Is there an official geekhack IRC?

And here I was thinking of removing the SUBSTANTIAL advertising we do for the IRC channel.

Thought this was a facitious thread...

Little do you know many people on this site are using keyboards from around that same period.

I take that back. 88 :p but seriously, no one used it til the 90s.  It's where all the cool kids hung out when they wanted to bash aol haha.

I was on IRC in late 80's at University. Back then it was very select. Only lonely computer nerds and mad scientists were on it. I was in the first group trying to seduce a girl in the second group.

Then later I had my share of IRC on Windows with mIRC in the early 90's. The democratization of this media made accessible to all. Then ICQ came and Instant Messaging clones such as MSN. That's about the period where I became an IM hater :-)

Lol I was just going to mention ICQ and you beat me to it, that stupid little green flower thing.  I originally used IRC as it was the only place to find good people to play in Q2 as going to the MSN.com zone and Heat.net sucked ass.  This was also back when OGL wasnt a laughing stock ladder, is OGL even still around?

Come join us! Imo, IRC beats any modern messenger system hands down; simple, streamlined and extensible.

I recommend irssi, weechat, quassel or mIRC in order of retro appeal.

Ripster, as craziest of them all on geekhack, it's only fitting that you should join us too.

I'm throwing my money in with dfj
and betting Ripster is one of the 30+
lurkers under a different nickname. I know he likes to give everyone the impression he's "above" irc, but one day he'll lash out against the Ripster jokes that are becoming more prevalent there and reveal himself. (fyi nothing mean spirited that I've noticed, mostly just Lego references)

One time I called Ripster a "cottin-headed ninnymuggins" on irc. I hope it never got back to him.
