Ducky 1087
« on: Tue, 26 April 2011, 10:37:39 »
I've been looking to pick up another mechanical keyboard (own a Filco browns currently). Ideally, I want to get a Filco tenkeyless with blue switches for my next one, but I came across Ducky 1087 on PChome.

Its price and low shipping cost from PChome look pretty appealing, but I haven't seen much detailed reviews on this keyboard.

Does anyone know how Ducky 1087's compare to Filcos? Is it worth it for me to jump on it for its cost or better for me to wait for Filcos?

Depends on how cheap it is compared to the Filco.

The rule of thumb is if a Chinese Clone is a lot cheaper buy it.  You can always toss it if it doesn't work.

Looking at about $76 + $10 shipping from PChome. Below $86 overall compared to $130-$160 for a Filco shipped.

Because of the detachable cable and lower price, I think you will be better off comparing it to a leopold FC200R.

http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=leopold,tenkeyless&pid=fc200rcab

Then consider what happens if you do need to return it.  Return shipping to taiwan vs. US shipping to EK (assuming you are in the US).  Also, the ducky has an aluminium plate (instead of steel).  It is extremely light if portability is a concern for you.

Also, the 1087 and the Leopold use the cherry stabilizers, and both have integrated 10key pad (activated by num lock).

FWIW, I can't speak for the Leopold directly, but between the 1087 and my filco, the cherry stabilizers make the large keys (return, shift, caps, etc..) feel dull when pressed (thud rather than clack), while the wire stabilizers on my filco make them feel and sound just like all of the other keys.  To me, there is a clear difference but it is not undesirable, just different.

My friend has a Leopold and I've played with it before. I'm not a huge fan of its round edged design.

Thanks for the good info though.

How does cherry stabilizers compare to the wire stabilizers? Is it only the cherry switch under it?

--edit-- nevermind. found an image of it. just plastic underneath.

I have owned both the Leopold and Ducky with blues, and if price was equal, I would pick the Leopold hands down.  The build quality is definitely better and it's a little heavier.

That said, I just ordered a 1087/browns from PCHome for 85$ shipped to my door- 40 dollars less than the Leopold.  For the money, it's a good keyboard.

I'm in the same boat as you. Very tempted to order the blues for ~$85 right now.

You get what you pay for. Ducky 1000 series is an entry level product line. The enclosure build quality is acceptable but by no means on par with Filco or even ducky's 9000 series. If yo don't mind the cheapened construction design (oh and the ugly duck label), it is still an decent choice for the price, considering that other than the enclosure, the quality of the inner constructions are still pretty good.

That being said, Ducky is developing 9000 series tenkeyless. I am quite interested to see what they have to offer.

Is there an ETA on the 9000 series tenkeyless?

Not yet. But it was confirmed on their official facebook page that they are developing one.

When you say the build quality is a bit better on say Leopold, what exactly does that entail?

It doesn't have as much flex, all gaps are uniform, and it doesn't wobble.  Basically it just "feels" more solid.  Check out the initial review of the 1087 in the reviews section and you will see more detail, with pictures.

If it was for my daily keyboard for my desk, I'd definitely spend the extra 40 bucks.  But if it's going in my laptop bag and only getting occasional use, then the cheap one works just fine.

The real question, Ripster, is do you think a 1087 is still overpriced at 85$ shipped?

At this price point, a PLU may be another option.  You still get the 10key layer, and the case is one piece.

How do these compare to DAS? $85 vs. $100 (w/ educational discount) isn't a huge difference, I may jump on the DAS even though I want a tenkeyless.

The Das is a better keyboard.  It's made by costar, just like the filco.

My advice to you would be to spend the money and get a filco tenkeyless.  You will use the board for a long, long time- might as well go with the one you really want :)  It's a shame you don't like the rounded corners of the Leopold.

Got my 1087 with browns today from PCHome.  Ordered friday night, arrived at my door in chicago wednesday morning- amazing.

Anyway, the gaps on this one are all uniform and there is absolutely no wobble what so ever.  Yay.

Moogle's been not very active, even in the Malaysian forums. He just drops by ocassionally to say Hi.
I think he's pretty much done, based on what he said on another place and I quote

Quote
I don't want to buy another mech keyboard since this is a one time investment tongue.gif

So i'm pretty much future proof.

It's good that he found something he loved while people here are getting poisoned daily to get that next keyboard that they absolutely must have. Yours truly included.

I think it means the German Kingdom or something or whatever you said. Should be the same meaning, not that I know any much German. The only German words I know are these.
Though, I can't recall how I came up with it. Maybe too much reading on World War I, and a nice ring to it so it stuck and I just use it everywhere.
