Do Topres "stick" at all?
« on: Mon, 14 February 2011, 06:59:22 »
I'm thinking about snagging one of the Topres that EK has on sale and if I'm doing it I need to act fast (i.e. today) while I still have family traveling in the US (significant savings for me).

I don't consider myself "special needs" but one thing that really bothers me about some rubber dome keyboards I've used in the past, particularly some particular runs of MS Naturals, is when keys stick when not hit at perfect right angles.  Any side force could jam the key or snag it briefly when being pressed.  Also, some keyboards have more key cap wobble than others in these situations and lead to instability.  I notice on my temporary Logitech Illuminated that sometimes the keys go a little wonky and feel odd under my fingertips.  Sometimes this is a gaming issue (rapid, panicked, unpredictable stabbing at keys), sometimes a typing issue (I've had shift keys hitch, sometimes other keys farther from home row).

I see mechanicals as a general way to avoid this.  There's a discrete switch with a stem, and not a plastic plunger in a plastic tube sliding up and down.  The side view of a Topre switch (seen at EK) seems to show similar tube-in-tube construction.  I haven't had a hint of this issue on my model M despite it not being mechanical switch based, however, which is one of the things that makes it feel great.

Thanks,

I have not had any sticking issues with my HHKB. Mine is about  a year old now and I have been using it steady for the past few months. So in the short term, no sticking. Long term I don't know.
I like to think that  after spending close to 300 US on a keyboard that sticking wouldn't be a problem.

I have had some cheapo rubber domes at one time that my wife wore out. It took her a couple of months to destroy the shift and a keys...
FWIW, the DASIII with blue cherries that she is using  now is still going strong : ) Except for the legends coming off of the keys.

I can guarantee you that Topre keyboards do not have this issue and would likely not have this issue even after years and years of use, because of the way the switch works.

Increased friction on off-center keypresses is a nuisance on any kind of keyboard, so the good ones will not suffer from this, regardless of type.

By contrast, Cherry MY mechanisms are quite notorious for off-center friction, while good rubber domes (e.g. my BTC 5131C, or FSC KBPC PX) do not suffer from the problem.
Hardware in signatures clutters Google search results. There should be a field in the profile for that (again).

This message was probably typed on a vintage G80-3000 with blues. Double-shots, baby. :D
