How old are mech KB users?
« on: Fri, 14 January 2011, 13:10:58 »
I had some family over the other day, and was showing off my new 30" monitor to my dad an brother.  My brother couldn't help but ask "what's up with your keyboard?" (RF 86u).  I began to explain to him the advantages of the feel, durability, built quality etc.  My dad then chimed in and said "it uses springs instead of a flat pad huh?" while nodding his head in approval. I was shocked!  My dad is not the most techy guy in the world (I buy all his electronics for him from cordless phones to his LED LCD tv) unless he impulse buys something from QVC or something (I usually scold him for doing so because you can usually find better for cheaper than what QVC offers). But he knew about mechanical keyboards, granted a rudimentary level of understanding but understood none the less. Meanwhile my brother who is 28 stood with a blank stare bedaffelded.

I was wondering if the beauty of mech KB has totally skipped a few generations since model M's are no longer mass produced. I was curious how old are you other geekhackers?  I understand these aren't toys and expect a majority of mature adults here but was curious are most if us 30+ 40+ 50+ like my dad or what.

I will start. I am 26 and only really became exposed to mech keyboards less than about two years ago. Granted I remember using BS keyboards back when I was in grade school but has no idea what was what. I only bought my first mech about 2 months ago and truly live it.

Am I on the young end of the spectrum of mech kb users?  Just curious after having that encounter with my dad and brother.

I'm 28 and I have yet to convert anyone, but like you I explained it to my dad and he was interested. As a writer and typist of many years though, I'm not surprised. He loves his Macbook Pro scissor switch. Nice keyboard.

Most folks: "It's just a keyboard".

GeekHackers: "Keyboards are SERIOUS business!"

25, but I haven't actually bought a mechanical keyboard yet. My last experience with them was the Apple Extended Keyboard for typing classes. Still my favorite keyboard ever to date. That being said, considering that there are only two generations after mine, I don't think it's skipped any.

It's probable that it did skip a generation.   I'm 37.  My exposure to mechanical keyboards was with the original pc at in high school, and after going through cheap logitech/rubber domes month after month in my 20s, since I do a lot of typing I remembered how great the old pcat keyboard felt.   I also realized I could probably find one on ebay which I did and that began my re interest in mechanicals, which eventually led me to find the minitouch and this board.  During the 80's the pcat mechanical keyboards were exceptionally expensive to own, if you happened to be able to track one down.  In the 90's, they were viewed as trash, and only during the later 90's and early 2000's when ebay came about would you even be able to find one even if you knew what you were looking for.

The alps and cherry boards didn't receive much if any advertising in general media so few knew their advantages or how they felt.  It was only till ebay made some models affordable that you could become exposed to them.  I found my first siig minitouch for $25 on ebay just by typing in compact mechanical keyboard.  It was the only real mechanical compact that came up.  This was about 2 years ago now.

It took a lot of proactive research on my part to search out and find exactly what I wanted. Most people don't have a reason or probably even an idea of how to go about it, if they even have had the exposure to know that mechanicals are longer lasting, infinitely repairable, and feel 100 times better than cheap rubber domes.

He understood there was a spring loaded under each key vs the typical pad (rubber dome). That was a deeper understanding of mech kb than my 28 yr old brother. Like I said; rutementery understanding, but that is essentially what defines a mech.

As someone who used typewriters for years (including electric and otherwise) my Dad understands the importance of tactility in typing very much and love the whole 'mechanical keyboard' concept. I toyed with the idea of giving him a Realforce as a gift but he loves his MBP keyboard so much I don't want to try to force a switch :D

I'm 30 (yay, I'm in the 21-30 group)! I've been using mechanical keyboards since 1988. At home we had an IBM Model M, then a Focus 2001, then a Dell AT101. In grade/middle/high school we had Model Ms until the last few years. In college I used the computer lab filled with SGIs, which mostly had the Granite keyboards.

I've had a recent dalliance with scissor keys, though.

22. Started looking into keyboards when I realized I only used my left hand to type (2007).
Frogboard looked kinda neat, as well as the Maltron (but couldn't swallow the price at the time for something I'd have to buy on faith).
A few months later, discover Unicomp, buy a board from them. Beer destroys it, order a Cherry board. Later, ordered another Unicomp spacesaver for work.
Discover GeekHack while researching keyboard layouts in 2009, wallet has hated me ever since.

