My thoughts on Brown and Red comparison
« on: Tue, 10 May 2011, 17:25:49 »
I just received my Brown.
Filco Majestouch 2 Brown.
Red is Filco Majestouch 2 Red.

Just as I feared, it is quite similar to Red.
I now understand what ppl were saying when Brown feels linear when typing fast.
Here's simple comparison between Red and Brown in words.

For Brown users, if I compare Brown and Red,
Red has very similar audio feedback except no that little tactile sound when typing. So it is linear meaning, Red doesn't have any sound except bottoming out. If you want to hear the typical linear sound, you gotta put your Ear close to the keyboard.
Therefore, you are most likely to bottom out on Red.
For the feel of it Red feels very similar but no middle point. So just as you are imagining, it feels like.. nothing. Meaning like cloud... Yea.

For Red users, brown feels very similar and you will be a little disappointed if you expected something different like me. But as I have been playing SC2 and typing, I do feel some difference.
First, the force is heavier. Since there's the middle point, you gotta use a little more force when typing.
For the feel, it is hard to explain in words, but imagine there's this little bump that's like scratching while you are typing. So you can feel that scratch. It feels a little dirty if you are used to Red.
Like if you are used to linear, Brown's tactileness feel like there's something that's between the keycaps that's not suppose to be there.
But what's different is, since there's this little bump you feel when you type, your fingers do know whether you typed or not. This is good for gamers if you want to know whether you typed or not.
Also for typers.
For the audio feedback, it is very similar. If you type gently on the keyboard, you will almost hear nothing. But when Red really doesn't give make any sound if you cloud type, this does make a little sound. And if I must compare, it sounds like.. a good membrane keyboard, which is good.
In the sound wise, Red and Brown doesn't differ much. Brown has a little extra tactile sound it makes. So when Red sounds like something rubbing on a soft rock, Brown sounds more like pebbles hitting on to each other softly..

When it comes to which is lighter, they are really similar.
Blue is defintely heavier than these two.
But I would say because Red doesn't have that bump, Red feels lighter to me.
Especially when I game, Red hurt my fingers less. So I must say Red has lighter force.

Overall, Brown and Red are a little different but not much.
In the audio, Brown makes a little more sound.
In the tactile, Brown has that little bump which is also different from Blue tactile.
In the typing feel, Red feels very light, and Brown gives this little bump with a little more force.

The only major difference is Brown has bump, Red doesn't.
That's really about it.

So which is better? hmmm... they are different so it's really not comparable.
But I would say, Red and Brown are both very good for gaming.
I now know why so many progamers use Brown.
To me, I like Red more for SC2 which require lots of tapping.
But Brown is also very good.
Brown feels better in typing cause of the bump.
Red is really cloud typing, there's really nothing.. when you type.
But I do feel very small like a scratch or like rubbing on to something when you type on Red.
It is defintely not noticeable compare to Brown.

I think... maybe I will keep both.
Red and Brown are very nice keyboards.
Moreover, I think I can feel the difference between 1 and 2.
It's really hard to put in words, but 2 does feel more firm and deeper and more stable when typing.
They do feel different, at least to me.
I like 2 a little better. Maybe.. I will try Majestouch 2 blue even if I own Majestouch 1 blue.

Thank you for reading.

P.S. I heard non mechanical keyboard users complain on Brown that it is loud...
I.. don't understand what's loud about it.. like.. really..
it's really not noisy at all. Brown just whispers.. when Blue just makes high pitched click click.

EDIT: I just noticed that Red sound louder when bottoming out.
If I just tap on the keys, Red sounds louder than Brown.
Sounds more charming than Brown.
Brown is more like dark mood small kid whispering.
When Red is light, charming and cool personality kid.
Yea like cloud of boobs.

Oh I see reds are like typing on boobs and browns are like typing on boobs with a cancerous lump in them. Got it. lol

In all seriousness, I was very interested in reading your comparison. To hear that they're quite similar is good because now I can just stick to browns and collect mechanical keyboards with browns.

The way you format your posts look like you're writing an epic poem lol.

Thanks for the first hand impressions of red and brown. As someone who doesn't have either yet, it's informative to hear someone describe and compare them. Sounds like they're more similar than not in feeling and it's really if you want a small tactile bump or not. I was debating buying high quality keyboards of each type but maybe now I'll try see if I can get one really good keyboard of one type and find a low priced alternative for the other just to have/experiment with.

When you're typing fast on lumpy boobs (browns) you don't feel the lumps/bumps. So it's like typing on cloud of boobs (reds). I think red switch is keyboard companies conspiring to make more money. Now everybody's got to try a keyboard with reds.

Ripster, who refuses to divulge the inspiration for his avatar, rates the reds higher. What more proof do you need man!

In all seriousness, it gave me a bit of confidence to do the reds over the browns I had sold, due to a broken key. I plan on some blues next, and those two are different enough, but I don't think red and brown are worth owning together unless ur collecting them all like pokemon or something, for my money anyway, as they are the same type of overall feel to my memory of the browns, if not in a A to B comparison.

It is well known that red is brown without the bump (tactility), using the same spring.

And guess that sums everything up in one line.

He does?  A quick reverse-image search of the internet got me the answer in about 2 minutes: it is Ruby Kaye aka Geek-Girl, a comic book character created by Sam Johnson in 2008.  Website is here, interview with Sam Johnson here.

Sorry to bring back the boob commentaries, but I thought as two separate parts of nice things for different tastes.

