Crysis 2 PC demo
« on: Wed, 02 March 2011, 13:42:41 »
Hi guys, just wondering if anyone else has played this? Pretty disappointed with the blatant consolification tbh - anyone else have likes/dislikes?

I ended up writing an open letter to Crytek here (http://technickal.org/?p=104) but I doubt they'll change the game much in favour of PC gamers. A pity really, considering the game's fine heritage...

It seemed they fiddled a good bit with the code of warhead, ran about 15-20 fps better than the first game

It ran just fine for me on an 8800gt with only 2gb of RAM.  I wasn't as impressed as I thought I would be, but the demo is missing vehicles, and the important stuff to throw at people.

The deathmatch aspect is cooler than most, and the attack-defend crash site mode is just what you would expect it to be.  I am hoping for much more dynamic game modes in the full version, though.

I am a little disappointed with 6 v. 6, too.  I was hoping for at LEAST 18 players per game.
Keyboards:

Ducky TKL MX Brown/Blue 80% (White) - 1087-F 白の空

Yeah I'm not expecting much from Crysis II tbh. I would have downloaded the demo but after my experience with the Dragon Age II demo this week I figured I'd rather leave it for the time being. I'll get it regardless but I doubt I'll touch the multiplayer. Is 6v6 honestly the player cap?

Vista wasn't bad. It just needed a lot of RAM to power that awesome elastic thing the windows do when they are resized.

I was shocked when Xbox owners got the demo before PC, especially considering the first one was PC exclusive. I was hoping Crytek would at least give something to please PC gamers and save us from console-ification at least for a short while.

Unreal in 1998 did exactly the same thing as Crysis in 2007, and I'm sure there are other examples from the dark age of computers. It's all about pushing graphical boundaries and making people buy hardware. How many times over has PC gaming been killed?

Crysis pushed the farthest, which resulted in the hardware of that time not being able to run it well. Even today people use it as a benchmark everywhere. A symptom of bad code is that you won't get a game to run smoothly. Crysis runs smoothly on my rig, and that's with everything maxed. Saints Row 2 will never run smoothly on any computer. That's a ****ty console port.

Personally I'm looking forward to Battlefield 3 - the trailer actually was filmed and controlled on PC, which is a _very_ refreshing change from most other game releases of the last year which were coded first for console and then ported to PC. As the trailer is a pre-alpha build, and at a point in the video you can see 'WSAD' keys being prompted, it is heartening to see a developer like DICE refusing to sell out and continue to innovate in the PC market. GameInformer has some excellent video interviews with some of the key members of the development team if anyone is interested.

Amen to BF3. I'm just hoping the multiplayer has the same feel as the older games. I still play BF2 fairly often. I am a little disappointed in the lack of mod support, though, but its kinda understanable, given how hard it is to mod on the Frostbite engine.

As for Crysis 2, I'm really not happy with the direction taken by Crytek, catering to the consoles at the expense of the PC community that made them. Single player will have to be something really special if I'm to pick this one up. I've never really cared for Crysis multiplayer much anyway.

From what I've read, it seems the single player is being developed by Crytek Germany, whilst the multiplayer was developed by Crytek UK. That is to say, the single player facet of the game will be constructed by the original Crysis team. So at least that bodes well, but I'd still wait for independent SP reviews to make sure it was worth purchasing.

What I have noticed in the last month is that a lot of people from around the net are saying they would actually invest in a gaming pc or upgrade to play Battlefield 3 on the PC. A lot of those would be returning PC gamers and of course a few console gamers who just want the full feature set. I really hope BF3 makes a success on the PC and leads to developers taking the platform seriously again. Yes this is probably wishful thinking I know but at this stage of this generation, isn't it time we saw games being released on today's hardware and not on technology that will soon be comparable to a kitchen toaster?

The problem with games in general is that they are 1) made with restrictive and prohibitive DRM that's meant to deter pirates, but in fact only manages to make the game cumbersome and unattractive. You bought it and you can't even install it on two separate computers? ..and 2) made with a corporate mindset. How can we keep the player playing? How can we keep the reward-stream flowing? How can we turn this into a social network? So he pushes the game onto as many other people as possible?

Both of these decrease game value drastically. The result of #2 in particular is that lots of people will play it, but it turns into an unhappy necessity, an addiction, a chore. It does not flatter you as a company and it does not help the struggling PC industry. In my little world, lots of people pirate PC games because computer and console games in general have **** value nowadays. And companies do these things because they have to hold on to a struggling market and they think it'll counter piracy. Chicken or egg, I don't know. When in doubt, blame capitalism.

And ripster, you got a point there. I don't think that graph includes digital transactions though. That's the big money for PC games nowadays. Steam alone sells how much digital content, a billion's worth annually?

@Ripster: Why is it that in any PC gaming related thread you feel the need to push the 'death' of PC gaming? It gets a bit stale after a while. PC gaming isn't dying by any means, it's just a niche area, which is still very profitable for the hardware giants that drive computer innovation. I already mentioned in another thread that Valve/Steam was more profitable per head than Apple or Google. You should check it out some time.

You prefer analogue sticks for a first person shooter? That's quite odd. Most people would go for the precision of a mouse and keyboard in the FPS category. I guess that's the reason we'll never see Console gamers vs. PC gamers online...

Crysis.  A classic at OCN.  Great excuse for overclocking your system yet terrible gameplay.

Minecraft.

Trackmania was released in 2003.

Garry's mod is the cat's ass.

Never heard of the others.

I never had trouble playing Crysis unless I went to enthusiast level settings. You seem to have a very skewed view of PC gaming...

You're about as coherent as spaghetti. First you're talking about graphical performance, and then when you realise you're talking horse****, you move to a subjective definition of what a good game is... it's just a waste of time.

Just thought I would add that whenever you see sales figures for different platforms, the PC sales figures never include things like Steam or D2D (unless they specifically say so). And Steam sells tons of games.
