My first mechanical keyboard!
« on: Fri, 04 February 2011, 18:24:35 »
Soooooooooooooooo, after a lot of peeking and reading on this forum, and video watching on youtube...i decided it was time to get a proper keyboard.
I first started thinking about an Happy Hacking Keyboard pro 2, since i read about it like a mystic keyboard, with some sort of magic aurea around it, but after peeking around i realized that the layout doesn't really suit to me...even more considering i'm italian, and i will use different keyboards for work during the day, so getting used to a different layout would be even worse.
So..no HHKB for me...then i started to look at the unicomp spacesaver, but considering the shipping cost, the extra fee and taxes to get it here in italy..i decided to look at european resellers...and get someething a bit better built

The best option for me is the keyboardco.com and i'm very happy about that! I got a pre.order for a Filco tenkeyless, with blues. Bruce offered to switch keys and "build" a customized tenkeyless with italian layout which is not available at the moment.

So, i want to thank Bruce and...i can't wait to get it, which sould happena aroud the end of the month.

yeah, i'm keeping the keyboard at home, using it as a "pleasure device", because i wouldn't like to mess it up while at work...i'm an electrical engineer, and i run my business with my dad in projecting electrical lines for factories ecc ecc, normally we use Autocad a lot, and we don't really treat our keyboards there that well :P
At home i use just ubuntu and mac os, so i will ask for the keycaps switch, as Bruce already offered to do the switching for me.
Tenkeyless with european layout are getting there soon, then he will fix mine ;)

Decent for the KeyboardCo to knock up a board in your required layout, rather than having to either wait for the specific layout to become available or chase down the key set yourself.

Benvenuto !

But you could have taken an hhkb blank and paste some italian layout stickers on it :-)
Realforce 105 FR, HHKB Pro 2 black, 1 Raptor K1 Black Cherry and 1 Raptor K1 Red Cherry , Compag MX 11800  tBrown Cherry, G80-3000 Clear Cherry , G80-1000 Blue Cherry / Ghetto red, Lexmark 1992 SSK Buckling spring, Unicomp 2011 Customizer 102 Buckling spring
and a few rubber dome/scissors keyboards from Apple/Logitech

oh wow!
i remeber studying "the epic of Gilgamesh" at my first year at the liceum, i think it's the first poem in the history of humanity, coming from mesopotamia, the land between the two rivers, Tigri and Eufrate....read.."Iraq" :P

about the hhkb, when we buy outside Europe, we get charged with 20% extra fee (IVA), plus customs fee (20-30€)

the whole thing would make
325$ + 65$ + 45$ = 430$ = 316€

So, since this is my first mechanicl keyboard, i never used a keyboard with a layout like the hhkb (keys have different shape in europe, and position) i decided that 430$ for a keyboard is too much. I use the arrow keys quite often too, and the HHKB looked weirda to me, access to the arrows with the Fn key is not that handy to me.
I visit the us, twice or three times per year, and my gf is from there, so i could still get it delivered to her place..oh..she is moving here in the early September..just in case, i will deliver it to her sisters place :P
