Do all Cherry keyboards with the "MX" prefix have MX switches?
« on: Sat, 01 January 2011, 23:32:34 »
Is it safe to assume that if a keyboard is a Cherry keyboard and has a model number starting with the prefix "MX" that it has MX keyswitches?

The keyboard in queston is a Cherry MX-1950. Fully programmable POS keyboard. Here's a picture...

| Deck Legend Fire (MX Blacks) | KBC Poker X (MX Reds) | Cherry G80-11900LTMUS (MX Clears) |  Cherry G80-11900HRMUS (MX "Ghetto Reds")
| IBM Model M 1391401 (BS) | Goldtouch GTC-0033 Keypad (MX Browns) |

As far as I know, your assumption is correct. The G81s all seem to have MY prefixes, and the G80s tend to have MX prefixes. These are the only Cherry boards I am familiar with, offhand.

Isn't that what is called a ricercar spos keyboard?

I believe the ricercar POS boards are G86 boards with a shared G80 part number...

Board in the OP is indeed Cherry MX. Most likely black. I think ones with Blue MX exist, but are probably more limited.

Thanks. I figured black as well if it did indeed have MX switches. I found one for $20 and am trying to figure out if it is worth it.

Other question is...how hard is it to find the replaceable clear covers for the relegendable keys?

Well, Cherry used to provide them free of charge if you kindly asked... but if you are asking for a hundred of them that might be another story.

Haha yeah...that looks like it needs 67 single size covers, 9 double size, and 2 quad size. It's starting to look like this deal is worse and worse every second.

Well, assuming I get the function kit replacement in the group buy, I can provide 41 single size covers, for just the cost of postage. I certainly will have no use for them.

That would be awesome...still not sure what I would use the board for???

Programmable boards make great gaming dedicated boards, depending on how they are programmed. Not sure if you're a gamer, but...

Also, at that price, it's worth it for just the switches.

I am a gamer, but have my Deck Legend in the mail for that exact use...plus for gaming I want more than 2KRO which is what I imagine the MX1950 has like my MX11900.

Also...what sucks about "at that price, it's worth it for just the switches" is that I currently have these WYSE terminal boards for parts in the mail and will have 208 spare MX Black switches later this week. So there is no reason to get another board for black switches. :(

Those are valid points, yes. But, let me know if you want the cover things. They shouldn't be expensive at all to send you.

Did some more research.

They exist in two versions: MX Black and MX Brown. If its brown its a good switch donor for sure.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I think I'm going to take a day or two to think about it.

This makes it tempting just to see. I've been wanting to try out a brown board lately, but the Compaq MX11800's have been going for $50+ lately on ebay.

I wonder what the resale value of this board would be around here if it was fully functional with browns vs. blacks?

YGPM. I'd love to trade you a Cherry brown-switched G80-6955 (G80-82xx clone) or pay the $20 + shipping for that 1950 board.

Sent you a return PM.

Looks like ricercar will be picking up this board instead. I think I'm just going to mess with the ones I have for right now.
