model m mini, unicomp spacesavers
« on: Fri, 21 January 2011, 06:24:20 »
I have a Model M mini, that I got as NIB. I did the nut/bolt mod on it as 21 of the plastic rivets were broken. Keyboard is in excellent shape and has been used on and off for about 3 months. Still have the box too.

I have two unicomp spacesavers. One black (ps/2) with linux layout and one white(usb) normal layout.

I also have a filco tenkeyless that originally had white Fukkas. I replaced them all with NIB black ALPS and then went ahead and replaced the click leaf and spring with those from the Fukka. I don't know, but think that kind of makes it a complicated white ALPS.

I need to post pics, I know, I know.

Let me know if there is any interest.

Oh yeah, after much thought, I am chucking it all and running with the HHKB.
The small form factor and default keylayout make a win for me.

Interested the Filco tenkeyless.  Is the Linux Unicomp Spacesaver 104 layout?  If it's actually a tenkeyless, I'd consider that, too.  Prices w/shipping? zip 95108.

Chicago rocks! I went there with a friend for a long weekend last March. I really liked the Ukrainian village area (around Damen and Division street). A lot of cool hipster hangouts (not that I'm a hipster - I'm a geekster).

You're not selling your ALPS but selling the Buckling Springs????  Even the Mini?
Show Image

I am selling the ALPS too. I  have way too much stuff and it really has to go.

The HHKB wins  because of the layout and small form factor. After many years here, obsessing over rainbows and unicorns and keyboards I think I can finally decide.

Pretty trippy too. I think I have had 6 minis at one time or another.

My picture taking skills are pretty bad but here goes.

The other pictures are pretty straight forward, in the interest of full disclosure I need to show this crack.
Yeah, it blows. Does it affect the functionality of the keyboard in any way that I can detect? No.

The filco tenkeyless with black alps bottoms and fukka spring/click leafs is at the office and I won't be there till sometime next week.
It is my most interesting 'board and while it is frankensteined works quite well. The keys do not have any friction or other weirdness that others have spoken of.
Note that the black ALPS were NIB, and the Fukka was NIB when I got it. It has seen a bit of use at work and the keys are shiny but the action is fine.

A buyer could replace the cracked barrel plate with a barrel plate from a full-size Model M. You can literally hack the numpad off with a hacksaw and it will fit the SSK. You just need to repeat most of the bolt-mod process on the donor barrel plate...

The SSK in front of me now made a full recovery from this surgery.

RSI prevention recipe:[/B] Kinesis Contoured, Colemak layout, touch typing, Contour Design Rollermouse,  Logitech TrackMan Wheel, Logitech m570 trackball, "workrave" break timer software, "awesome" window manager, tenkeyless boards, cherry browns, Wang 724 with "ghetto green" ALPS, standing desk and/or comfy adjustable chairs, stress reduction, computer time reduction.

Fun non-ergonomic things: bolt modded Model M Space Saving Keyboards with new springs, Kensington Expert Mouse v7, Unicomp Endurapro, Northgates

I suppose. But I honestly don't think it is needed. The keyboard feel is unaffected by this, of course that is only my opinion. I did want to point that out though. The rest of the mod went fine. I do think the nut/bolt mod makes a difference. It is a tighter feeling keyboard because of it (when I got it it had 21 missing rivits). I also think that tightening/loosening the bolts make a difference too.
Maybe you need to go down the rabbit hole to even care about something like that I don't know, but it made a difference for me.

What would be awesome is to replace the plastic barrel plate completely and replace it with one made of aluminium or some other cool metal. Not that anything like that is available but still, it would be sweet.

Oh yeah, the pricing.

I am asking 200 for the model m mini. Shipped within the US.
I will throw in the nut driver, and a bunch of spring/hammers.

I am asking 50 for the unicomps with shipping included within the US.

Let me know if you have any questions.

You're right, it looks not bad.  I didn't mean to imply that it needs a replacement.

I've seen two boards with cracked barrel plates that did need replacement. Those were much larger cracks directly under the typewriter keys; and they only made the board noisier.
