Will Ducky have an "Otaku" like Filco?
« on: Tue, 04 January 2011, 20:44:35 »
Just wondering, they seem to be nearly the same in terms of ups and downs to me.  Just a few differences and i was thinking about trying out a blank keyboard.   :)

i think that they call them Otaku's because they are made for people who are "obsessed" with fancy keyboards or something like that since not many people own a keyboard that you cannot see any of the letters.  Just my opinion though, i dont think anyone on here is really obsessed with keyboards, we all just enjoy using them!

Well there is a BIG problem with Otaku Filcos.  They are almost impossible to get.

This... :( I got lucky and picked up a used black one, but I've been searching for a white one for a while.

I put double shots on my Otaku Filco and destroyed most of the keycaps in experiments involving acetone and other solvents. By now I much prefer the Cherry Corp blank keys, sadly they are not any easier to get.

I got my Otaku Ducky 9008 in the mail yesterday, I like it alot so far.  They also sell just the keycaps at the ebay site.

Put some pictures up here http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?t=13970

Are they? Keyboardco will sell you one any time you ask, I believe. I guess you meant they are almost impossible to get from US dealers.

One of the keyboardco guys told me they actually make blank keyboards by switching the keycaps themselves, so that might mean you get different keycaps from what you might expect. IIRC blanks that come on the otaku boards are  coated, while blanks sold separately are non-coated (or the other way round, you get the idea). Still, blanks for a 5-pound surcharge are fine by me - so much so that I bought one and may buy another.
It's a little different for me - I need Hungarian layout so I don't get blanks for the looks. I actually put stickers on mine so I can find numbers and symbols easier, so it's not blank anymore.
