Jouney to my first mechanical keyboard..
« on: Mon, 24 January 2011, 20:10:00 »
It was during last November when I read an article about changing keyboards almost every 1-2 year happens in this current market. Normal people just couldn't care less about a $5 keyboard for their daily tasks and there were some 'crazy' people who spends $100 on a single keyboard. I asked myself, "Will I be one of the crazy ones?"...

One month later, I discovered a video on youtube that shows comparison between a mechanical and rubber dome keyboard. It was that moment, I understood one thing. These people are not crazy but those who doesn't understand the reasons of mechanical keyboard's existence are crazy.

Searching around on the net for a few hours, I was told that geekhack has a bunch of 'crazy' geeks around. I jumped to here straight away and I was poisoned by these funny names... Ducky, Filco, Topre, etc etc... Man, where have I been living for the last living years of mine? I have missed so much going on!

Anyhow, I took the poison and seriously, I found no remedy so far. Asked my friend in Japan to look for an Archiss/Leopold tenkeyless for me. She came back moment later and told me that she has ordered the model that I wanted for me!

The purpose of this thread is to note down the process of me waiting for my first mechanical keyboard. I will post photos or video of me unboxing the keyboard later. :)

Current status: Waiting for delivery..

25/1/2011 - The keyboard has left the japanese company. On the way to my friend's place.
25/1/2011 - My friend received the keyboard!! Speedy delivery! She will post it tomorrow!
26/1/2011 - It's snowing heavily in Japan. My friend has to stay home for a while.. not too sure when it's safer to go to the post office yet. But hey, safety first..
27/1/2011 - She said that she is posting it today.. waiting for her good news. :D
28/1/2011 - Posted. 2.1kggggg! Oh dear!

Welcome to the club. It's all downhill from here. You shouldn't have mentioned you have a contact in Japan though. You're going to get inundated with requests to hook geekhackers up.

Oh, I forgot to mention that in my first post. I went for Brown because I want the feedback meanwhile don't like the idea of (noisy) clicks of the Blue. Never had I tried one though but hopefully it will be a good buy. :D

I think you'll like them, and it's definitely a good buy, if you don't like them you can always resell the board and make back most of the money spent. Personally, browns are my favorite cherry switch, they're nice and light, with just enough of a bump to stop me from accidentally pressing them while I rest my fingers on the keys. I find them a little louder than your typical rubber dome keyboard, but it's not significantly louder.

Oh dear oh dear.. the waiting is driving me crazy.

At the same time, the power of craziness is taking over me. I have a voice that tells me that a Ducky tenkeyless will be good enough and I don't need to spend more to get this Leopold tenkeyless... ahhh!

Oh dear oh dear!!! I just received the keyboard. Being a first timer in mechanical keyboard, it feels so fun to type on. The sound it makes is so soothing as well! And all of these excitement gotten my head and I forgot to do the unboxing video. Anyhow, I will take some photos of the keyboard later on.

I just did some test typing and I got like 70+ wpm which I normally can hit 80+ wpm. Probably because I haven't got used to it yet.

Woohooo!!!

Hey bug,

My next one will not be so fast but if I do get one in the future, I'd like to try on a blue switch. I heard that its more fun to type on but still not sure whether I will like the noise it makes though.

Anyway, this Archiss is so fun!!
