Softening Cherry MX Black switches
« on: Sat, 07 May 2011, 14:21:35 »
Hello,

I have been thinking about this for a while and I came up with this idea just recently;
You put someone or something heavy on top of the keyboard, with the keys down, so all the keys are pressed down for a couple of hours or overnight.

Will this hurt my keyboard? Will there be any difference?

Thanks!

Put your girlfriend on it. I'm sure she will apperciate it, or run over the keyboard with a heavy truck.

Of course standing on it might work as well.

Pretty pointless thing to do. It's just compressing the springs and keeping them in a compressed state they aren't gonna wear much with that kind of use.

The mx black's don't break in like other switches. While they do feel a bit lighter after about a week of use, similar to other switches I'd say it's mostly in the housing. The spring itself can take months if not years to fully break in, a few have even mentioned old cherry mx black keyboards being nearly as stiff as new ones. It's why some like the mx black when they've been heavily used due to the amount of wear.

Reason why the mx reds became so popular linear with the level of resistance comparable to the mx browns.
