Advise for a mechanical virgin :-)
« on: Sat, 05 March 2011, 14:48:11 »
Hi geeks

So I ruined my old keyboard - once again - and am looking for a replacement that lasts longer then 2-3 years. I ran into mechanical keyboards while browsing the razer homepage and gave it a closer look.
I am using the keyboard kinda 50/50 for gaming (MMORPGs, RTS, RPGs, FPS in that order) and typing (stupid bachelor thesis shifted it to 30/70, but hey...).
From what I have read the best "dualspec" would be going for Cherry MX Browns. So I've been looking for a keyboard with those which is not too expensive, offers some programmable keys and has a German layout (don't care about the printing on the keys, but I don't wanna get used to differently aligned <>#' etc.)
The typical 'gaming' keyboard like the razer blackwidow seem to have blue or black switches, whilst the 'typist' keyboards like the g80-3000 (I assume 'soft' means brown?) don't have any macrokeys.
Do you know 'the' perfect solution for me, or will I have to settle (most likely with the g80-3000 which is 70€ cheaper... don't value the macrokeys THAT high :-))

Thanks in advance,
crazy-daddy

I think this idea that blues are somehow bad for gaming is really bogus.  You just have to decide whether you like the click or not.  Blues also take a little more force to actuate...i think.  At least that's how it feels to me.

Some even like the blacks for typing (tho this is a rare case in which someone's personal opinion can, in fact, be wrong).  The best thing you can do is get your hands on a few keyboards and check them out.  See if a few local retailers or buddies have a keyboard you can clack away on for a bit.  You can also go the higher priced but guaranteed method of buy 1 of everything, and sell off the ones you don't like.

I myself have owned a couple DAS blues but am moving on to browns, mostly because they do feel like a lighter switch.  The noise is also a consideration.  And of course the topre guys will chime in here momentarily.

G80-3000s do not ship with browns, instead "soft tactile" indicates clears. Those are not bad as far as compromise switches go, but quite a bit heavier than blues or browns.
Hardware in signatures clutters Google search results. There should be a field in the profile for that (again).

This message was probably typed on a vintage G80-3000 with blues. Double-shots, baby. :D

WHAT?!

So I could get UK-G80-300 with clears?

If so where could I get one with cheapest shipping to finland?

Don't bust your cherry.....

Don't bust your cherry on Cherries. :nono: Sell your car :car: , ride your bike from now on, and buy a Topre set of mechanicals by Realforce (elitekeyboards.com-no, I don't work for them) like I just did.  Now when I'm stupid and vacant :der:I just tell people "But I just bought a Realforce" and they understand I'm floating in Margaritaville.  Got me off a speeding ticket yesterday and charge of possession when they found out I wasn't racing home on my bike to drugs growing in my house, it was just a new Realforce keyboard.  Those guys.

On the other hand I'm pretty much done now in the keyboard realm and have no place left to go, since awesomeness has been fulfilled.  And I'm still a noob to mechanicals.  But I bought a Realforce too early and now it's over.

So on second thought, keep your car, keep your mind, avoid the cops and buy Cherries or something and whatever you do, do NOT buy anything Realforce until you life falls flat without purpose into mundane mediocrity :yawn:and you're seconds from pulling the trigger.  Then sell your .45 and get a Realforce and tell them keyboards saved your life and then you'll be just like us.  A geek, alive, and racing to get home, but you in your car and my on my bike.  Plus, you'll have both Cherries and Topres when you get there.

I hear that's how most folks here got their start....almost nobody was so stupid as to buy a Realforce in their first order.  Duh.

My two bits anyway.
