Fun Model M Mods?
« on: Tue, 10 May 2011, 00:33:26 »
So, I'll be setting my Model M aside again when my new keyboard comes in, but I don't want it to gather dust, so I was thinking of doing something fun and exciting with it.

Has anybody done anything neat or cool with one of these? I mean, they've only been around for about 25 years, I'm sure people have had some time to experiment.

Even simple things, like keycap swaps or paint (dye?) jobs. Are there readily available keycaps that fit the Model M keys?

The most ballsy thing I've done so far with mine is this:

I found an old terminal Model M in the server room at work and grabbed it. Can't use it with my PC (without doing a controller swap), but it does provide me with an extra fun keycap set, so I, get this, swapped my Up arrow key with the Jump key from the terminal keyboard. Yeah, that's right. Beat that.

Plenty of dye jobs. Search Rit dye on here.

If you hit the group buy section, acfrazier is currently running a Model M key group buy with coloured keycaps, blank black keys, APL logos etc.

There's also the full steampunk typewriter mod if you've got lots of time :)
