-)

Awesome talk :D

Food for thought indeed. ;)

However, the one thing he doesn't address which is, I think, more problematic than overcoming mindset as far as eating insects goes, is the fact that societal change, at least at the administrative level (before it gets to the point of torches and pitchforks in the streets), is not motivated by good sense or even to the benefit or well being of people in general.  It is motivated to ensure the comfort of the wealthy and influential and therefore the food industries, and actually any number of related corporations, care more about profit than sustainability for the entire population.  To have a paradigm shift in what we are accustomed to consuming also means a major reorganization of what many are accustomed to profiting from, which then involves opening a whole new can of worms... (no pun intended)

When I read this thread, I laughed so hard that I choked on my tea.

I've inhaled and eaten many bugs (unintentionally, of course).

I used to go jogging in the woods every day. One day there were huge clouds of gnats and mosquitoes everywhere (must have been mating season or something). I ate at least 17 bugs that day. (I counted - and stopped to choke each time)

I held my breath as I ran to escape the forest, but there's only so long you can keep that up before you die from lack of oxygen.

No, they're not from Asia. They're found natively around the world. You kill them? They're completely harmless, innocent bugs.

Spiders are weird, I think they're the only ones that use hydraulics to move their legs.

I like ants the best, they're really interesting and live at least 3 years. They're also highly intelligent, cooperative, curious, and humorous to observe.
Sometimes I feed them different foods to test their reaction. I've always been fascinated with their mandibles: although when you get older, you can't see things as close up anymore.

I saw one of these in my kitchen once.  I was freaked out by it.  It looked poisonous and deadly.

My mom came in and killed it.  She's really tough, she was raised on a farm. lol

I read up on them on wikipedia.  They're a kind of centipede I guess. I read that yeah it is an insect predator and we should have let it live.
