How do Cherry clears compare to Topre 55g?
« on: Tue, 12 April 2011, 07:17:02 »
I'd like to hear from people who have done a direct comparison between clears and Topre 55g.

Presently I have keyboards with Topre 55g and Cherry browns (and BS, Cherry ML, and ALPS ivory, but they don't count).  Regardless of the key weight, I think that Topre and Cherry will always have quite different feels, but I'm curious about how closely they relate.

Thanks!

The closest thing you have to MX Clear is the MX Brown you already have. Do the comparison yourself :-).

The clear are a bit stiffer than the brown, with a very similar non clicky tactile bump.

You want to know how Topre 55g relate to Clear… Except for the fact they are both keyboard switches… They don't.

We all know Topre's mother but we have no clue who's the father.

It's been asked all the time here. "How do  you get a Topre kick without a Topre?"... You can't. Well... Not with Cherry or any other other mechanical switches I have tried. BUT "Good" rubber domes can be a decent alternative.

i've tried em both.. the clears more recently and the 55g was my first board.. they both had alot of pressure to the point where it hurt my fingers to type for too long ;D

the topre's felt more pleasurable imo.. the clears almost felt like a stiff rubber dome to me...even though technically topre's are too..

I find it amusing the number of people reporting that the rubber dome keyboard feels less like rubber domes than the switch based board.  Interesting.

I'm still using my 55g Topre at work and Cherry Brown board at home.  There's something I really love about the Topre touch (and sound) but as I've posted before there's also something about the Topre 55g which slows me down and makes me less fluid.

I'm not sure if it's the key weight, or if it's something else like the key cap area and key spacing (which won't change no matter which Topre board I get).  I still plan on buying a variable Topre when I see one come up in classifieds for a good price in Canada.

I find the browns quite light, but I'm getting used to them and muscle memory is coming around to bottoming out more and more gently.  I might switch back to my model M at the office just for giggles after a month with the Realforce.  That oughta be fun...

The Cherry MX clear is my farvorite switch so far. To me it feels nothing like a rubber dome. Not mushy at all. I've never had the opportunity to try a Topre, so I can't comment on that comparison.

Depending on what keyboard you have with the browns, there might be a gray switch under the spacebar which would have the same profile as the clears, but with a harder spring.

By this definition even my model F is mushy.

I find clears to be smooth before and after the tactile bump as well...but to each their own. They are definitely much MORE smooth once you replace the spring with a red/brown/blue spring. Ergo clears are my favorite switch! [strike](I'm planning on doing a full post one of these days with an explanation on ergo clears)[/strike].

Get a keytronic lt designer if you want a similar feel to Topre. Yep, rub in those domes.

Have you even tried clears?

Buckling springs are smooth before and after the point of tactility.  There's nothing about that definition that would fit a model F in the least.
Read my sig, I got two keyboards with clears with one of them being my daily driver.

They're... gritty, that's for sure, but mushy would not be the right word at all.

You don't feel like you are typing on a soft sponge, rather you can feel the stems grind against the leafs until those give way.

I've got ghetto clears on my Compaq MX11800 and I'm typing on a Realforce 55g right now. The clears are nice, but the 55g Realforce feel better to type on imo. The Realforce has a much softer landing (I expected a softer landing with the ghetto clears but didn't get it) and the keys on the Realforce have the tactile bump as soon as you press the key, not halfway down. That makes the Realforce keys feel a bit lighter than the ghetto clears since the ghetto clears need that little bit of extra pressure to get over the tactile bump in the middle.

Interesting points you've described here - thanks!  While I don't have clears (yet), I also feel that Topre 55g is both light and heavy at the same time.  Lots of tactile "pop" but an extremely smooth, low resistance key travel.

At the end you are right.

Clears with brown springs are just fantastic.

Already 65 switch modded on my U9BL-S, I hope to finish in a couple of hours
