Cherry MX blue impression - 2 days and 2nd board idea?
« on: Sat, 12 March 2011, 20:06:22 »
Hey guys, have been using my first mechanical with Cherry MX blue switches (have tried black and hated it), the ducky dk9008, and its fantastic. The tactile bump and audible feedback is very satisfying and I'm starting to see my typing speed and accuracy getting higher.

Heres an 8min sound video lol (recorded a chat) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZBWLXgxv5k

Don't know whether I'll be able to order a new board. If I can, what are recommendations :D

Also, how do I remove a previous thread, the last one was useless....

Aren't clears called "soft tactile"?
Might be what you're looking for.

Browns are much lighter and have a less noticeable tactile bump. They are more linear.

Do you think that Browns are a good choice in a first intro to mechanical  boards for my Mom who doesn't have much experience w/kbs?
I mean, would it be a good light intro to clack/bump in a mechy?
I was thinking of picking up one of those Leo Browns together w/my Topre order tonight but wanted to see what you thought first?

I think that'd be a solid choice for your mom, definitely. How sensitive is she to noise? PCB-mounted are quieter (the Leopold is plate-mounted).

She really doesn't know what she likes/dislikes, since she's never owned a kb and hasn't used one since the "Selectric" days, however that was certainly a metal beast.  Is the difference huge or more subtle?

Model M would come close to that? Lot of noise and pretty strong feeling...
So I should add something useless here yes? Ok, ok...

If you had any experience with the keyboardco you would know:
tactile=brown
click=blue
linear=black

Still, it could be clearer...

Do you know if The Keyboard Co ships "US" ready boards?  I'm thinking of going w/a Filco tenkey full keyboard via Amazon, for my Mom and want to make sure that the keys(all of them) will be US layout, etc.  And, what did you think of that board?

Thanks.  I am confused by the international keyboard thing.  I would only buy from a US distributor to avoid the confusion.  However, aren't the differences subtle? Maybe just a key shape, like the Enter key being "L" shaped for example or maybe some function keys, like Ctrl might be in a slightly different location by only a key space or two? Otherwise, in general, shouldn't I be able to pick up any board from "out there" and use it like normal?
Sorry but I'm just looking at this for the first time.

Nope, those 101 or 104 on amazon are disributed by amazon, even if seller is UK based company.

Be careful with the Filco. The leds are way too bright for your mom.
Of course, you can always mod them later.

Oh, thanks for the heads up.  That is actually a consideration worth noting.  Maybe I should just go w/the Leopold and get her a numpad later if she starts to use numbers a lot.  I have been studying Ripster's Wiki on Cherry switches.  I'm intrigued but still learning.  I think I'll start a new thread on this, as I'm going through my research so I don't keep throwing this one off.
Thanks guys,

So, I may just get this one or not.  Like I said, I'll start a new thread on this topic.  I don't want to pollute this one with a "side topic".

Trust the product description. Filco calls their brown-switch keyboards "Tactile action," while blue-switch boards are labeled "click-action." Blacks are "linear action," and I have no idea what they'd call reds. . . "no action?"

I was poised to getting the Leo Brown but prefer a full sized kb for my Mom, so I found this Filco on Amazon.  It's a "an entry" level one, as Amazon calls it, due to NO Nkey roller over, etc but that's ok.  It's for my Mom.  Your thoughts on this board?
I could use your help because I need to make a purchase soon.  Thanks!

Assuming the product description is to be believed, then the only feature it lacks is true NKRO. I can't foresee any reason for anyone but a hardcore gamer of one of a couple of genres (FPS and rhythm games, mostly) will ever need anything closer to NKRO.

Of course, that does suggest that the circuitry and controller necessary to provide NKRO cost Diatec something on the order of $30 which strikes me as more than a little absurd. Since it is so absurd, it is also possible that this keyboard may be "lesser" in some other respects not mentioned in the product description. If you want to be absolutely sure, I'd shoot a message over to the owner of KeyboardCo through their own website.

I did check their website but couldn't find a similar product on offer there, so this appears to be an "Amazon-exclusive," so to speak. While I'm sure you could find it on sale on a Korean site like PCHome or ArmyGroup, I wouldn't trust the Google-Translated description there to give you a clear picture as to why this keyboard costs 20% less than its counterparts.

I don't really have a strong opinion on the Leos yet because I don't know what sort of filtering EK has done to their stock or what sort of improvements or modifications they've convinced the manufacturer to make to the keyboards at large. Until we get a few units into the US through them, it'll be hard to speak in any real terms about their actual quality, although I would say that the owner of EK appears to be a very trustworthy and cool guy here on the forums at least, and his work with Filcos in the last couple of years was fantastic.

If you think you might wait for a Leo anyway, why not take the time to email Bruce from KeyboardCo and see what's up with that cheapo Filco? Either way, you won't get a keyboard immediately, but if the non-NKRO Filco checks out, you can still order and have it sooner than you'd be able to with the Leo :)

Can someone please answer the OP. Thinking of either brown or clear switches, considering that I'm loving these blues (but sometimes its too loud when my parents watch tv in the same room).
