Got Logitech MX550! and Impressed
« on: Tue, 17 May 2011, 19:41:43 »
I currently own 3 mechanical keyboards.
Filco Majestouch 2 Brown
Filco Majestouch 2 Red
Filco Tenkeyless Majestouch Blue Blank version

They are all fine keyboards, no actually best keyboards!
I went to Best Buy with my friends today and was trying out
membrane keyboards while they shopped.
Nothing impressed me and was thinking "wow how could they sell these... things... "

Until I tried Logitech MX550.
I always underestimated and thought wave designed keyboards would be hard to adjust
and feel weird, but my thoughts went away when I tried out.

It was one of the best comfortable keyboards I ever used..
Actually the most comfortable keyboard I've used.

Usually, most of the keyboards have the same rectangular design.
So people, like me, usually look for the best keystroke feelings.
So that's why we are here. Mechanical keyboard FTW.
But as I type alot and do computing a lot, my hands do get tired and gotta rest.
I do have separate palm rest for my Filco Brown but I could see my hands keep tilting to inside
as I type along.

For Logitech MK550,
The palm rest was very comfortable and in right position.
It is made of rubber and comfy.
They keystroke feeling was quite great and deeper than most nowadays membrane keyboards.
The wave design was the most impressive part.

When I try out keyboards I just type sentences that come up in my head.
For Original design, rectangular, when you type quite a lot you will know your hands position
kinda tilt to the inside. It's just because of the rectangular design.
So at first, I thought wave design was just gonna make your hands a little comfortable.
But this was different! XD

When I type numbers and F keys I normally move my hands.
I also make some errors when typing.
But this one, I never did.
So I thought "huh? really.. "
Then I kept typing than I realized how comfortable the keyboard was.
QWER are lower, RTY are getting little higher, UIOP are getting lowered again.
I really thought this was not gonna make lots of difference,
but as I am typing with this keyboard right now, wow... this is comfortable :)

So I bought the keyboard at Bestbuy XD
It did come with extra mouse and it was quite comfortable too.
I especially like the loud "click" part.. lol
So right now... my Filco brown is... at the other side of the room :(
But I am sure I will be rotating each keyboard's turn.

Only Con!
Because of the wave design, it is NOT good for gaming.
and membrane keys.. but these are one of the best membrane keyboard I've tried.
I will just use my Brown and Red for gaming :)
(Can't wait for Diablo 3!!)

It would be best if this keyboard had Cherry switches like Brown or Blue.
All the media keys are here too. Which I use them ALOT.
I especially like the "CD out" function key lol. It's just cool.. that's all lol

Overall, this keyboard is the most comfortable membrane keyboard that I have ever used.
If you get a chance, try it out! :)

P.S. This is a keyboard forum so I thought it would be okay.. to complement on
membrane keyboards too ! XD

And..
Logitech... they never disappointed me :)

Thank you for reading!

There are plenty of good membrane keyboards out there. There are just so many more horribly bad ones.
Notable Switches I have tried:
black cherry, blue cherry, brown cherry, clear cherry, cherry M84, white alps, black alps, cream alps, Monterey blue alps, Fujitsu Peerless, Gateway2000 rubber dome, Keytronic rubber dome, Model M buckling spring, Model F buckling spring, futaba, black space invader

In my experience, Logitech is the worst of the worst. I've never used a Logitech board that I liked.

Yup True :)
Before this, my best keystroke membrane keyboard was Logitech White Media keyboard. They are not produced anymore, and I cannot really recall the precise name for it.
But that one had a really good keystroke feel. I used it for about 4 years until the keys started to fade, and the keyboard started to look... horrible :(
Mk550 impressed me by showing, "good design of the keyboard can make a lot of difference".

I'm currently using the Logitech Wave, have been using it for over a year.  I have the older generation, the wired version.  I'm not even sure if they still make the wired version anymore, but I love it.  I was thinking about buying a new Wave since there was a decent sale going on but I missed it due to indecision.  I have a mechanical keyboard w/brown switches on it's way so the transition will be interesting.

Awww~ :(
I've actually bought only 2 logitech keyboards. The one I said, and this one.
Actually one more, but that one was okay :)
I do agree with you on some parts. I don't like the typing feeling of the illuminated keyboard and those things. I didn't really like the G110 either.

The only downside is that the Wave is quite large, reason I'm going tenkeyless with the mechanical :)

Oh yea! I forgot to put that! XD
Yup, true. It is quite large cause the keys are larger too!
But so far, because it is so comfortable, I am keep typing and typing! wow..
This keyboard really showed me that design can change everything.. at least to me :)
very satisfied.

I use a Logitech wireless illuminated keyboard for my HTPC. It has scissor switches, I think Logitech calls them "perfect type" or something, but it's actually really nice to type on. In fact, typing for short periods of time it seems like I can type quite a bit faster than on my mechanical keyboards.

Yup, it all comes down to preference :)
I was actually going to purchase illuminated keyboard (wireless or wired), but my fingers didn't really like scissor typed :(
But I know it is a very nice keyboard too indeed!

Stick some Nickels on a key - I don't have perfectstroke keyboards in the RipOmeter database.
haha XD
Mk550 is not perfect stroke. It is just rubber dome membrane but with deeper keys which gives more comfort when bottoming out.
I am just wishing now that this keyboard has Cherry brown switches :(!!

I did it twice. Each time it required twelve nickels to actuate the key. Hope that helps.
