Happy Hacking Lite 2 noise or Apple Bluetooth keyboard
« on: Sat, 30 April 2011, 21:56:15 »
Hey everyone, hope your doing well

I was wondering if I could get some input regarding the Happy Hacking Lite 2 keyboard or the apple Bluetooth keyboard. I will be a college student living in a dorm next year and I wanted to know if the Happy Hacking lite 2 will be noisy for a dorm setting, with 2 other room mates. Thanks!

PS I use Vim extensively

I am currently typing on  the Apple BT keyboard and it's not completely silent. The keys have a bit of wiggle room and will vibrate around when struck and when the rubber caps push them back up again after the stroke.

The lite isn't a Topre. The noise will be roughly the same on both keyboards, I would think.

You might want to look into a Sun Type 6 USB keyboard. Can be had for about half the HHKB lite, and is the layout the HHKB is based on. Plus, you can get extra keys on the left side to use for whatever you want, if you xmodmap them. There are some hacks necessary to make them recognizable, though.

Anyway, I find both the Sun and the HHKB lite to feel basically the same, with a slight edge to the Sun. But it is full size (and then some).
HHKB Pro 2 -- Custom UNIX layout Unicomp Customizer 101 -- IBM Model M 1391401 (modded to UNIX layout) -- IBM 1397000 (also UNIX layout) -- SSK in UNIX layout -- Model F 122 key in UNIX layout (Soarer USB "native")

CST L-TracX trackball -- Kensington Expert Mouse trackball

From experience, the HHKB Lite 2 is far louder, the HHKB L2 are crisper than normal off the street rubber domes.

I don't know what's 'too loud' for a dorm setting though, but i'd get annoyed if someone was typing on it while I was trying to sleep.

From experience, I disagree; the HHKB Lite2 is just another rubber dome as far as loudness and feel. It's neither significantly louder nor signficantly crisper than the other rubber dome boards that happen to be within arms' reach (Keytronic, Logitech).

Lenin has adorned my lapel every May Day since my bud brought him back from the USSR, sometime in the late 70s.

Image repeated for clarity, after May 1.

Yesterday there were celebrations and fireworks here. May 1st never dies, it seems.