I guess reds are like the soft part of the boob so...

image a boob without the nipple...

now image a boob with a nice tender nipple... I guess that's what brown feels like.

Proceed to complete the comparison with other cherry mx switches.

Btw brkim, when you mention "1 and 2" you mean majestouch 1 and majestouch 2, or 1 as red/brown and 2 as brown/red?

^__^ can't wait to get my own mechanical keyboard!

@ the OP give the browns a little more time to break in. That slight scratchy feel that new browns have goes a lot smoother after a month of typing. If I compare the broken in keys on my brown with some basically unused keys on it the broken in keys feel smoother and far nicer to me.

Thanks for your comparison though.

I currently prefer browns over reds. I find them pretty much the same while gaming (FPS) but I prefer the feel of browns while typing.

I was lucky enough to get to try a red filco without buying one. Which made it easier to form an opinion as its easy to get caught up when you drop £156 (price of the red in the UK) on a keyboard

So I just got my reds in, typing for 60 minutes and the result is they are just like browns for me, but ever so slightly different. Perhaps that's the way I type. I feel that the browns work wonders if your patient enough to type in a way that allows you to feel that bump, but with the faster harder way my bear claws type, the reds feel better, almost if that mini tactile bump just got in the way. Like it was harder to control the keypress when you had to over come that bump. If I force myself to slow down, the browns do seem to work better, in my memory at least, I never had them side by side. but notheless the reds feel smoother faster for me, ever so slightly. I think if you bottom out as much as I do, you are missing the point of the browns. But if you can somehow not bottom out the browns do feel tactile. In my case the reds help me more with not bottoming out as I am no longer trying to feel or overcome that bump, so I can just focus on the reds pure depth of press. Before it was overcome the bump, keep up the speed, but not so much that I miss the bump and bottom out. Reds=Simple: Just don't press down too far and keep up your speed. But of course I have no long term typing on either to really be like an expert, but this is the quick and dirty review for the everyman.

For my money, I am sticking to the reds for gaming and night typing, and the blues for when I want some serious clicky action like my old Matlias Tactile Pro ALPs board. It's hard to justify owning both the reds and the browns. I noticed a slight spring reverb sound, but its not bothersome, just different on the reds, or perhaps its the filco 1 vs 2 thing. The more important issue by far is the Filco 2 LEDs, at least on the reds, are not retina blinding anymore. That alone makes it the superior board by far over my old browns, which only illustrates just how small the difference is between the two.

So I think I will buy the blues, which should offer a real differnce to justify owning both, and leave the browns behind for now. Typing with my red filco right now on my iPad 2, via the Apple USB adapter in the Camera Kit. Filco on my iPad 2 yo! Makes a good little "Laptop", if I didn't have to hold up the screen. It would be fun to build a Flico Laptop case out of these two items, the best keyboard on a laptop ever!

That's exactly how I feel about blues. The bumps just keep getting in the way of typing. It's not like buckling springs where I can just pound it. Blues are kind of like browns but with bigger bumps. I still can't get used to typing on blues after more than a year. But I do like the clicky sounds.

They are up to version 3 I think, I believe I had version one,

http://www.matias.ca/tactilepro3/

But it was not a nice keyboard to own, switches were awesome, more clicky than what I imagine the blues are like, possible between blues and buckling spring, but it had hands down the worst casing ever that cracked and creaked. These are alps switches, at least the first version was, they bought the last ones like the ones they used up when the company went under that produced them. Meaning there are more than one alps switch too.

Too bad that Matias keyboard is fugly.
Oh wait, it's originally for Apple, that explains...

Regarding red vs brown, I do bottom out and still I prefer the "feel" of the brown.
And when I say I bottom out, I mean I don't give a rat's ass about that tactile bump when I type.
But I like it more than linear... go figure.

I actually was going to refund my Brown to Amazon. So I put it back to original packaging for about 2,3 days. Then I realized how Brown just feels better in typing compared to Red. I love Red for gaming but just doesn't feel right when typing :(.. There's really no feedback when you typed or not for Red. Brown obviously has tactile feedback. So now I'm typing with Brown...
I am also thinking about buying another new blue for me.

I'm assuming that someone, like me that doesn't type lightly, will not be able to tell any real difference between the red and brown?  I will always bottom out and except for maybe a difference in feel to some degree, I can't imagine any real difference that would justify the higher price of the reds over brown.  I do really like my browns by the way and am curious about reds and would buy one if it were the same price as browns but really...  Anyone else?

I am typing with Browns now, and Browns feel better when it comes to typing. To me at least.
Reds is more like cloud typing so it does feel lighter. There's no bump so it is better for tapping faster like for gaming.
They do feel different in some ways so if you can afford it, it is nice to keep one tactile and one linear.

damm you brkim and the cloud of boobs, you made me change my mind about getting brown saying brown feel like something is dirty inside with the tactile feedback and I loved your description on reds so I ended up, giving up my need of 105 key layout, and I just ordered the Majestouch2 Limited Edition with Red switches, full layout ♥_♥ can't wait for them to arrive!!! ZOMG so much exitement! finally!

XD I should work for Filco advertising their keyboard haha
Red is definitely good for SC2. There's no doubt :) Red really is good for gaming, but for typing, it's alright...
Of course it's better than rubber dome, but I guess I just prefer something tactile when typing words.
But other than that, Red is great choice.
Definitely recommend for gamers XD
P.S. This is my opinion so some ppl say Red is best for everything.
