How's it been? My HHKB Pro II at work has seen 15 months of 5 days a week work as a web developers peripheral of choice. Still chugging along just fine :) (And white hides shiny textureless keytops). I figured I would check up on here, maybe get a few questions about the community, I hardly have time anymore :(

1. Is Ripster still crazy?

2. Where's my Guruboard! =P

3. What happened to EliteKeyboards, no longer in vendor subforums?

4. Completely hypothetical question: if you could have a new theme to the GH forums, would it be light or dark?

Guruboard may still be coming as a kit, but I haven't been following it too closely.
But, those details are probably best gotten from the source.

Welcome back, if only for a short while. We have missed you.

Calling Ripster crazy isn't saying much.

Guruboard was canceled due to lopo not being sure if it would sell at perhaps something that exceeded expected price; a DIY kit version is in the works (check the superthread reading backwards perhaps)

Re: site theme, I'd love a true lighter theme (instead of the hybrid light on dark for relevant portions), but using the quasi-official orange being associated with geekhack, and using moderate to high contrast with text and whatnot. Something I could also use in the dark given software-based brightness and gamma reduction resulting in a lower contrast ratio on my crappy screens.

Agreed, what amateur put this piece of sh...HEY.

Sucks about the guruboard :( Hopefully the DIY isn't too involved, I haven't soldered in a while.

It's also interesting to see you guys liking a few elements from the current template. iMav was also stating that having something similar would be nice. A dark layout would be great for your eyes in a dark room, but there's some benefits to light themes as well, as they're more traditional, and easier to read (or so I've heard...), either way it'd be wise to accomodate both, similar to how it's done now.

So is the orange iconic enough to be used again? If people have grown to like the current design, I might just add some polish to it, and pull things together, but generally leave it as is. I'm opening a CF asking a question like that, but I've got tough skin, and no one better to listen to than the people who use the forums often.

Guys, definitely take the time to give feedback to o2dazone about the current themes.  He's the official GH skinner.  ;)

vB 4.x will require new templates...thoughts are maybe recreate the dark skin close to as is and perhaps put some more work into the light skin.  Regardless, this is a great time to provide feedback and ideas.

like the default theme as is, please keep it (minor tweaks would be OK). But,

I feel like the light skin is just tacked on. It's not really "Light", so much as it is a "high contrast". It also doesnt follow the same colour scheme, which (to me) breaks the sites fluidity. I feel like the orange is very symbolic of GH (as evidenced by iMav's sig logo thingy) and I would love to see a true light theme designed with the same core colour set, just utilizing lighter neutrals. If it were easy on the eyes, I would switch.

I'd say technically the light theme does a good job. Easy on the eyes, good contrast, doesn't mess with my font size where it counts (wiki excepted). Overall good readability. (I always find inverse text harder to read, whether on screen or on a keyboard.)

It obviously doesn't follow the whole orange thing though, rather looking like an adapted default VBulletin theme... functional, but a tad generic. If it can be ported from "blue" to "orange" without losing any of the above (or even improving ergonomics), I guess I wouldn't mind.

Good to know how you guys feel about the orange. I'll def play around with making a light and dark skin incorporating the orange. They'll probably be similar in style and accent, and just have it "on dark backgrounds" and "on light backgrounds". It seems as though we can accomodate both, and you guys can just choose

Also sorry about not making that super apparent, wasn't sure if iMav wanted me to leak the redesign or not haha. I did anyways, damn The Man.

Also I just saw the KBC 40....omg, where can I get one?

What up, O2!?  I like the overall color scheme of the dark theme as it is.  It's very easy on the eyes.  By far, GH, is the nicest forum that view regularly.

As long as there's a dark medium-to-low contrast theme, like the current standard one, I'm happy.

What? They have whole forums about the advantages of keycaps made of POM (polyoxymethylene) plastic as opposed to ABS plastic?

Hi o2dazone,

I don't know if this helps but I just wanted to add my thoughts on the current "look" of geekhack.

I do not use the "light", I kept trying it but it strains my eyes and seems too cluttered/busy for me.

I love and really appreciate the the "dark" theme, I think it looks smart, clean, interesting, and looks great with the gh orange. Not to mention much easier on my eyes and I think it pulls pictures, references, avatars, all images together without it looking like a cut and past scrapbook. It makes for a nice canvas so to speak.

I would be sad to see it go, I am obviously quite fond of it and I think it's has given gh a strong visual identity.

I hope that was of some use.

=)

If you find the GH light theme to be a strain on the eyes, either you've still got a CRT there or your monitor is plenty bright (calibrated at 140 cd/mē plus low ambient light, maybe?).
Mine is set up to be just as bright as necessary for decent contrast, so even solid white never gets blinding. (You can pretty much only pull this off with a monitor that varies actual backlight brightness.) Could use automatic backlight brightness adjustment like upscale Eizos and NECs have.

Anyway, the dark theme probably is the most popular option here, so it definitely isn't going to go away (in fact nobody claimed anything like that).

Haahaa, no-no I don't use a CRTs anymore, I use only IPS panels now (21UX, CG220, U2410)
calibrated for print and view, adjusted for highlight retention and observance.
I am a professional photographer and illustrator (finally and completely on my own screens, hooray).

I don't experience blinding whiteness on the monitor at anytime either, I just don't happen to fancy darker text on a light background, especially on this forum as it feels cluttered, confusing, and less cohesive when compared to the dark theme. I can understand why some like it, but I find it unpleasant at times.

I realize no one mentioned specifically ditching the dark theme, I just wanted to make it crystal that I really like it and shame on anyone who would want to make me sad. haahaa =P
