Help me Buy: Entry-Level Blue-Switch
« on: Fri, 25 February 2011, 00:49:05 »
Edit: Added a TL;DR at the bottom because I'm stupidly wordy :)

I've spent the last few days poring over the threads here and elsewhere, looking at prices, watching (and listening to!) videos, and reading reviews. I've decided that what I really, really what is an entry-level keyboard with Cherry Blue switches. Being in the rural US, I've got more options than some, less than others. My only major local big box store (Best Buy) doesn't even stock the Razer Black Widow, so my ability to test these things out is essentially zilch (none of my friends or acquaintances have mechanical keyboards, either), and I'll have to order online.

Unfortunately, picking the best* and then actually buying it is proving exceptionally difficult. First, I'll lay out what I've planned on with a bit of a blurb on each, just so we know what I'm discussing :)

Rosewill RK-9000 - Reviews very well for its price, I like Newegg a lot!
EliteKeyboards Blue Switch - Their Majestouch line reviewed well, looked beautiful
Razer Black Widow - Needlessly gamery, but very pretty, easily available, goes on sale, too!

I've eliminated the Scorpius M10 and Adesso MKB 135-B, as I've heard less than positive things about their build quality (always going to be an issue at my price level, which is, hopefully, under $100 USD shipped) and reliability over time which worry me. I'd be willing to reconsider if recently shipped models are better-made or you guys say that they're worth the money! You *are* the experts :)

Anyway, I feel very trapped right now with my top three choices because the first two seem to be completely unavailable unless I get lucky enough to catch an eBayer selling one (foreign availability of the Filco Majestouches is no go--the shipping kills my price point). People talk about buying the RK-9000 recently (someone on this board reported getting one just two weeks ago!), but everywhere I go reports the item is no longer in stock or no longer even exists!

Moreover, the EliteKeyboards site is apparently moving over to a new Korean manufacturer to replace its Filco line, and while the initial review on this board was positive, I don't know if they plan to offer a full 104/5-key board and what the pricing and availability will be on the new boards. If they're $80-$100 and coming out in a week, I'm happy to wait, but if they're $150 and not shipping till late March, I'm a lot less enthusiastic.

The Razer looks very nice and I'm not TOO concerned about KRO, as I've been using $10 Microsofts and Dells for most of my life and while I do game, I am NOT pro-level at anything and never will be. I might be getting into rhythm-based gaming in the near future thanks to getting hooked on a Stepmania knockoff on my Android phone, and I do play Starcraft 2 and RPGs like Mass Effect 2 and The Witcher regularly on my PC, so if the Razer's KRO limitations might harm a bad, no-coordination gamer, then I wouldn't necessarily want it.

My primary use case outside of the aforementioned gaming is writing. As you can see from this increasingly lengthy post, I love to write and can be very long-winded. I am working on a long fantasy novel and can go at high speeds for hours at a time and my current ComfortCurve2000 is just not up to the job at all. I also code Python and might pick up Java, so I do make a moderate amount of use of funky characters and numbers--partly why I am somewhat attached to my numpad (despite being a touch-typist, if I'm rattling off more than 3-4 numbers in a row, or doing math in a calculator program, I tend to move over to the numpad as I am faster on it than I am with the horizontal number row).

Finally, I would love to have working media keys in Windows 7 and Ubuntu or Mint Linux. I listen to music (iTunes and/or MediaMonkey) all day long on my second monitor, and if I could finally start controlling track forward/backward without having to alt-tab over to it (the Back/Forward keys on my CC2K don't work unless my music application has focus, although the Pause/Play button is universal), I'd be ecstatic. So, high-quality drivers and non-focus media-key usability are huge plusses in my book.

So, I present it to you, the experts: Do I pick up the Razer now, or try to wait out Rosewill or EliteKeyboards for their lineups? I need something that will last me, although I recognize that at my price point, I'm not going to get Model M levels of durability. Are the other brands ever going to really come, or is the Razer my only remaining good-quality kb at this level?

Thanks for any and all advice!

(P.S. - I've already discussed it with the missus, regarding the blue switches. She says that my typing on my rubber dome is already hellaciously annoying and that she puts on her headphones most of the time as it is; something louder won't really annoy her more. She's a keeper!)

* As subjective as that word might be!

TL;DR: I want a $70-$100 USD mechanical keyboard with Cherry Blue switches. I like the Razer BlackWidow, Rosewill RK-9000, and the Elite Keyboard models most. Any other mech keyboards in that range (104/5-key, media keys, PS2 or USB interface) of good quality? Any ideas on when the RK9000 and EK's new Cherry's will be available, and will they be worth the wait? Heavy writing, moderate coding, moderate low-level gaming (RTS and RPG).

Do not get the blackwidow... razer plastic tends to rub off really easy and their keyboards tend not to last long in general. Other two are both good options from what I've heard. I have just ordered a ducky dk9008 (b)

the RK9000 is the obvious choice, BUT, if you can get a brand new blackwidow for under $60, then you might want to go for it.

Being a fan of used boards...my advice is pretty simple. Buy a used Cherry g80-1000/3000 with blues off ebay and give it a few weeks of facerollin to test it out before you go out and buy a new 100$ board.

