I'm 25. I just got my first mechanical about 5 months ago. I love it! I got the filco 104 "Otaku" from EK. I knew of the existance of mechanical keyboards, and was aware of the paradigm shift in keyboard design in the last 15 years or so, but I had no idea that there was an entire community devoted to keyboards, or HID's for that matter.

A co-worker told me about geekhack after I asked him why his keyboard was so loud! He has a unicomp customizer. Long story short, I am looking forward to getting another board for work so I can CLICK-CLACK away with the unicomp. :smile:

40 here, and as stated elsewhere, I grew up with mechanicals and I really miss typing on them- as you all can attest, they're just 'better'. My first ( a Deck 82 purchased from ricercar ) isn't even here yet, and I'm thinking about another one I'd like to get already.

I'm 35.

I have been computing since 1988 when I got a Commodore 64 for Christmas (I had wished for an Amiga 500.. but anyway), and I have been working as a computer programmer since 1998. All this time, I have always been very picky about the feel of my keyboards, but I did not delve much into the technology inside them until this spring, when I stumbled upon this site. Since about 2002-2003, I have been collecting, building, tinkering and obsessing about the details with movie prop replicas, and that has worked up a certain mentality in me. I find that there is some of the same mentality here, only here it relates a little bit more to the tools that I use for work. If it weren't for those things, I don't think that I would have become as active here as I am today.

I learned to type on an Underwood metal typewriter at age 14. It must have weighed 13 lbs. However, I never used PC's until the year 2000. So even at an age of 55, I also missed the clicky-keyboard years. I've been using them now for less than two years. You can be too young OR too old.

I'm 22, Had my first IBM Model M, when i was 4 years old :-). Then i used Mech Boards until i was about 13. Since a few days i am back with a Model M, and my Filco should arrive soon, too!
I'll won't use a rubber dome board again

Do you actually use that? I've never met anyone who liked the PCjr keyboards. There were two varieties that I recall. The first one being absolutely horrible, then an updated one which was better but still nothing like the full-sized PC and AT boards.

The original one also used an IR interface if I remember correctly. Don't know if the updated version also still used the IR or not. If it is an IR interface, how did you interface it to your PC? Please don't tell us that you're using an IBM PCjr computer with it.

I once had a client who had a PCjr and dreaded having to visit him and type on that keyboard.

We sold the PCJr quite a while ago, and I don't recall ever using it myself. And hell no, I have no idea how I'd even connect it to my computer.

It has both the IR port and something else that looks like a phone line jack.

But just trying to type on it is terrible, there's easy way to move between rows because there's huge gaps. The space bar isn't that bad though, no flex!

And it's the keyboard IN my desk, not the keyboard ON my desk. I doubt I could even connect it anymore.

26. Never used a mechanical keyboard until about a year and a half ago. Fell in love immediately. Can't stand normal membrane pieces of garage anymore. Scissor switch is ok in a pinch though.

Well, well, well... 51 here. I guess I one of the old fartson GH! I used several mechanical keyboards in college. My first IBM was a model F, but as things progressed, I used the model M too. I actually started earlier than the model f too. We had these Daisy Wheel printer/keyboard terminal stations I actually took my first programming class on. I started writing code in COBOL on that one. Wow, that was a long time ago. Then as most of us, things happened and I got started using rubber dome keyboards like everyone, OK almost everyone. That's why when I started hearing about "clicky" keyboards, I immediately began looking for one. I'm so glad I got my model M.

I attended a community dinner a couple of months ago, and standing at the door where they were collecting the money, I looked up at the price list on the wall. It was at that moment that I had the sudden, and surprising realization that I qualified for the senior discount price, and by just a few days. Paying less for food, a right of passage for sure.

I'm still not sure how I feel about the whole thing. Ambivalent about the aging, but the fact that I can't do anything about it, and the fact it definitely saved me some money makes it a win I guess.

I can say I evolved from birth in a parallel path with computers, though I have no idea what type of keyboards I was using in the early days. Many were of an industrial variety, used in an industrial setting.

BTW- Speaking of old age, my wife gave me Mass Effect 2 for a Valentines day gift. She knows nothing of PC games, but she said she just googled games for people that liked Crysis Warhead. What a sweet lady! I had wondered several days earlier, why she had asked me out of the blue, what game I was playing.

I replaced the Vista on her laptop with Windows 7 in return.

30, but I often order off the pensioner menu (it's cheaper and sometimes less vast portions). I really dislike that Village Inn restructured their pensioner menu-- it used to offer meals with a half-slice of pie (itself like $2.50) for like 6.50.
