[HELP] What to buy
« on: Mon, 11 April 2011, 09:24:33 »
Hey, i've just signed up on the forum as i'm looking for some advice and look to join this community once i get my first mechanical keyboard :D

However my problem is that i'm a complete newbie when it comes to what to buy. I'll mainly be using it for coding, however i want a keyboard that is good for playing games such as Quake live and league of legends as well.

I've had a look around and so far i've found the Razer Blackwidow and Cherry G80-3000, i'm looking to spend around 60-70 for my first keyboard.

Is the razer blackwidow my main choice because of the gaming side or should i not be drawn in by the razer brand.

Help much appreciated, feel free to post other keyboards and recommend the ones i have mentioned.

Thanks.

Blues aren't the favorite for gaming due to the activation point and reset point and loud high pitch click. I'm guessing this is what he's referring to.

Also, I agree, you need to raise your budget. You can get a Leopold tenkeyless from elitekeyboards for $117 shipped and taxed in the USA with your choice of Browns or Blues. It's probably a good starter board. Decent quality and decent feel for pretty cheap.

Could very well be:

I always switch to my keyboard with browns when playing FPS games because blues are too noisy when constantly spamming the WASD keys.

I highly suggest reading the GeekHack Wiki on the different types of keyswitch and their purported best use.

Basically, of the many varieties of Cherry switches, MX Blue might not be the best type for fast twitch FPS games.  A keyboard with any of the other types may be more efficient for you, e.g. MX Black (6Gv2), Red (var.), Brown (Filco, Celeritas, Leopold, etc.), and Clear (Deck).

So, reading the Wiki will give you a nice(r) overview of these and give you a better idea.

If you live in a city you could just go check GameStop or similar stores. The 6G is one of the few mechanical keyboards you can find in stores outside of Asia it seems.

I play Quake regularly, and I use a Filco blue cherry tenkeyless.  Many people don't like blues for fps gaming, but it works very well for me :)

Sure, I can play on a 10$ rubber dome just fine, but it doesn't mean it's good.