If you don't mind losing the number pad's functionality, you can remap those keys for media use.  This is why I decided on a full-sized keyboard instead of a tenkeyless.

I appreciate the black widow warnings. Razer seemed too flashy to have put out a well-engineered, sensible product :(

I saw a post from the owner(?) of EK linked elsewhere that mentioned their new Leopolds were likely not getting stocked till well into next month, and I am concerned about them selling out...and curious about what engineering differences they may have slipped in!

I read in the Canadian RK-9000 thread that their availability can be very inconsistent. Is Rosewill expected to be stocking these things on newegg, chief value or elsewhere in the near future? Is it hit and miss, like Canada, scheduled availability, or well and truly discontinued like the newegg message could be seen to suggest.

I expect either good things on all fronts in March or April Fools.

And the Black Widow is not THAT bad.  Pics or it didn't happen.

Okay, i try to snap the uneven leveled keys for you(with my 2MP camera phone...)

For overlapping of keys you can just google it, lots available.

For inconsistent/faulty switch, sorry i really dont have a video recorder/mic so believe it or not, it is your choice/luck.

The ''Level'' is set by the price. Cheap = Entry-Level

BTW, RAZER FAILED TO MAKE ME THEIR FANBOI TO SERVE UNDER THEM. INSTEAD, THEY CREATED A HATER AND NOW, THE HATER GONNA HATE!!!!

1ST: INCONSISTENT(YET ANOTHER!!!) USE OF KEYCAPS MATERIAL!!!

2ND: HIDDEN(INNER) CRACK!!!(NOT SURE IF EVERY BW ALSO HAVE SUCH PROBLEM!!!)

3RD: BENT BRAIDED CABLE!!!

FROM THE POV OF A HATER, THIS BOARD REALLY ARE SUPERIOR!!!!

Razer makes some decent mice, I have no idea whatsoever on why every one of their keyboards has been nothing but a catastrophic failure.

How about the Ducky 1008 from PChome?

$83 including shipping ($73+$10), and $89 ($79+$10) for the laser itching caps.

Here, I even have the link for you!

What's the shipping turnaround and return policy like with pchome? Given the misgivings some posters here have about the Ducky (especially the 1xxx series), I'm uneasy about potentially spending a lot of time and money on something that may need to be returned, if that would even be possible.

Someone earlier recommended the RK-9000 and only strengthened my desire for Newegg to get them back in stock...especially with the growing temptation to break my budget and shell out for a Das Model S or a Ducky 9008 from foreign shores or even, gasp!, OCN.

I really so appreciate the good advice here and plan to keep reading it until I can make a good decision and/or certain models become easily available in the us again :)

Wait for newegg to restock... I don't think there is anything cheaper than 99bucks with Filco level of build quality around.

Maybe get a G80-3000 from a European vendor or friend.  I think the Keyboard company has them for like GBP 60, which is, depending on the weight of the Yankee Peso today, about USD 100.

I'm not saying to go out and get a razer blackwidow but i have the basic version of the board i have ZERO of those issues. I got it for sale @ newegg for 62$ and i think its worth every penny of that.

Try check all those i mentioned once again. I certainly sure that it will at least have the problem of bent braided cord and uneven switch on certain keys. The uneven keycaps issue(AS keys) i just realised/confirm yesterday and haven discuss it with others BW owner so i not sure whether they also faced the same problems. For uneven switch, i once tried 4 out of 5 BW have uneven switch at arrow keys, not to mention another 104keys hide inside the box... Most BW owners also agree they faced the uneven switch problem(with the exception of RAZER FANBOI and some ppl who is less picky).

If you REALLY DONT have any of the problems above, you likely:
1. ARE A EXTREMELY LUCKY FELLOW
2. BOUGHT A REVIEWER EDITION (cz so far only one Tech Journalist BW owner who got his BW free claimed that his BW IS COMPLETELY PERFECT, thus we suspect RAZER got specially made REVIEWER EDITION for review purpose... ). HE ''CLAIMED'' THAT HE IS NOT A FANBOI...

P/S: I IGNORED THE COMMENTS OF SOME OTHER BW OWNER AFTER VERIFIED THAT THEY ARE RAZER FANBOI. THEY ARE PRATICALLY BLINDED BY THE BLING BLING AND EVERYTHING IS PERFECT AS LONG AS GOT BLING BLING AND SNAKES LOGO ON IT...

I guess i'm lucky.  Mine is free from ALL of those defects and i assure you i'm not just saying that because i love razer.  I don't really have a brand that i'm loyal to in the keyboard/mouse department; at least not yet

I have only had mine for just over four weeks so maybe its something that happens over time?  i doubt it though; in the past four weeks i have prob put an avg of 15 hours a day on it but you never know.

There's a Firefox plugin that hides all Youtube comments that meet certain criteria, including all caps, more than two excalamation/question marks in a row, and more than one instance of incorrect capitalization. Nothing like a little linguistic elitism to make watching old commercials and poorly transcoded late-90s flash videos a little bit more pleasant!
