Compact MX Brown keyboard with Touchpad exist?
« on: Sat, 12 February 2011, 08:20:02 »
Hi,

Does anyone know if there is a keyboard similar to the G80-11900 that has Brown switches instead of Black?  Or maybe another keyboard that has brown switches as well as a touchpad?  Or Blue switches?

Thanks!

Trying to find one in USA

A lot of the Cherry G80s have touch pads. I know at least the MX8000 series have them.

Well, the mx-8000 keyboards i've seen don't have touchpads, but the mx-8100 series do.  They're just too bulky though... those extra keys, card reader, L-shaped enter key(ugh!).  I'm looking for something compact like the mx-11900 but with brown switches.  Thanks though!

Well, the other stipulation is that I want it to at least be New Looking, since i want to give it to someone as a gift... so that most likely eliminates the compaqs

Ah, yes, you are correct, it is an 8100. Though mine had a standard ANSI enter key, but it was quite large.

Does it have to be brown? There are the TG3 models, such as was listed in the great finds section. It's possible something like that comes in brown, rather than black, switches.

The keyboard will be for my sister, who does a lot of typing (NO game-playing), so I'm fairly committed to browns.  Blues might be ok, but I think the clicking could bother her other roommates.  I read that TG3 thread yesterday and went to buy one but was too late... so I ended up buying a used Data911 for myself hehe.  Something like that in brown would probably be good too... as long as I can find one that is New-ish.

The trackpad is not all that necessary for her... it's just that I really like the 11900.  I might just end up getting her a Das Professional Silent.  The Das doesn't have any media keys, but I'm not sure if she uses them or not.

Does anybody know of any Brown-switch keyboards that also have media keys?

You said roommate. Does that mean either you or her are a student? Das a pretty hefty (24%) discount for students. You just have to send a copy of your school ID to get it. Plus free shipping.

Last I checked, it came to like $98, shipped. Pretty nice deal on it, honestly.

You could buy both a Compaq MX11800 and Cherry MX11900, then swap the springs/stems from each switch. You would then have your Cherry trackpad keyboard with brown switches and one with a trackball and black switches. Then  if you wanted to, you could resell the MX11800 with the MX blacks in it...I'm sure someone would buy it.

Thanks for the replies.  I'm not really looking to do any modding, just don't have the time.  That's a good idea though.  I might see about the Das student discount though.
