Best switch or BS for Sc2
« on: Fri, 28 January 2011, 13:47:35 »
So, I have gotten into looking around for a good keyboard for Starcraft, and what I have found that a lot of R.T.S players use is either Buckling spring or cherry blue keyboards. Whats your opinion and what do you suggest? Also my choice for the Cherry Blue keyboard would most likely be a Das keyboard, but the thing is I have heard of people having the letters rub off the keys has that happened to any of you?

I've tried playing SC2 with both Topre (HHKB Pro 2) and Cherry Blues (Das S Ultimate).  Both are good and fun keyboards to use, especially because they have low resistance.  If you have a high APM, you're probably spamming keys and with a lower resistance your fingers don't get fatigued as fast.  I average an APM around 160~, and my personal preference is the cherry blues.  The clicking sound, as weird as this may sound, keeps me completely zoned into the game and helps with my focus.  With regards to my key letters, I have the blank set so I haven't had any issues =)  (However, I just installed the black on black keycaps...so we'll see how that goes)

However, my friend who owns a Filco with cherry browns stands by his choice.  I don't think he's tried any other keyboards, other than rubber domed ones.  You'll also see that a popularity rose in the e-sports mechanical keyboard market when FruitDealer won the 1st GSL and lifted up his Filco with browns.

It is obvious. He won because of the filco with cherry browns.

I can suggest what not to get: linear switches. It is important that every keystroke registers in SC2, and a linear switch doesn't give you any tactile indication of that. I've never gamed on linear switches, though, so it's conjecture on my part. I've used blues, buckling springs and white ALPS for SC2, and they all work great.

On a side note: N-Key rollover is a non-issue for Starcraft, so a Das is a fine choice.

That's not FruitDealer.  All StarCraft players have the same girlyman hands.

Yeah, I was just showing a related image.  All those TSL guys use Filco browns.  They probably have a sponsorship from them.

Das via PS/2 is NKRO.  Plugged into USB, I believe it's only 6KRO.

in fact, every korean sc2 pro gamer I've seen so far use browns. With one exception: Boxer, he's on blues.

Actually, videos of FD playing have a very distinct sound, much like Alps. Some of believe it is a Filco Zero board still.

That aside, I much prefer SC2 on a tactile board, in this case Blues, compared to a linear. I honestly found myself missing keystrokes often on the 6Gv2, simply because it wasn't clear when it would actuate.

Brown switches, not blues. And that is because it has blue LEDs for the caps, num lock, and scroll lock. Blue switches have green LEDs, Blacks get orange LEDs.

The issue is the Filco Zero also uses a blue LED but uses Alp switches and the same body.

right on the money.

also, seeing how sks and Rain both have filco browns, I serioously doubt FD has a different KB than theirs.

Yeah, I doubt FruitDealer would use a Zero either.

The issue is mostly that video clip of him playing where many hear a distinctly ALPS switch sound.

Now, I'm not trying to say you should get an ALPS board, as most people would agree the Cherry switches are superior, but it is just an interesting point that still hasn't be set in stone still.

@OP people suggested that i get brown switches, i did, and am very happy with them. i got the filco majestouch from armygroup. i haven't tried any other switch types, but  i can tell you that these work great, i actually wasn't expecting them to be as good as they are. and yeah i got it for sc2(masters league if you were wondering).

I think the issue people here have with the Zero is that it isn't Cherry switches. Personally, I prefer ALPS type switches, but it all comes down to personal preference.

And, I could be wrong about the reasons. But from what I've seen of both, they are essentially identical other than switch type (and obviously key feel, due to the higher wobble on ALPS type switches).

I did go for a brown switch and I love it. My next purchase will be a blue. Reason for not getting blue would be that the clicky sound might be a bit too much for my enviroment.

However actually love the sound when you buttom out on my keyboard, still gives a distinct sound and not too loud, depends how you typing...

browns or blues, cant go wrong with either...

You can see here in this video and can hear too wich Switch is using The Emperor:
Not a valid youtube URL

First minutes you can see his Workstation and his Filco making "click click"

So here may come Keyboardlover and post his pic with the Korean father.

At 43:30 you can see the Blue stems of his Filco MX Blue.

I don't know how does BoxeR live with the noise from the blues, it distracts the hell out of me when I play starcraft, makes me even more nervous than I already am. lol

BoxeR's Wings was an awesome watch.  It's nice to see how one of the legends of the sport goes about his daily life.  If you're a SC lover, it's a must watch.

I think the sound and pitch of the blues help keep a rhythm going.  I know when I APM spam at the start of the game to warm up my fingers, I enjoy hearing the sound of the keys in a smooth, rhythmic motion.

Just put in an order for a tenkeyless Filco with browns as my first mechanical keyboard, they seem to be the preferred switch by those on TL (maybe just FD fanboyism) and also I can't have the high pitch of the blues keeping family members up at night.

Not at the moment.  There's just this one episode so far.

As soon as a new vid is posted on TL I'll bump it up.

And for those interested in BoxeR's gear, he has a Filco with cherry blues and a Razer DeathAdder.  In the last vid he was seen with a Logitech Mini Optical, but he's since switched since the third GSL.
