Model M double tapping?
« on: Fri, 28 January 2011, 22:15:26 »
So I've got a model m.  Bought it off a friend who had it in his garage for $30.  Worked fine for about 6 months, but recently when I hit the r key it will sometimes double-tap it even though I've only hit it once.

I've tried multiple times cleaning it out with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol, and this usually makes it go away for awhile.  But it always comes back.  Any ideas on what the problem might be?

I had this problem and the spring was loose on the hammer. It's not really trivial to fix. Take something that can grab the spring and while twisting it... clockwise? push it further down.

DON'T do it until somebody confirms the direction of rotation. :/
-edit. Confirmed that spring goes on clockwise.
Also, maybe you broke a couple of rivets that were keeping the membrane close to the hammer, this might be an issue as well.

Nice improvised tool.

Now, have you got a picture of a Model M with the caption "I'd tap that!"?

My weapon of choice is the SevenDeadlyCocktailSticks.

The middle stick slides in to compress the spring, and has a concave tip to stop it slipping off the hammer.

Thanks!
Very easy to make, and the sticks I had were just the right size, 2mm - I don't know if that's an industry standard size for cocktail sticks!
The dimple in the end was made with a 2mm drill bit, using the tube of six sticks to keep it aligned.
