HHKB or stay dual RF ?
« on: Sun, 09 January 2011, 12:55:28 »
Hello everybody,

I am French, be indulgent with my english please.

I was wondering if it was a good experience to switch from a RF all55g to a HHKB and to keep my RF multiweighted version.

The all 55g is quiet heavy when you are coming from a multi weighted one.
I switch every holiday to one from another and it's sometimes hard with the 55G one.
I mean, it's more fun than the multi weighted one but it gives you more fatigue.

I would say go for it, so long as you can live with the HHKB layout, because it's so unique. Also bear in mind that the HHKB doesn't have quite as nice build quality as a Realforce.

Your English is fine =)
Since you're French, may I be indulgent with your cheese? (I like it a lot) :D

keep the 55g. I went backwards from where you are planning to go. (Went from HHKB and 55g to selling my HHKB and getting a variable weight)

I feel I've made the right decision.

The multiweighted one is simply perfect. You can't go wrong.
What made you choose the 55g over the HHKB ?

The higher build quality of the Realforce caught my eye more than the layout of the HHKB, and I wanted a same-weighted keyboard, which made me buy the 55g and HHKB before trying the variable weighted. The all 55g seems a little heavy at first (especially the spacebar), but after a while you'll get used to it and enjoy it's unique key feel. I was really disappointed in the feel of the HHKB.

But if you're wanting a nice portable keyboard that's quiet enough to use in a crowded environment, you can't go wrong with the HHKB.

IF you can afford it then I recommend you just bite the bullet and try it.  If you don't like it then just resell it.  I read many comments that led me to be intrigued by the realforce boards, so I got one and found the spacebar to be too heavy for me (55g).  The build quality was superb though.
My point is, it's a process and at least now I've satisfied some of my curiosity.  Going forward I'd like to try an all-30G RF someday.

I can afford one but i can't accept spending 350 dollars more (with customs) for another Topre switch board and keep the two RF.
The deal was to sell one of my RF but they are both extremely good.
Even the all 55g which need some adaptation after coming from a light switch keyboard.
Plus they are premium/collector because they are no longer sold on US/European market. The HHKB you can buy it from several sources.

If you like the feel of the RFs you have, you might be a little disappointed in the HHKB.  The layout is tremendous, though, and once you get used to it, it's really hard to go back.  Personally, if you have two RFs, I would skip the HHKB unless you are really in need of a portable keyboard.

@isp

If you pull the spacebar cap, there is a large spring in the middle where the switch is.  If you take out the spring, the spacebar will be a lot lighter.  It won't be as solid-feeling, but it will work just fine.

Hello everybody, i'm french too, and thanks to geekhack forum spent my first 260 euros for a keyboard (from thekeyboardco from uk) something i would have never thought possible one month ago ;-)
It's a Topre Realforce 103 black, really fantastic, switching from an apple chicklet and a typematrix bépo.

According to the touch feeling and the buiild quality i'm looking for an HHKB, smaller and blank white to paste some stickers from beaujoie.

Is the quality really different for such a pricey keyboard ?

By the way, The HHKB will never be sold from europe due to the ROHS directive/accreditation (Fujitsu doesn't want to).
Realforce 105 FR, HHKB Pro 2 black, 1 Raptor K1 Black Cherry and 1 Raptor K1 Red Cherry , Compag MX 11800  tBrown Cherry, G80-3000 Clear Cherry , G80-1000 Blue Cherry / Ghetto red, Lexmark 1992 SSK Buckling spring, Unicomp 2011 Customizer 102 Buckling spring
and a few rubber dome/scissors keyboards from Apple/Logitech