Let's start easy.  You know how to get FM and AM radio stations?

Child's play :)

My definition of "tuning" a car is based solely around the engine management systems. Adjusting fuel and ignition maps, etc etc. Or if you prefer older cars...it's tuning carburetors and distributors.

I guess I'm the old geezer around here.  Let's just say that I'm quite a bit older than the next oldest who's posted in this thread (iMav at 40).  When I first got into computers, the keyboards were quite mechanical, as in card punches.  You'd typically punch up a bunch of cards and submit them for batch processing, then come back later and get your printout of the result.  Needless to say I was thrilled when I built my first computer (an S-100 bus system) which I had all to myself.  I initially had to code in machine language and toggle in the code via the front panel, but still thought it was great.  Soon after built a terminal which connected to the system via an RS232 port and was able to have an interactive system where I typed on a keyboard and saw the results on the screen.  While modern computers are great, I do often miss those old days.

Yeah, back in the old days a "computer nerd" was something special and everyone was thankful to be able to use your services.  These days they're a dime a dozen.  Initially the PC technology was driven mostly by businesses needing bigger and powerful computers.  These days it seems to be driven by gamers.  I used to always want the latest and fastest of everything.  These days the technology has far surpassed my needs and I don't really care if I'm running hardware that's a couple years old or not.  I guess if I was into gaming though, I'd still be chasing acquiring the latest hardware.

I'm 28. Turn 29 in about a month.

For me, I've always known about mechanicals. Even used them fairly frequently in school (CS grad student), but I never felt the need to get one, because they aren't the correct layout, and they are a bit pricier than the sun keyboards I'd been using.

Then I started wearing them out on average of every 6 months or so, found the HHKB, and discovered I can mod my Model M to be the right layout, and now I'm happy. I even bought a custom layout Unicomp, which is a joy to type on.

I'm 41.  I remember using my father's BS IBM keyboards when they were new, but never paid much attention to them.  The first keyboard I really appreciated was my Omnikey I got in college.  These forums have motivated me to dig it back out of the closet, but now I'm itching to find something better.

Same situation here, ended up giving my dad a g80-3000 with Blues and he loves the sound and feel, reminds him of his typewriter...^^.

I'm 24 by the way.

I am 27. I don't ever recall ever having used or heard of a mechanical keyboard, even in school. I am sure I must have had exposure to an Apple Extended Keyboard II at some point, but I don't remember what it felt like. I personally came to know about mechanical keyboards after doing a search on YouTube on videos related to how to improve typing accuracy. A lot of the typists who had high accuracy on typing tests there recommended mechanical keyboards. So I decided I'd try one.
Keyboards currently in my possession:
Filco Majestouch Cherry MX Brown 104 key, Unicomp Spacesaver 104, Rosewill RK-9000RE (Cherry MX Red), Leopold 660C Mini Capacitive keyboard, HHKB Type S, Logitech Illuminated Keyboard

Keypads:
Leopold 210TP Mechanical Keypad (Cherry MX Red), Leopold FC210TP/NB Mechanical Keypad (Cherry MX Brown)

Other Keyboards I have tried:
Filco Majestouch Cherry MX Red, Leopold  FC500RR/AB Linear Touch Cherry MX Red, Razer Blackwidow Ultimate, Razer Blackwidow Ultimate Stealth Edition, Realforce 103U/UB, Realforce 103U Black All 55g, Noppoo Choc Mini 84 Mechanical Cherry MX Black keyboard, Noppoo Choc Mini 84 Mechanical Cherry MX Red keyboard (white and black color versions), PLU G3000 NKRO keyboard (white w/ Cherry MX Red switches), Dell 101AT (black Alps switches), Mattias Mini Quiet Pro (modified white Alps switches), KBT Pure Pro, (2)Happy Hacking Keyboard Professional 2, Leopold FC210TP/CB Tactile Click Cherry MX Blue Tenkey pad

I'm 18 now and never used mechanical keyboard. Dad bought his first computer in the end of the 90`s. The first game that I played was pinball. I bought my own computer in 2007 if I remember right. First time I stumbled in mechanicals about two years ago, didn understand anything... Now looking to buy Filco Tenkeyless Blue, first mech and hopefully not the last one...

P.S. Sorry for typos, I`m not used to write in English and I blame the keyboard (see sig).

EDIT: I voted also...
Allmost: Filco Tenkeyless Blue
