From the tail end of the last ssk thread, figured it should be separate.

Currently sitting at 202$, this could break the price record for a used board.

The record for a used SSK is $499.99.  I doubt this one will surpass that - unless you and KillWill get into a bidding war.

US only sale - a missed opportunity for an even higher final price. I agree it won't hit the $500, but that was a used Industrial SSK.

Well you're going to have to pay a lot if you're going to outbid me on that one, if and when he ever puts it up for sale.  What I'd really like though is his 1395217 Bernie Madoff special, probably one of the rarest of all the SSKs.

Why is is that only this model is fetching the crazee prices around?
I don't think it's not supposed to be worth this much but then again, I just sold one for a really decent price so who am I to complain

They all go from $200-300 at least. That's why I told you that you should have asked for much more than that.

Not all of them.
This one went for $175 this month.
Another one went for $75, though that could be considered an anomaly being it was BIN and probably would have sold for more at auction.

You have to consider other factors as well.  If someone who's never sold anything before on ebay tries to sell a SSK, they won't be able to get so much, being many people will shy away from a seller without a proven track record.  Trying to sell one from out of the country will also affect the price, sometimes up, but sometimes down.  Buyers from the States are going to shy away from something they have to pay close to $100 just to have it shipped to them.  I'm not sure how much ebay fees are, but that could be a consideration when comparing ebay prices vs. direct.

Plenty have sold for way under $200 during the past five months, though if only looking at the past two months or so, not so many, indicating that there is a recent spike in prices.  But that doesn't mean there's suddenly some huge demand for these.  Kinkng has mentioned that he's into buying up SSKs.  It only takes two people who are interested in SSKs to temporarily spike the prices, given there's not that many of them around.  Once they've got enough or lose interest, the prices will drop back down again, unless others start buying.

They fetch high prices because a lot of people want them.  Ripster posts his supply/demand graphic in just about ever ssk post (along with using the word 'threadcrapping').  That's basically why.

The reason the demand is so high is due to it being the only tenkeyless buckling spring board.  They really are terrific keyboards.

Well, a lot of people may want them, but there's not a lot of people bidding on them at these prices.  From the bids that I've looked at, there's only a few of the same bidders, and most, if not all of them are members here.  And those who are bidding them up already have a stash of them, so it's not like they need one to use.  Don't take this the wrong way, I'm not complaining at all, in fact I'd do the same thing myself if they were selling in a range I thought was reasonable.

I do think it's important to differentiate between sales on eBay and sales on Geekhack.  I've purchased four regular SSKs in the past month.  Three of those from Geehack members.  The average price I paid was $110, not including shipping.  In March, jpc sold his pristine condition bolt modded SSK via Geekhack.  He didn't say what he sold it for and I wasn't the buyer, but based on his post, I'm guessing $175ish. Had it been in just average condition, I would assume it would have gone for much less.   So I would say that based on the most recent data, average condition used SSKs selling on Geekhack are way below the $200 point.  Ebay sales are high profile sales reaching a much larger group of potential buyers, so naturally you'd expect those prices to be higher.  However, being most if not all the bidders are members here, it's a bit strange as well.

The way I see it, businesses, such as Clickykeyboards, that are in the business of selling keyboards are charging full retail prices.  Keyboards selling on eBay are on average selling for the market price.  Keyboards selling on Geekhack are selling on average for a wholesale price.  Lots of reasons for this, not the least of which is that some people feel a sense of community here and aren't out to make the maximum profit.  I know I've bought a lot of stuff for much less than I would have paid on eBay, and when it comes time to sell, I doubt then I'll try to get eBay prices.  We all give and take via the Geekhack community by offering our advice, experience, etc. via posts.  So it's only natural that we do likewise when offering items in the Geekhack Marketplace.  When I buy something off of eBay, I view it as strictly a transaction.  Once the deal is done and the keyboard is in my hands and as described, the deal is finished and I pretty much forget about the seller.  When I buy something from a fellow Geekhacker, I feel like it's much more than just a transaction.  It's like there's a connection made at the same time.  From that point on, whenever I see them make a post, I always think back to the keyboard(s) they sold me.  Perhaps I'm just weird, but that's how I view it.

I think I am done with my SSK purchases but hopefully I was not responsible for the recent spike in prices :-). I bought 3 SSKs here (from JPC, MissleMike, and Bigpook) and they were all great folks who charged a very fair price. I don't plan to ever sell any of my SSKs.

Note that if it's a rare keyboard, a US only listing, and a buyer that bids on 100s of keyboards that leads me to believe it's a buying service.

A lot of this stuff ends up at KBDMania/OTD.

Not Geekhack.  Geekhackers tend to be cheap threadcrappers (although I have no statistical proof of this).

Well, for the keyboard being discussed in this thread, out of the three bidders on it at the moment, two of them are Geekhackers and both have posted in this thread.  I won't name names, because that's not cool to do, but anyone who's been following their posts and noticing when they make a post about making a particular bid can easily spot who they are.  So not all Geekhackers are cheap.  I agree though the price is beyond most Geekhacker's budgets.  As for the third bidder, I have no idea who it is, and whether it's a Korean buying service or not.  It could be, but the price wouldn't be at $200 if they were the only bidder.

For the two Geekhack members who I'm referring to, don't take my post wrong.  It think you're cool guys and have great tastes in keyboards.  You shouldn't feel guilty at all about bidding on these keyboards because they are scarce and wonderful pieces of IBM engineering.  I'd love to buy a few dozen more myself.  It's just economics at work.  Too many buyers after a product with a very limited supply.

Sorry, it's been a long day.  I edited the post...should have been "too many buyers", not "too few buyers".

MissleMike,

I've been meaning to post this for a while, so this is as good of a time as any.  You seem to be one crazy guy.  I mean that in a good way.  You sell your keyboards to fellow Geekhackers, then turn around and bid the same price as you sold it for on a comparable unit, meaning if you won it, you're losing money after taking into account shipping.  I haven't quite figured you out, but am guessing you're just doing it out of the kindness in your heart for others having difficulty sourcing a particular keyboard.  And bidding $200 on a used SSK which was the going rate for a NIB just six months ago?  I've also seen you bow out of the bidding to let another Geekhacker win the auction, even though they end up not winning it.  Sounds to me like you're just doing it for the enjoyment of it, which is great.  I'm sure others are grateful for your generosity, if they even realize it.

OK, i'll admit I'm the other bidder but I quit when it went past $100 (you never know, maybe all the serious SSK bidders were on vacation that week).

Yep, you and MissleMike were the two I was referring to.  By all means, do put in some minimum bid on these things.  As you say, you never know when you might win something for very cheap unexpectedly.  I know I have.  So anyone figured out who's the third bidder?  Don't post it here though, coz that's not cool.

For once I'm not the third GH bidder. I'm certainly interested in an additional (used) SSK, but not at this price.
