Swap stem and spring on a Filco?
« on: Mon, 18 April 2011, 09:38:04 »
Hi,

this is my first entry here

I've been owning a Cherry G80-3000 with blues for a while now and at the same time I switched over to an alternative layout (neo) because my fingers really couldn't get friends with QUERTZ and touch typing. I got the board for a relatively good price - just wanted to try out a mechanical keyboard for the first time.

Now, I still like the Cherry... but... it takes up a lot of space on my desk due to its gianormous built and additionally the plastic shell works perfectly fine as a resonance body. I've already taken apart the shell and use the pcb on its own :peep:.

So, I did some research and ended up with the Filco tenkeyless with 88 keys. What I' m not so sure about is wether to get the blues again (like the click) or to try out the browns (like it quieter, too).

As the title indicates, I was wondering if it is possible to swap the stem and spring on the plate mounted Filco without soldering and messing around. (Just in case I get the browns and make my mind up that I prefer the blues after the first days, weeks...) On the pcb of the Cherry it is doable: I had to swap the green switch from under the spacebar with a blue one cause it needed way too much pressure :boxing:.

Similar posts on this topic could not really help me so far.

Thanks in advance.

To swap the stem and spring on a plate mounted board you have to desolder the switch from the plate and then do the swap. The only way to do a swap without soldering is to use a plate mounted board.

I'm not 100% sure (about 97.23% :p) so wait for someone like Ripster to come in and confirm this.

You're in France, I presume? If so, order from The Keyboard Co. They're pretty good with returns from what I understand so if you get the Browns and absolutely hate them then you can return to them for the Blues. If you get it from another source then I'm sure you'll be able to find someone on here to buy the Filco as they're a popular keyboard and hard to get for a good price in Europe.

Welcome to the NEW geekhack!
Nope. It is not possible without soldering.

That was quick. Ok, so now I really have to decide between browns or blues or spend a heck lotta money to try both...

I wanted to get them from Keyboard Co but they don't have the german layout available till July (too long to wait for that as I need a proper baord for typing kinda now) and anyway, I want to go otaku so it does not matter if its 88 key UK or GER. I'll already have to wait for the 105 blank keys: got a mail from them that said 2-4 weeks.

Post in the classifieds sections. There's plenty of European members and they may have Filco with German layout lying around they would like to get rid of. They also might pop in here later and tell you places you can get a Filco in German layout.

So much about not having to solder - just tripped over my plugged in earphones and ripped them apart.
